The most interesting thing I recall about him was Chicago leaving him off the Cup in 2015 despite automatically qualifying (dressed for like 50 regular season games). He lost his job to Darling and gave a quote that he was rooting for Chicago to lose lol.

He didn't automatically qualify - he only has 14 NHL games in 2014-15.

Dumb question but how could Chicago leave him off the Cup if he automatically qualifies? Would that mean they specifically requested he not get his name on the Cup?

It's simply false. He did not meet the minimum games played in the regular season or playoffs. The Blackhawks could have petitioned to add him, but chose not to.

He did get a ring and a day with the cup.

Yeah it's a good question and it appears I'm slightly wrong, I found this old tweet and apparently for a backup goalie the team can request they be added, not a petition (where the team has to request the league add the player but they leave it up to the team)

You don't have to petition for a backup goalie, I'm 99.9% sure, can't find 1 article that says team petitioned for a backup goalie. Vegas had 4 goalies and there's not 1 article about petitioning them on.

I was surprised to find out he finished 2nd in sv% in 2017-18 behind a pretty bad Coyotes team (22nd in GA) The only time he completely had the starter role playing 47 games. Probably should have at least gotten some vezina votes.

then another really good year in 2019-30, finishing 8th in sv%.

Overall, a career .915 sv% over 277 games playing on non playoff teams for the majority of it (24 PO games). Thats pretty solid, Better than I initially thought.

Raanta is a really good guy and when not ravaged by injuries, he was lowkey one of the better goalies in the league. From 2015-2020 his .924 was the best in the NHL among goalies with at least 15 GP. The one time he played more than half a season’s worth of games, he somehow posted a .930 on a bad team.

Unfortunately he dealt with injury after injury and just ran out of chances to prove himself. Life is cruel sometimes.

It would probably been easier to get a contract in Europe if he'd made this decision BEFORE every European roster had already mostly been set. And I don't think there are many teams looking for a goalie 1 week before/into the season.

Seems like he wants to spend as much time in Finland as he can without acquiring tax residency.

Perhaps it is not a playing role in the team? Goalie coach/scout?
