During the 1st intermission of VGK/COL, Carter proposed Rantanen for Marner. Thoughts? Good value? Who says no?

Contracts:

Mikko Rantanen: 1 year - 9.25 million (UFA)
Mitch Marner: 1 year - 10.9 million (UFA)

It only makes sense if:
Rantanen insists on testing the market and wants 13+.
Marner is willing to sign for a reasonable cap hit like 10M-11M, but Toronto doesn't want him.
Colorado would pay Marner 10M-11M.
Marner would waive to sign in Colorado.

In that scenario, Colorado downgrades by they get term. Toronto upgrades, and the cost to upgrade is a sunk cost since they don't want to keep Marner anyways.

Colorado would say no. MR isn't a player that isn't working out or anything of that sort, he's a huge part of the core, they'd likely want to add to him not swap him. I don't see the Avs not re-signing him either.

Everyone knows the responses in this thread but Marner is a better player.
He plays PK but that's about the only thing he does over Rantanen. Rantanen produces more, scores more, and is more physical.
Won't be shocked when he finally delivers on what he is capable of in the playoffs in another city.
Sure. Maybe some day. As it stands however, Rantanen is top-10 all time in playoff PPG. The three other active players in the same category? McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon. He actually steps up his PPG when the playoffs begin. Marner on the other hand, has drastically shrunk in the playoffs.

This trade makes no sense.

That's why I started my comment the way I did. People will ignore everything but playoffs. When total package is looked at, Marner is the better player. We all know how things have gone in Toronto. Players usually need to leave to get the respect league wide.

This only makes sense if both are not willing to sign extensions. In terms of a "shake up", the Avs need goaltending, not more/similar/potentially less scoring. Mikko is doing just fine and both MacFarland and Mikko have expressed no concern over contract negotiations. It will get done.

Marner is the more complete player. One of the best Pkers in the league, Selke finalist as a winger, plays all situations and key moments often being the best player on his line.

Keep in mind, we are talking about two of the leagues best superstars here. Neither is bad. We're debating the margins here. I feel Marner impacts other areas of the game more, like a Stone type winger who also is able to put up superstar offensive stats despite playing in defense first systems.

If Toronto want Rantanen with Marner in that trade, Toronto need to add.
But since Matthews injured Toronto got 7W - 2L.
To me Toronto can get more in Trading Matthews.
They can add what they need to be better in playoff.

The Ava need rants more then marner. I’ll keep rants Nikki’s goal scoring and playoff production mean more for me.
