Anything Goes 42

However many hundreds of dollars they charge these days for the newspaper, it's still too much.

You can find better, higher quality, reporting for less (potentially for free) on the internet.

I do miss the days of being a kid, grabbing the sales paper before Black Friday and looking at the endless sale flyers. But that's the only thing I miss from newspapers.

I don’t even know how it started to get called AI. It isn’t AI at all. Maybe AI will happen someday but this isn’t it.
It’s not Artificial General Intelligence but the processes involved are still very impressive. It’s just being used for mundane, stupid things.

That writer should be fired. There are so many people that would kill for a journalism career opportunity and this lazy f*** is ChatGPTing his way through a fluff piece article.

This’ll be a real problem going forward and I’m sure this lazy mindset will win out unfortunately.

If I needed them, I'd be stealing newspapers from my neighbors at these prices.

I was on here earlier, my wife saw over my shoulder and said “are you letting them know too?” … (I wasn’t) but reality is I’ve known in an internet way some of you since the late 1990’s so here it goes.
Back story; at 13 I was stabbed in the stomach (just above) a piece of tube lines the bottom of my esophagus and a band holds it all in place.
At about age 25 I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus which is a “precancer”.
Last Wednesday (8 days ago) I’m 62 now, I had an EGD. I have one every 2 years to check the Barrett’s.
By Wednesday evening I couldn’t swallow. We thought it was simply swelling. Fast forward, trip to Dr. they are convinced the band slipped and order a CT scan to verify.
The CT did its job but also revealed a 1 inch growth in the upper chamber of my right lung. Density, mass, shape pretty much assure it is lung cancer.
Having P.E.T. scan tomorrow which will give more info and also tell if it is anywhere else.

My wife (a retired RN) trying to be positive but factual says if it had to be it is in the best spot. The right side has 3 chambers. The left side only has 2 because your heart is in the way. So by getting it early even if they remove the whole chamber (a possibility) I likely wouldn’t notice unless exerting a lot of energy.

So now just waiting and hoping it’s localized.
Updating, and it’s not good. The PET scan shows spots in my liver and spleen which means it’s in my blood. There is a 10% chance it is a mutation which would be good and means 10-15 year life expectancy. More realistic (doctor estimates) 18 months to 2 years possibly a year or 2 longer depending on effectiveness of treatments.
Chemo starts Wednesday.

I too want to thank all of you assholes here for giving me your mindless drivel to read and removing me from reality for a bit.

Nothing is final yet. Assume the best and prepare for the worst. Very sorry you and your family are dealing with this brother.

It's not quite the same odds or situation, but roughly 3 years ago in this thread (or a previous version of it) I commented on the fact my dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He had a 33% chance at a 5 year survival rate. He's been in complete remission since October of 2022. The side effects of losing his stomach is another very ugly story, but cancer wise, it's had a very decent ending so far (and mathematically, his chances of recurrence this far out are in the single digits).

You never know with these types of things. Maybe you can say that's part of the problem, maybe you'd rather know for certain than go wondering if the treatment will work. My advice is to try to do things that make you happy, as best as you can while dealing with the chemo, and try to rely on any friends/family you have. And also feel free to post here (or in any of our DMs) if for no other reason than just to chat about this shit or about anything you want.

Good luck Space.

Stay positive my man.

No one likes dry vermouth in their martinis anymore and they're completely missing out. They'd rather drink chilled vodka with so much olive juice that it's dirtier than the chicago river.

A gin martini with a vermouth rinse + lemon twist is just a perfect cocktail. Substance from the botanical gin, rounding out the flavor with the vermouth, and freshness from the citrus twist. Something about playoff hockey just gets the blood flowing for making cocktails at home

Back in the hospital with a brain bleed. Really sick of this shit.
Are you on any medication? My grandmother was in a constant state of blood clots then brain hemorrhages (strokes) while her body battled the medication they were giving her.

Really sucks man. Very sorry to hear it. HF Hawks has seen healthier days
