Why on earth would Colorado ever do this?

Rantanen is to MacKinnon, what Draisaitl is to McDavid.
Absolutely elite second player who's really tough, and brings something extra in the playoffs.

Rantanen doesn't get traded unless he asks to be traded. He has double the playoff points as Marner.

I hate to say this but if you're trading away Marner 1 for 1 you're unfortunately getting back a player like Brock Boeser or Bo Horvat.

Yeah, I know Marner is a much better player than both of these guys, but you have to wait till someone demands a trade for Marner to get fair value.

TSN speculating 25% chance both make it to free agency

I’d put it at less than 10%

They have to make up the 8th year in free agency which can be a fools errand.

Have you seen this? Apparently COL has an internal cap with MacK and no one is allowed to go past it.

They could do sign and trade though which isn’t free agency.

Free agency, you have to make up $10 million at least right off the bat because you can’t get that 8th year.

In a vacuum the value is probably reasonably close. Maybe Rantanen carries a bit more value given playoff pedigree and the whole Goals>Assists... But its also a deal that simply isn't gonna happen either. Both guys are going to either re-sign or end up as UFAs. Neither team will trade their guy.

Toronto would do this in a heartbeat.

But Avs say no.

I'm betting there will be no trading and Rants hits UFA. No idea about Marner.

I think Marner is simply above Nylander and below Matthews.

For Rantanen, if the avs hypothetically offered $88 million
He now has to get to $12.6 AAV just to equal Colorado

There's talk Rantanen wants 14m aav, according to TSN. Maybe he'll get suitors from basement teams for that money. Though he has a cup already so he propably wants that final big fat contract.

That 14 million equals 12.25 in Colorado

Is Toronto going to end up not getting anything for Marner?

Sure starting to look like it.

Why is it starting to look like that lol. Neither side has much incentive to negotiate during the season. For Marner it makes sense to wait until the higher cap numbers are more concrete. For the Leafs they’d rather wait until after seeing the playoffs before they make an offer.

At the end of the day he doesn’t want to leave the team. Very few people want to leave Toronto, I think ROR is pretty much the only player they were willing to extend at a fair price and rejected them. Marner is recently married to another local, I seriously doubt they want to move elsewhere to start their life when they’re already around all their friends and family. He wants to go down as an all-time great for his hometown team playing with his buddy Matthews. His agent will haggle hard like last time but he’s not going to like Columbus to chase the bag.

If he’s abysmal in the playoffs I could see the team being hesitant to extend but I think they’ll still do it at the end of the day.

Theyre all apples to oranges situations. Marner vs Rantanen is comparable because they are both first line wingers.

Sure trade Makar for McDavid. Toews for Thompson. Its a completely different conversation given different positions.

Dahlin vs Reilly for example is a thing. I think we would all agree Dahlin is the better player, but Reilly has some playoff experience so put whatever value on that you see fit.

Dahlin vs Heiskanen. Id take Heiskanen today because of his playoff experience.

lol dude look up ages before you start typing.
Taking Hieskanen over Dahlin is a crazy statement imo especially in playoffs. Hieskanen is soft as butter. Dahlin is probably the most physical “star” dman off the top of my head besides Seider

If Marner is a playoff anchor, why sign him at all at any price?
