We weren’t comparing competitive vs not competitive teams. We were comparing desirable destinations and why they might choose Florida over say Toronto. It’s not that complicated.
It’s probably a combination of factors. If all the other factors are equal, Florida (in the form of both the Panthers and the Bolts) have an advantage that some markets simply lack completely. I agree with your point to an extent, however. Denying it as a factor is foolish, but it’s probably just overstated. It’s not like free agents flock towards the state of Florida in droves, and having that slight leg up can be rendered a moot point if the organization is incompetent.

Hope not. Great rule in a cap league. Top players demand and are worth big chunk of the allowed cap space. If one goes down to injury it's just tough luck?
No , player x absence due to injury frees up cap space. Period.

I do not and will not ever have a problem with this so long as the league evaluates the LTIR usages (as in check with actual doctors), which they do. Players aren’t “suddenly healthy”. They’re more than likely still hurt but that’s the gray area hockey culture created.
Every team is allowed to do it. Not every team is capable. Every team has injured players, not every team is good enough to lose a star or has actual trade currency.

Panthers won the Cup last year without needing LTIR even though other teams still utilizing LTIR.
Tkachuk played in the Finals with a broken sternum, and scored, he didn’t play in the final game at 4 nations, he’s legit hurt. Think he’s been hurting since Kucherov knee on kneed him. Could be wrong though.
All that said, I hate the loophole and am glad we won without it, but there’s no way we repeat without filling in that cap space with a capable player until he comes back.

Really!? Players choosing lifestyle has kind of been the kiss of death for places like TO and NYR. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Oh boohoo taxes. You think players put teams like Edmonton or Winnipeg on their no-trade list because of taxes? Who would want to play there rather than Tampa or Florida? There are ways around the taxes that players such as Matthews are already taking advantage of.

There is no empirical relationship between tax rates and winning % in the salary cap era. I ran this analysis over the summer:
Here is the regular season data from 2006-2024:
R^2 of 0.019 = no relationship between tax rate and regular season points%.
Here is the data for playoff wins and winning %:
R^2 of 0.003 (wins) and 0.045 (win %) means there is no relationship between playoff success and effective income tax.
Whatever impact on success you think tax rates might be having, it is either being offset by other factors, or it's not measurable.

Before the Panthers became who they are now, the destination was the main reason why players chose to sign with the Panthers. This has been stated by players in the past, that they came down to South Florida to get one last check and relax, because winning was not pushed as a priority.
That is not the case anymore. Players come to the Panthers because they are one of the premier destinations in the league, with arguably the best management, coaching staff, training staff, and training facilities in the league. Players will not be signed anymore unless they buy into what the coach/GM want from them, and no more retirement contracts will be provided. The destination is now an added incentive to sign with the team, not the main reason anymore.

Didn’t the panthers utilize the LTIR business a few years back when Ekblad was out for the season, and returned for the playoffs, but they used his salary to pick up Claude Giroux?

This is not Mark Stone though. Chucky has been battling some health issues since the Vegas series. His current injury, at this time, is a legitimate usage of LTIR (not that I am a fan of the clause at all).

Incidentally, if you're already basically assured a playoff spot, holding out guys nursing an injury is smart regardless of cap considerations. I don't really have a problem with the rule. Makes the deadline and arguably the playoffs themselves more interesting. I wouldn't mind a revisit of the details but making LTIR players count fully against the cap doesn't seem like the solution, nor does the often floated "calculate the cap during the playoffs" solution for reasons fully discussed ad nauseum.
In any case teams would be silly not to take advantage of it as it's written today.

Yea honestly I'm surprised the league decided the World Cup would be played mid season and not in its historic time of late August/early September. Teams would be happier in the event of injury; you'd likely begetting the player back before playoffs instead of now when you could lose him for the rest of the year and part if not all of the post season.

Te tax thing is such an excuse. Panthers were bad for over two decades and now they win and we have to start fixing the tax issue?
