It's not the fans' fault for their reactions to the game...it's the fault of the broadcasters of their games.
I've been watching the away broadcast exclusively for most of the year, and the differences are so notable that I took notes for a while and was going to report here what I found...but it got to where I wasn't able to simply enjoy watching the game anymore, so I stopped.
Anyway, regarding yesterday's game specifically, their broadcast team spent the majority of their time talking about:
1) Calls/non-calls
2) McDavid's injury
3) Calls/non-calls
4) Derek Ryan's (re)surge(ncy)
It makes sense that the reason the fans complained about reffing is because the media persistently brought it to their attention. This is unlike the majority of other broadcast teams. There have been about 3 games where refereeing was the main thing that the away broadcast discussed. Sadly, one of those was Bret f***ing Hedican, one of my Hurricane heroes...I was *really* disappointed in his analysis of that one game.
(Reffing aside, it may shock some of you to know that the broadcast which was by far the most glowing from a Canes perspective was the most recent Bruins game. You'd have thought Jack and Andy were closet Canes fans as much praise as they heaped on the Canes and as often as they did so.)
The main takeaway for me is that the fans are led into what we believe by the media....and really, we already knew this to be true about media in general, didn't we? It's no surprise that internet comments reflect what the broadcast team focused their attention upon.
Yeah but our complaints are legitimateHmmm, that sounds vaguely familiar.
EDIT: removed link as my intention wasn't to call out 1 person. Just that our board has very recently had a habit of complaining about reffing as well.

Jarvis is a concern only because he isn't going to gain 20 pounds of muscle between now and the end of the year. He needs a year or two of NHL weight training to be strong on his skates and then he'll be fine.
Necas worries me a bit more because he really should be better. He should be headlining one of the top 2nd lines in the league and more often than not he's trying to play the hero with the puck on his stick.
