I'm curious to see if Buffalo notices a local kid making good somewhere else. I don't know if they even tried signing him coming out of college, but he seems like he's on the cusp of being able to push into an NHL lineup with how he tore up the AHL playoffs.

He should try and sign with Edmonton. They will need cheap wingers and maybe he could make their team.

I honestly think Europe would be a great idea for him. He can spend a year or two playing against men, getting stronger and be fully prepared for a full-time NHL job. As it is now, being a fringe NHL/AHL guy is no way to live. Go make some money and hone your skill. Then come back and give it a real shot.

He's accomplished a lot in the AHL.
imho, he deserves a fair amount of time with the 'Canes to show his stuff.

Mark Streit
Johan Hedberg
Martin St. Louis
Mike Knuble
Tim Thomas
Robert Lang
Derek Ryan

I mean how good is the shot if you're too slow to get to the spot where you can use it

Every team had a few guys like that not even that long ago, and they were effective. Plod along, allow other players to establish possession in the zone, work your way to a soft spot in the defense, bang. However, the game has sped up in the last 5ish years, and that's no longer as viable a path as it once was.

I've watched a lot of Poturalski and I have to say, I don't think he's particularly slow nor particularly fast. I'd say average.

A guy who looks average speed while playing in the AHL will look slow in the NHL. That's not to say he can't reach the bottom end of the speed range for an NHLer- from what I've seen of him in preseason games, he probably can, but if he's at the bottom of the range he'll be replacement level, not a star.

I don't see that Poturalski looks noticeably slow, but whatever he lacks he can make up for by the way he thinks the game. If it's an issue anywhere, it's on the backcheck, but even that is more about knowing when to take a risk than straight-up footspeed.

Just for reference, here are the more recent ones that have more or less turned into decent+ NHLrs. Roughly 7 guys in the past 20 years.

2015: Eichel
2014: Gaudreau
2006: Matt Carle
2002: Jordan Leopold
2001: Ryan Miller
1998: Chris Drury
1997: Brendan Morrison
How could leave 2019 winner Cale Makar out?
