TSN reporting him a C. I trust the staff on this one. Does not block anyone and they must think he will make some difference.

Now ship out Eller and Milano for picks and be done

Bring up Miroshnichenko, Lappy and wait for Leonard.

I’m guessing this is more Milano insurance than anything. Sonny apparently had a set back and isnt skating today. Total guess, but I’d venture they waived Vrana for roster flexibility and then Milano suffers a setback after being on track to rejoin the lineup.

Mind-boggling move. Zero need for another bottom6 low-end depth. Especially after we just waived and lost Vrana.

And for 2nd, for Pens.?!?! Crazy.

Gotta be start of something else, more moves to come so this makes some sense atleast… if its just this, this TDL starts witha huge ball drop.

Prices are stupid high this TDL. They just are. But this is a late 2nd in a meh draft. You have to think this is a depth add with the expectation that someone else may have to be moved elsewhere.

EDIT: Just saw the post about Milano’s setback. So this makes more sense if they were thrown a curve.
Sgarbossa is a better player. This was a trash move no matter how we spin it. We've drafted pretty well lately and the second has produced guys like Cristal and Hutson. Almost ever year we're told it's a weak draft, they're a myth.

Caps must really think the draft is weak coming up as well, more depth, kid can play C in a pinch too? Don't understand still..

"The Capitals had a pair of second-round picks at the upcoming draft, and it’ll be Washington’s pick heading to Pittsburgh.

In 63 games with the Penguins, Beauvillier has scored 13 goals and seven assists for 20 total points. Playing all over the lineup, he should be able to slot in anywhere within the Capitals lineup."

That's blatantly not true. The 2023 draft was seen as an extremely strong draft, for example.

Also, Cristall and Hutson were picked with early 2nds and we still have one of those.

I don't like this move. I think it was pretty pointless. But it's not really going to hurt either.

Can he toss the mittens??
He got beat up by Ryan Dzingel once in his only NHL fight back in 2020. So, not exactly a fighter.

He's 2nd on the Pens in hits though.

My verdict is meh. 27 year old former first rounder who hasn't lived up to expectations and can skate and hit - he's certainly their type. The better rental winger options like Palmieri, Zucker, and Donato look like they're re-signing. Reilly Smith, who's got similar production while being 6 years older and significantly slower, was traded for San Jose's 2025 3rd, which right now would be literally the next pick after the one the Caps just gave up. I'm gonna take this as further confirmation that the league thinks this year's draft is hot garbage for some reason. The Caps paid market rate, the market just sucks right now.

Exactly. The pick isn't a big deal, but the target is underwhelming. I generally like Beauvillier, I just don't see that it's much help. As a future move, sure, if you plan to retain him. But I doubt he was looking at big money in free agency. He's certainly not going to find that 20-goal pace playing with Eller.

Weird move.

We've said this the last few years. The waning hours of TDLs have been uneventful for a long stretch now, so don't get your hopes up. And I don't see how this would be viewed as the start of something -- like we had to do this so we could set up something else. That doesn't track at all. If anything, we could've used that asset to help acquire something better.

In other words, the pick was worth more in a trade than the player. I agree that it's not a stellar first add for a new GM. I'd have respected him more at a post-TDL presser just saying, "Did you guys SEE those prices today?? f*** THAT, amirite?"

watched pens vs flyers month ago or so (don't judge me, i know i'm weirdo) and beau was a one man army, scored only one goal but should have end up with at least 9, he was generating scoring chances on literally every shift. he's inconsistent, that's for damn sure, but i have a feeling he'll score a couple of big goals in our play-off run

I do think it's both the prices, plus loving the mix and culture we have, plus the potential for Miroshnichenko and Leonard to step up, which i suspect is a decent possibility.

We should now try and take advantage of those prices if we can move Milano (dependingon his situation), Eller, and also Bear as well. Time will tell.

The reaction about this minor move is hilarious. It’s a sellers market. Has been for weeks. Like it or not, versatile role players are valuable depth in the playoffs, and teams can ask high prices this year. Is AB the piece that puts them over the top? Probably not. But that guy might cost one of our top-tier prospects, first rounders, and roster players this year based on what we’re seeing. I just don’t see the front office doing that. Plus, they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.

Macro level studies across teams don't reflect this, but if you look at the Caps recent history in the 2nd round they do dramatically better in the first half of the 2nd round than the 2nd, pick 50 or later
