Well, likely an attempt to get out of the contract, or get traded. Smart on his agent to bring him him over for an attempt.

I think it's less about saving face than getting a first hand look and being able to evaluate his progress. Looking at KHL video is not the same as seeing and working with him first hand.

Bjarnason's clock starts next season when he goes to the AHL, Zavragin probably comes over in 2027-28 (3 year KHL deal). Ersson and Fedotov are in the NHL.

If you play out Kolosov's deal in Minsk, you won't be able to have him work with your goalie coaches (a strength of the organization) and have to make a decision in 2026-27 when he's a RFA with less information than you'd like.

We lost Stolarz b/c a knee injury meant he wasn't ready for NHL when they had to make a decision.

It's not just about Kolosov, it's also about the decision to extend Ersson and/or Fedotov.

It is definitely not about that, because when they had the chance to do that last season they refused and chose to gaze into the abyss of Cal Petersen repeatedly. It's about saving face. That's all this team is about at this point. It's why their POHO's job is doing exactly that instead of, you know...hockey operations.

And as was pointed out at the time, the Flyers got paid a pittance to take that contract on.
The price of cap room has declined substantially since the cap started going up again.
Made worse by teams becoming frugal under a flat cap suddenly finding themselves with cap room again.

Friedman:

-heard Kolosov may think there is a clearer path to the NHL than was shown to him last season

-he has a signed contract here and while there’s no official agreement with the KHL, there is an understanding to honor each others contracts

-expected to play preseason games

-believes there will be an option open to him to return home if he’s not in the NHL by a certain time this season (which I take to mean he’s in the league, not going back and forth)

I'm probably grasping at straws here, but my guess is...

Flyers have promised him NHL time this year, maybe not to start, but they are banking on either an injury, or one of Fedotov or Ersson struggling.

Just a hunch.

I think he wants the option to go back, but probably realized that no KHL team thinks he's good enough to create a furor like with Fedotov last season. And you don't want to spend January in some of these places:

scroll down to see where teams are in the Eastern division.
Probably easier to fly to Minsk from Philadelphia than to get home from Novosibrisk.

In Russia, winter gets worse not only from South to North, but also West to East.

We've seen numerous examples of performance and talent meaning nothing to this organization

Name all the "performance and talent" that went elsewhere and performed.

Interesting. What does this even mean? Do they get any kind of compensation in this situation if he bails?
They can't terminate the contract without the Flyers agreeing to do so.
And why would the Flyers give up an asset?

Kolosov's only real option is to play here and prove that he's worthy of a NHL job, whether here or as trade bait.

They see that Fedotov is trash and Ersson is legit. If Kolosov is good then he should for sure be the #2 to Ersson. Fedotov to the AHL if possible or cut him. Fedotov is not a NHL goalie.

If they thought Fedotov was trash why did they sign him?
Fedotov was a top KHL goalie before he was exiled to the Arctic circle.

The point is they don’t know, goalies are unpredictable. If he stinks, they can absolutely give Kolosov a shot - which is why it was objectively dumb for him to try and not show up.
He’ll get NHL games this year for sure - but waiting just created additional competition for himself.
