He is going to get PAID this offseason, but he'd be a worthwhile investment. RHD are at a premium in this league and Girardi, Stralman, Klein would be a nice set up for the forseeable future.

That's true and they are all good players the only negative is there is 0 offense from any of them.

I'd sign him for just north of 4 million per season on a 5 year deal. He is still young @ 28-29. Very good skater. More of a smart positional defender who is agile he should last a while.

Maybe 4.2 million for 5 years.

wasn't there someone saying his looking for length over cash because he wants stability for his family? If so, I could see this deal happening. His none existing numbers on offense should keep his salary to realistic levels as well. It'd be very solid for both sides.

stralman has been a stud for us and hes actually played very well in the playoffs every year hes been here. hes just a solid 2 way guy who goes about his game very efficiently.

sign this guy. the d will be weaker without him.

if we dont pay him someone else will. letting him walk would be a huge mistake.

Agreed all around.

Took his game up a notch this season, his agility, speed, and quick thinking have been a great surprise and a needed asset on the backend. I really like how he plays above his size when it comes to the hitting game.

I still say he takes the hometown discount and goes for length, which is fine by me.

He's a proven commodity, and one that raises his game in the playoffs. Give him his well-deserved raise. Do not go bargain hunting in UFA where there is no guarantee the new guy will give a crap about his new teammates or hack it in this city. Seen this disaster over and over again the past 20 years.

I feel the same way about Brass, Zucc, Hagelin, and Boyle. To a lesser extent Pouliot and Moore (great pick-ups this past offseason).

Stralman will definitely be a hot commodity on the market. Scoop him up quick and give him the extension he's earned.

I thought stralman was in his 30's

Only 27 holy crap.

As i've said earlier this season. This guy should be first priority.

It is time for them to finally bring someone up. No way they keep Stralman.

And frankly, if they lose, they weren't good enough as put together so pieces need to be moved.

Hopefully Sather is the first one cast aside...

Let's hope perhaps he has it in him to give us a slight discount considering his career was saved here and he is what he is because of it now.

He's a MUST re-sign imo. HE makes Staal expendable to look for Center help. The guy loves playing here, finally has stability after an adventurous career and steps his game up in the playoffs. Our D would be worse without him. Hes earned a contract. Same can be said for Dom Moore imo.

Thank you Toronto Maple Leafs, perhaps the best team developing Swedish talents into NHL players and then getting rid of them. ;-)

Thinking about guys like Stralman, Alex Steen, Kenny Jonsson, Modin.

Many people in Sweden consider Kenny Jonsson the best defenseman we ever have had, at least top three all time but not good enough for Toronto? ;-)

Alex Steen, come on, one of the best and most intelligent allround players in the league just like his father Thomas used to be, Leafs didn't get the hint about his potential.

Fredrik Modin, (6 ft 3 in 218 lb), a true explosive power forward, in 2001 he was lone Lightning player at the 51st NHL All-Star Game and won the Hardest Shot competition with a blast clocked at 102.1 mph. Alternate captain for Tampa Bay several seasons and winning the cup in 2003–04. Olympic gold medalist.

and I don't have to tell you guys about Stralman and what he brings to the table.

At the same time Maple Leafs destroyed the confidence of some huge Swedish goalie talents like Jonas "the Monster" Gustavsson and Mikael Tellqvist. Among the biggest goalie talents we ever have had, never looked the same after playing for the Leafs. ;-) No goalies in the world seem to really succeed in Toronto any longer though. ;-) It's like "We loose, let's blame the goalie!" over and over again, you have to be extremely tough mentally to play for the Leafs as a goalie, that's for sure.

Toronto also had two of the greatest Swedish players of all time not winning a cup, the legends Borje Salming (BJ) and Mats Sundin.

Perhaps it's even after all and believe it or not, I like the Leafs.

If I was a player classical teams like Leafs and Rangers would be on my top wish list to play for, that's for sure. Two great cities, NY nr 1 of course but the fans in Toronto are out of this world. ;-)

He had a great Olympic tournament in 2006, but top-3 all time? Come on! From the top of my head he doesn't even come close to Lidström, Salming, and Stoltz.

He is popular because he always came over to play in the WHC, but he wasn't much more than a decent top pairing d-man in the NHL - which is great, but not "all-time great". Karlsson, Hedman, OEL, & co. are already better than he ever was.

My thread was a bit OT, I appologize, please let's not make this a Kenny Jonsson thread, I can assure you that many people in Sweden consider Jonsson one of our best defensemen ever but people have different views like always.

I agree with Kenny not having as good NHL careeer as some other top swedish defensemen but he played for the Leafs and Islanders during difficult times (both teams sucked). Kenny Jonsson was extremely good playing for national team and in SEL though, outstanding.

I just realized that Strålman might be the reason our away record has been so good compared to our home record this year. I recently proved that Strålman is great at shutting down top players, at least from a possession standpoint, but AV still primarily goes with the proven duo of 27-5 against top units when he gets last change.

On the road our opponents try to target 18-6 with their top line, not realizing it is actually our best shutdown pairing (not that AV seems to realize this either), which ends up working in our favor.

Food for thought.

Food for thought indeed. Strålman and Staal are very solid and Strålman is probably our most underrated defenseman. While playing in a strictly defensive role nowadays, he's still pretty darn good with the puck. He and McD are our only legit puck movers. If Strålman is not in the squad come october, I'm pretty sure the gap he leaves will show, especially in our transition game. Yes, I claim he's that important. A very solid all round defenseman.

I'm just sad he doesn't try to pinch more, as he's very good at it and his skating gives him a good chance to be able to backcheck anyway.

Pretty sure Stralman will get the length of contract he seeks and yearly salary north of $5 m. I doubt he'll agree to sign here for only $4+ m (obviously all for it if it's a possibility).

I definitely think 4x5 will get it done, maybe even less. Not that it proves anything, but in every single article he says he loves it in NY and would like to stay. He's got four kids. If he's given 5 years I can see him taking under 4 mil, which would be a great deal for both parties.

yup.

4/5 i believe is a solid deal. i would even go slightly higher to be honest. hes still gonna be more affordable than staal. hes been healthy and hes a minutes eating horse. imo, hes been right behind mcd in quality of play in the scf's.

i still think hes vastly under appreciated here. every one talks about hockey iq and this guy has it. he is a perfect match in an av uptempo system where the d jump up and play over the blueline.

he said he wants to stay in ny. there seems to be a fair deal waiting to happen.
