Beat the Habs at home & then they can lose the next two on the road for draft position, although I doubt that changes significantly in the next 3 games.

Scoring with a minute left and winning in the shootout was classic Sens.

Team can't win when they need to and can't lose when they need to.

Could be sitting 5th OVR right now but now we'll be lucky to finish with the 7th OVR pick.
This win basically guarantees Montreal picking ahead and we’ll end up ahead of the Yotes most likely. So frustrating… but predictable.

We all saw it coming. It's just what this team does.

Went on late season win streaks in 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2023 and now 2024 that made sure we didn't pick in the top 5 and draft an elite prospect.

Ended up picking Cowen, Zibanejad, Brown and Boucher, or trading our pick away on a dumb acquisition (Ryan, DeBrincat and Chychrun), with the latter two guys being traded for in part because of a mistaken belief this team was better than it was because they made a late season run when all the pressure was off.

Only years we didn't go on an useless late season win streak was 2018 (got Brady), 2019 (didn't have our 1st) and 2020 (got Sanderson).

And people wonder why this team hasn't had more success yet. Keep sabotaging ourselves.

I mean in fairness there probably isn't a big difference between #5 and #7 in this draft, but yeah, it's still annoying, especially when our last two wins we we're behind for most of those game.

I remember hearing this exact same thing in 2021. We ended up missing out on Clarke/Guenther at 8 and got Boucher at 10.

2009 we wanted Kadri but he ended up going 7th and we settled for Cowen at 9th.

2011 we were in position to draft Huberdeau or Landeskog but jumped up in the standings after replacing Tank Commander Elliott with Anderson, ended up with Zibanejad who we then dealt for Brassard because we were too impatient to develop him.

2016 there were rumours we really liked Sergachev, but he ended up going 9th to Montreal and we picked Brown at 11.

2022 there was a clear top 6 that year but we ended up picking 7th and then traded it for DeBrincat. Would we have done that if we could have picked Gauthier or Jiricek? Unlikely IMO.

So yeah a difference of even a couple draft slots can make a pretty big impact.

Boston beats PIT, chances are they take the division.

Out: pick #7, pick #39, 3rd round pick

In: Pick #25-32, 4th round pick, 1 season of Debrincat & Kubalik

That Debrincat trade has aged horribly. Could be a contender for worst in Sens history if Korchinski becomes anything special. What a frustrating rebuild this has been.

I dunno about 2009 but in 2021 there was a pretty clear top 9 and in 2011 the top 4-5ish were also pretty clear.

In this draft guys like Lindstrom,Silayev, Parekh,Helenius, Catton and Iginla could go anywhere from #5 to #10.

Teams make mistakes at the draft all the time, hopefully whoever falls to Ott turns into a good player.

We needed Florida to win the Atlantic to have a shot at a better late 1st. Now that is unlikely, Boston ahead by one with two to play, Florida has one game remaining.

Further, if Boston clinches the division before Tuesday they will rest top players against us. IE - if they beat Washington tomorrow they clinch and likely won’t ice their best line up Tuesday.

We can’t have nice things. Because of “Senators Law” We are going to beat the second string Bruins on Tuesday to drop our draft position. AND have the worst or second worst outcome for our second 1st.

Interesting chronology. Always impressed when people take the time to dig up info like this.

My prediction: Arizona beats CGY then loses to EDM - 77

CGY beats SJS but loses to VAN - 79

Ottawa wins out - 80

Boston clinches division meaning we traded picks #7 & #39 for #26.

Would not be at all surprised given our history.

Did you think we were going to end the season like 0-15?

The ones that hurt are the ducks, Yotes, and blues. That's 12 achievable pts that would have us in the playoffs

Good, Calgary wins.

Now we'll stay below them if either
A. We lose one of our next two games in any fashion.
B. Calgary picks up a point in one of their next two games.

Rangers playing for the division at MSG, Sens would be pretty big underdogs. Same would apply to Boston if WSH squeezes out a win tomorrow.

Arizona's last game will likely be against the Oilers resting everyone, you gotta think they pull off one last W in the mullet. 6th isn't impossible but in all likelihood 7th.

For best draft pick we need:

Two losses for us
Canadiens to pick up 3/4 points in final two against detroit
Arizona to beat Edmonton in their final game

All that happens we pick 5th

No conditions met we pick 7th or worse;
there is a possibility we can pass Arizona but not Montreal if first and third condition met

To avoid catching Calgary and Seattle we need to lose both remaining games or Calgary/Seattle pick up one out of four remaining points in their final two games.

So, we need some good luck to improve from 7th, bad luck to drop further.

For our second first round pick, best case scenario is Florida wins the division (unlikely but possible) AND Boston does not take the conference in the playoffs.

Either way, bandaid will be ripped off soon.
