If Crosby wants to play hockey while age 41 or 42, if he morphs into a ~60 point guy? Sure, no problem.

But I don't think anyone wants to see Crosby hanging on long enough to be a barely ~20 point player who can't even crack an NHL roster.

really you don’t? i feel like crosby is exactly the kind of obsessed hockey geek that would play until they stop letting him play. just like jagr. or kobe bryant. if he hadn’t tore his achilles i could totally see him out there as a a 45 year old geezer with no knees and no vert, but having the time of his life using his brain to still find ways to contribute, maybe also like latter day grant hill. in that respect kobe and jordan were very different people.

to me the real question is, as long as he was good enough to play, could crosby ever be bad enough to only score 20? i mean, old jagr was still putting up 45+ point seasons in an extremely low scoring environment. he was scoring all the way up to the point when they wouldn’t let him play anymore… and then that maniac still kept playing in europe.

someday, i bet 65 year old crosby is destroying a beer league in halifax.

He’ll be lucky to get 1,800. People are not considering the lack of talent around him. He’s not even going to be a ppg player with Drew O Connor and aging Rust playing next to him.

He's also off to an awful start for himself personally. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in 10-game stretch of Crosby's career...probably recency bias in there, but he has had an extremely high floor his entire career...it's been rough. Which doesn't excuse Beauvillier and Rust, who are both playing the game like they're looking for a contact lens...but Crosby has willed lesser linemates to better results before.

I wouldn't bet on it, but it doesn't seem utterly impossible. He needs 401 more points. That's an average of 80 points per season (plus one point). He's 37 and can still produce at above a PPG clip. He works hard to stay in shape and loves hockey.

If he can score over 90 points this season and next season and then 80 three seasons from now, he'll only need to average about 70 in his last two seasons to reach 2000 career points (assuming he plays that long).

Like with Ovechkin and 895/900 career goals, I think reaching 2000 points would be a meaningful accomplishment, but it wouldn't help his all-time ranking that much. Would that be enough to propel him ahead of Lemieux or Orr? I'm sure many wouldn't think so. Some might.

4 more seasons averaging 100pts? He is 4 years removed from his last 100 pts season. If he played 5 more seasons--he would need to average 80.2 pts per season and playing till he is 42 years old

Sid can hang on as long as he wants. No need to overreact to a handful of games to start this season.

2000 points kinda depends on what he wants to do.
