Anyone notice Martin Necas's start?

He wanted out. The two year deal was a compromise to see if the relationship could be repaired.

Now he is glad to have signed a 2 year deal. With Cap going up in the next 2 years and his improved play, i think he will rightly ask for much more than he would have gotten for a long term deal. Maybe he could sign an 8 year deal worth 12 mil per if he keeps up playing like this.

He wasn't happy with his usage last year, where he spent most of the year in the bottom 6 and on PP2. That isn't the case this year

PP2 is correct, but I think the bold is better said that he had crappy linemates on the 2nd line. He was on the 2nd line last year for almost all of the season, but his linemates weren't great and it was a weak 2nd line, but the linemates are similar to this year.

Last year, Necas had the most ESTOI/GP of any Canes forward and the most 5v5 TOI of any Canes forward. His top 5v5 linemates last year were: Kotkaniemi, Drury (who replaced Kotkaniemi partway through the season when he struggle), Bunting..and then Teravainen. This year it's KK and Robinson.

The PP2 comment is spot on though.

As a Canes fan that’s a step too far for me! If Necas had half of Pasta’s natural finishing ability he’d have been an all star for years already. Pasta is also much stronger on his skates.

Necas didn’t get a lot of notice because he plays for the Canes. He’s had some good years and he’s been arguably the most dangerous 3v3 guy in the league since last year. He’s more confident with his decisions 5v5 this year, combo’d with guys finishing his plays more.

He’s been clutch his whole career. That’s been the surprising part for a soft player who really can’t take much physical play while he’s dancing. He’s always been one to step up and make big plays late in games. He wants the puck in those situations and has always been that way. I thought during his last big numbers year that he was their mvp most of the season. He just couldn’t keep the consistency up.

True, but it will take more than a handful of great games from Necas to put him on Pasta's level. Pasta has been better than Necas for a long while. Let's see how Necas looks in 20 games.

Pastrnak scored 110+ the past two years and nearly won the Hart. He’s scored 40+ goals in four of the last five seasons including a goal scoring title.

Necas’ career best season was 28-43-71.

He has a LONG way to go before he enters the conversation with Pasta. This hot streak has been awesome but it’s not even opening the door for that comparison

Jarvis plays a game that works anywhere you put him. He's playing 19 min a night in all situations getting PP1 time and PK2 time. 9 points in 11 games while playing a strong 200ft game. He's doing just fine.

Two high level grinders who's sole job is to retrieve the puck and feed Jarvis? There's worse situations to be in.

Martinook - Staal - Jarvis is dominating defensively. Going back to the playoffs last year, they've been on the ice for 1 GA in ~103 minutes of ice time. And that's as the matchup line. A goal suppressed offsets a goal scored.

I don't think he sustains it. I'm hoping for a .ppg season but this start has been outstanding!

Depends on how fragmented the relationship really is. He’ll be young enough that the canes would consider signing him and he’s generally been healthy. The reality is when he’s hot we win more games, this isn’t the first time he’s created points for the team. He’d be really tough to replace.

I always doubt this teams ability/desire to get ufa’s signed and I doubt I’ll be any higher than 50/50 we get him signed until we actually do. The team will need convincing he’s going to be consistent.

Also, being able to ice 3 lines that are capable of putting points on the board is giving fits to opponents.

Necas and Jarvy are both feasting off having linemates that complement their games and getting mismatches because of the depth. If it stops working, maybe we rejigger these lines. Right now, it's working.

At some point, teams are going to shift their best defensive line to match-up Necas...and Aho's line will eat off that.

Absolutely. It's too big of an "if" right now to lament the Canes not inking Necas to an 8 year deal this offseason. He was coming off a year where he scored 42 points and was -9 on a team that scored 279 goals and allowed 216. It would have been wild to dish out an $8Mx8 after that year.

*IF* he keeps up PPG pace, more or less, he'll probably be worth a Pastrnak extension in the ballpark of $11M, give or take. The cap will go up, but he'll also have less history that Pastrnak of being a consistent PPG or more scorer.

I would bet that the Canes extend him before next season. 8yrs 8.5-9m give or take a bit depending on how Necas closes out this season and playoffs. But I don't think he gets traded or gets anywhere near FA.

Also FWIW I don't think there is any bad blood whatsoever between Necas and the team nor do I think there were any "insulting" offers. Necas gave an interview to Czech media this offseason talking about the situation and taking accountability for his slip in play last year and how he needs to earn more opportunity and is continually working with Rod to get on the same page and improve. It's all coming together this year for both sides and I don't think anything in the past has impacted the relationship. Yes there were some trade discussions in the offseason and last year before the trade deadline for EP40 but those never really went anywhere and the team did not want to trade him. They were just entertaining offers -- like all teams do for nearly any of their players with just a few exceptions.

Of course anything can happen and it's still early this season to even say Necas has completely turned a corner with his play, but I'd be surprised if Necas isn't a long term Hurricane.
