Apparently Rene Fasel is just as insane as Bettman

Looking forward to the ECHL All Stars and the Combined World Women's Team being proposed next.

Which is is OK as this is not a serious tournament.

It sure isn't any more.

Hopefully the star players boycott this POS event, or turn it into a shinny tournament, in an empty ACC. The NHL deserves nothing less for what they're doing to the international game.

Heh, well I thought I read that the WHC had to go to Minsk because no other European country would host it, because of the crippling cost. Yeah, the WHC in Sweden was a disaster, total misread of the prices and market. :p:

No it was decided years ago. The problem is always in rotating the hosts. They don't want the same countries hosting it short periods of time. That presents some issues occasionally as some countries aren't prepared to host it when they could.

when you think World Cup you think more than 6 countries are participating. (I refuse to even acknowledge the two sham all-star teams)

This tournament is worthless

It's wort a lot. The 96' and 04' were fun to watch. That why it will happen again.

I dont know why but it had always this "not so important" feeling for me when dealing with World Cup. I mean, yes it has some prestige but I think Olympics and WHC have more competetivnes during the games and nations really want to win there and care for results in very serious fashion. Even if there are not top squads at WHCs...While at World Cup I have feeling - lets play some hockey and have fun...and yes, win the whole thing wouldnt be so bad;)

I don't have any issues with the WHC except for the dependency of hoping the teams that don't make the NHL playoffs have some good US players. So there is at least a chance the U.S. can medal. Because of the playoffs being, already in full swing, the WHC will never be as competitive as the Olympics nor the World Cup.

The leagues over seas will never adjust there schedules nor will the NHL. The WHC will never be as competitive with the NHL playoffs going on. Doesn't mean I won't watch, the WHC is still a great tournament.

It doesn't matter what the name is, and six teams wouldn't be terrible given how many nations play hockey at a high level (though eight would be better). The issue is the insanity if putting two non national teams into what is apparently supposed to be an international tournament. International, as it between nations, not between nations and one bloc of nations and one group of North American youngins.

Bettman just wants to expose as many top NHL players as possible. It's much more beneficial from NHL point of view that way. One main problem is the name of the tournament. If Bettman wants to have an NHL all-stars with national teams consisting of NHL players, the tournament name should be like "NHL World Cup", "NHL World All-Stars" or something, so that everyone knows that the tournament is just one kind of all-stars event for NHL players.

Now NHL tries to reuse the tournament name to arrange something that is not a real international tournament, but fans want something that can be taken seriously enough by players and fans. This new World Cup format is not a problem for me.

If I watch EHT I can watch new World Cup too. EHT doesn't prove much about countries, but neither does Olympics. Many fans just want to use tournaments for chest pounding and proving which country is best. Tournaments determine the best team, not the best country. Teams just represent their countries. There's a clear difference.

If the tournament format with mixed teams will come true, I just hope that the tournament is restricted for players playing in NHL/AHL. That way it's easier for fans to understand what the tournament is really about: an international tournament for NHLers.

EHT is used to test players for World Championships, no medals or actual titles are handed out. Why even bring it into the discussion? :shakehead

EHT is also a tournament and one of those four participating teams win the tournament. Meaning of the tournament, prizes, titles etc. don't change that fact at all. I can watch EHT and mixed team World Cup tournaments as long as they are entertaining regardless of what's the status, meaning and purpose of those.

World Cup has been an irregular tournament organized by NHL where no medals are given, the title doesn't have prestige and is there even any trophy that is given to the winning team? In that sense I understand how Bettman & co steer the event towards all-stars like event.

Yeah, I don't like it either, but I understand that it's business, and I can watch the tournament if players play seriously (unlike in all-stars game).

I'd suggest "NHL Fun on the Ice Festival". More fitting.

Hah, Lemiux is like "Am I supposed to be happy to hold this trophy?"

I don't see how any European would say yes to teamEuro Allstars
There might be reasons:
1) Money. I've understood that NHL will share the profit between the owners and players. If the money is given only to players who participate, then it's one reason to participate

2) "Pressure". I don't know if many players want really to play in all-stars game instead of using that break to rest. Still most players (without good excuses) play there. I guess that players are expected to go to all-stars event if they're selected. NHL is their employer and all-stars game wouldn't be anything without star players. My guess is that, as World Cup is showcase tournament of the league, NHL expects players to play there. Are they forced? No.

Above mentioned reasons wouldn't make the tournament better. It's not good if players participate because of money or because they're expected to. This is just pure speculation, but NHL is business and it has some kind of control over its employees regarding events arranged by the league.

It is like NHL do not want anyone to take this seriously, they arrange a tournament and then make everything they can to make it into a joke? Sad that hockey have to settle with this while other sports have more proper international tournaments.

Do not NHL earn enough so they have room for a soul?

Soul? Oh nono, that is not a good businessmodel....... Except it is, atleast in the long run.

Germany has weakened in recent years but Leon Draisaitl will be great when he develops. Ehroff, Goc, Greiss, Holzer, Seidenberg. Grubauer in AHL, and Alexander Sulzer in DEL.

I personally don't think they have weakened but it's hard to prove given the results. It's just that Germany never had a chance to even be near to ice their best players in the last 15 years or so.

Just to add to your list, there is also Zepp, Rieder, Wolf, some AHLers with potential (Abeltshauser, Kühnhackl) and plenty of former NHLers (Schubert, Hecht, etc.).

If coached the right way that team would not get blown out in my opinion. But of course Switzerland and Slovakia deserve to be there much more.

I'm willing to bet a large sum that Seidenberg will opt out of any Leftovers team by the way.

If you want to watch the best players or teams, watch the NHL games.
If you want to watch the best national teams, watch the Olympics.

WJC and WC are just between them. At least WJC has tradition. WC is just a big fail at all.

Of course, most of the best players are there. And there will be great hockey played. But you watch an international tournament to see your nation playing. They say they want to spread the NHL across the world, but how? The rest of the world don't give a ****, if their nation is not participating, or had the possibility to qualify.

Its nearly the same with soccer: You don't watch the World Cup, because you want to see the best players or the best teams, you watch it because you want so see your nation playing. If I want to see the best teams, you have to watch Premier League or Bundesliga or what else.
