Was at the Water Tower mall two months ago and it was pretty deserted but shopping malls in general are that way compared to a decade ago. So many people are working remotely and you can do all of your shopping online so I don't think it's an indictment of anything that office buildings don't have restaurants in them like they used too because they don't have office workers in them like they used too.
My doctor is at oak brook mall in the office building and that place looks pretty damn busy every time I go.

How exactly is it looking downtown at this point business wise?

Haven't been down there since before pandemic
I live a few minute walk away from that mall, It’s rarely busy. I think most of Michigan Ave is just a billboard for huge brands anyway, being a huge advertisement/status-symbol and not really designed to make that corporation tons of money. Most shopping is done online now so while i'm sure some of the lessened foot traffic on the Mag Mile is from negative perception of the city, I think there's just less incentive to make the trek out there.

I think the reason Oakbrook Mall is routinely busy is because there’s a dozen + places to go eat right there as well. It's a more concentrated area and for people who live in the burbs it's easy to just park your car in the lot and spend 3 hours there shopping and eating.

IMHO the bigger issue in River North/Gold Coast is that there are a lot of vacant shops/buildings/offices/etc...Even in the Viagra Triangle there are a lot of buildings not being used. We should have more restaurants/bars/shops/etc...and people would pack that whole area. If I had to guess, rent is too damn high so businesses wouldn't have good profit margins.

My company offers an ESPP for 15% discount, 10% of paycheck, Jan 1 to July 1, July 1 to Dec 1, lowest closing price of those two days, (Jan-July, July-Dec) two offers. Zero holding period. Seems like a no brainer to do the max no? Free profits.

Assuming it's a perk and not a cash flow issue if you can afford it you'd be foolish not too.

If you do your own taxes, make sure to use Form 8949 to avoid double taxation.

Im familiar with 8949 a bit from years past but curious about the double tax part. What you mean?
With an ESPP, when you sell, your broker isn’t going to have an accurate cost basis on your 1099. The IRS will assume a cost basis of zero and you’ll owe tax on the full sale amount unless you correctly fill out 8949.

They give us our shares through some site that is unrelated to my normal stock broker and it LOOKS like it tracks the tax info correctly to spit out the necessary info but I'm glad you put this on my radar to make sure I don't get hosed.

Doesn’t matter. The IRS will assume a zero basis without the 8949. Just friendly advice…

Scientific articles recently confirmed thecEarth's rotation is slowing...

Immediately climate change bandwagon advocates blamed climate change (you know..."caused " by Co2 emissions...as the culprit. They arguedpolarvice was breaking off and meting into the oceans and this took the heavier poke regions to lose weight and so as more water flowed towards the wider equator, this slows sown rotation of the Earth.

However other scientists who study the Earth"s interior say a change way down there involving a slowdown of the interior spin of magma is causing the slowing rotational not anything on the Earth's surface or atmosphere..

So a classic chocken or egg conundrum.

Ifvthr cause is due to processes deep in the interior of the earth then that affects climate change not thebotger way around.

A slower rotation reduces Earth's wind and ocean current speeds.. and that might be Ffectobg tge collapse of the Gulf Stream ...Akso if the Earth"s rotation declines the day gets longer as there is a longer exposure of tge Earth's surface facing g the Sun ...
But if tge Gulf Stream collapses then it will get 10 to 15 degrees Colder than normal along the Eastern and North Eastern parts of the I.S.and Canada..If the warm Gulf waters no longer go up the Eastern Seaboard Northwards you would expect that eventually this will reverse the North Polar ice formation to increase Gain.

However switch to alk electric to save us from the carbon is not goingvtp bring back the Gulf Stream ...the climate should get COLDER not Warmer as the media "science" was telling us in their campaign to warn us of die consequences.

Certainly dore consequences if the Gulf Stream collapses soon ..but what can we do?
Clearly the aliens have installed processes deep in the interior of our planet to slow Earth rotation and change tge wind patterns and climate.. Bit nothing we on the Earth's surface can do agaivst this kind of terraforming change (ok ...you do not like the alien cause explanation, Maybe the Cretor God finally had enough with the rot on this planet and flipped a switch to scare us into better ethics and human behavior before flipping the switch back)?
OK ,you do not like that explanation either ...well whatever the reason the internal spin of the Earth is slowing down, there willbe consequences..but I cannotcsee anything we can do about it,esoecialky trying to remove some carbon atoms...Maybe if we reduced the human population from 9 billion to a few million, all that weight would come off the surface ..and if course let's kill off all the cows, pigs, sheep;goats ,that will removexa lot more weight on the surface too,not to mention the weight saved by alm the poop no longer accumulating...And then all the reduction in I weight from less cars, trucks, busses, trans, planes(when landed) .
Yup clearly the sokution is to not remove carbon emissions but rather to just remove humans andcalk the sh*t it takes to keep us going on this planet.

So whetg
her you believe it isxan alien plan ,an elites plan,or God's plan,it would seem the ultimate idea is to get rid of a whole lot of us...if we do notkill each other ourselves by wars, drug overdoses, pandemics, greed and exploitatipn, and vacuous mob go with the trend ignorant of tge true facts reactions..
Maybe we can dig a hole to the center of the Earth, drop some nukes in,and kaboom, get that internal spinning rate back up.

In the facevofvall this looming doom, you can just go hide watching and betting on sports, lost in the ups or downs of your favourite team or player ..yup..just let others worry about the future...deal with manyana when it finally comes for you
holy shit i missed this one. this has shades of this one time when i was a kid on my first job an older dude started talking to me at the cigarette pit about how climate change is fake, but mining and resource extraction has left giant holes in the earth’s crust and soon the earth will “level out”.

i need to start archiving fiddy drops. we 50anon now.

Overrated as hell, anyway. They're shutting it down because people refused to pay the absurd prices they were charging.
When you can smoke 3 racks of ribs, yourself, for the cost of like a single slab at one of the "festivals" it's just dumb to even go to it. I regularly get 3 racks of ribs for like $20 on sale at Jewel or Meijer. It takes me around 4.5-5 hours to smoke them. A single full rack, at most restaurants or bbq joints, will cost you like $30+. What would be the point of me going and spending all that money when the stuff I'm going to make myself is better?(or more suited to my own personal tastes) So yeah, I get why it would shut down. Especially with how most guys have started to smoke their own stuff due to the outrageous costs that bbq joints charge for it all.

I had a coworker who went a few years back, and he said the prices were absolutely absurd. $50-60.

It's also funny to see NAPERVILLE of all places, cry about cost of an event like this. Lol.

Perhaps you shouldn't pay your police officers, who do absolutely nothing, $150-200k a year. Then, you might not go bankrupt when you have to pay said police officers overtime to work events like this. It's a joke, really.

As a rule of thumb, I hate going to restaurants where I can make the food as well as they do.

100%.

We generally only like to go out to restaurants for very specific things, like a Brazilian steakhouse, or nice Italian restaurant. Obviously we have some nostalgic places that we like to go to on occasion, but it's for that reason, not really for the food.

Hockey fans really are some of the f***in nicest and coolest people I’ve met. They love talking hockey and they’re generally such pleasant people to be around.

Met a dude from Edmonton the other day at work and we shot the shit for a half hour or so. I’ve had a ton of these interactions.

Hockey is the best sport on planet earth. LOVE IT.

I just want to bark about how I wasted 8+ hours of my life on House of the Dragon and HBO.

How do you f*** this up. Really. Entire season was filler. ENTIRE SEASON.

Straight down to the finale.

I won’t comment so negatively on the focus of diversity which made for revision within the written material without sounding like a douchebag unless you want to hear it but for what feels like a “strong wahmen” archetype or rather if they really wanted to add to the take of “girlboss fighting against the vicious evil men patriarchy” narratives that’s been beaten to f***ing death by show runners over the last few years that hopes for whatever standing army of actual brain rot individuals will continue to eat up and jerk off to their courage in shaking up or dismantling norms from the safety of HBO office making statements in their fictional universe but at the very least they could have written the dialogue super well like GOT s1-4 or idk maybe THE DRAGON SHOW could maybe use SOME GOD DAMN DRAGONS f***ing shit up — if not one another!

And I would’ve loved to see commentary on how power corrupts men and their children or how the elite use standing traditions/mechanisms(economics) to silence and cripple or blind those with competing intentions, or vice versa how moral arguments made by the oppressed might create for a sense of righteousness when history will tell it’s all relative vice and evil when it comes to power and political games

It was an entire season of setup/planning for the actual war to ensue. Sure, a bit of a let-down, but necessary, IMO. Game of Thrones rushed a lot. It's actually kinda nice to see that HotD isn't rushing everything.

Yeah now that I got a pellet grill and smoke my own ribs, I've realized how insane rib prices are. I got a wonderful rack of ribs at Aldi's for like $8 last week. There was enough meat on that thing to last me 3-4 meals.
