Details of the deal and you bring up "by all accounts was going to be bought out".

There was no indication whatsoever by CBJ that they were going to buy him out. Only media speculation.
Okay, sure. And? Let's be honest about this though. Was the media speculating he was a buyout candidate because he'd been playing so well? Or was he playing poorly? To the point he'd been relegated to sitting? It's not like he was lights out and was playing off the charts here. He'd lost his role because he wasn't getting it done. Hence why a guy like that, making too much money to sit and watch was being speculated as a potential buyout.

Does it only being media speculation make it any less egregious that Sweeney took on the full boat and couldn't get Columbus to retain a cent? Especially when you saw teams at the deadline retaining money left and right?

Certainlty cant argue against the decision making of Columbus' management team and coaching staff these last few years.

You can doubt them all you want. Either way he wasn’t playing and Sweeney bailed them out by taking Peeke’s full contract off their hands without making them retain anything. And folks can dismiss that as insignificant if they want but doing so is foolhardy. In a hard cap world you save space whenever and wherever you can.

I don't really know what to think of the player- seems like he fits the need on the blueline for the next couple years - a younger Forbort to replace the older Forbort who's done here.

Don't think a 3rd is that much to give for a 25 year old physical defenseman with 200+ games in the league.

Also don't really care if they shaved his deal down or not because they're not really up against it with Forbort and Gryz coming off the books, and kids like Lorhei and Wortherspoon ready to step up on the cheap. 2.75 aint getting in anyones way.

I get your irritation with it in the abstract, and he might be Reilly 2.0 or get injured and go the way of Forbort. He might have growing pains picking up the Bruins defensive system on the fly. He could just as easy be a steal too.

I’m not worked up over it at all, tbh and I’m very interested in getting a look at him tonight. Should be interesting. My criticism has always been about the deal simply because we’ve all seen Sweeney make similar moves like this before and they’ve come back to hamstring them.

CBJ added a playing top 5 pick and Provorov to their D this year. This explains the drop-off in playing availability.
And Damon Severson, the biggest free agent signing of the offseason.

That's why the "buyout candidate" stuff is nonsense, Peeke is easily worth his contract. It's only because Columbus spent huge money on the position while they already had a lot of money committed there, creating a logjam when no one was absorbing any contracts.

When he played he was nowhere near worth his contract. Last year too. Reclamation project? Sure. Can he thrive in a better environment? Quite possibly. Was the deal commensurate with other deals for players of his accomplishments, or is his salary in line? Not at all.

The hatred of Peeke’s contract is going to cause Marchy and I to unite on this one and it will be insufferable lmao

yep, top shelf:)

Think we`ve traded with the Jackets twice for D men in the past

Blake Parlett , can`t recall what year and our old buddy Quaider

I`ll give ya`ll 2 guesses which one I hope he becomes more like understanding Peeke is a Greg Campbell like fighter:) but hoping for the same results we got after Quaider became a Bruin, both 2nd rounders

They dealt a 5th round pick for McQuaid which looks great until you find out who was eventually selected with that pick.

There are 78 right handed defensemen not on their ELC's who have played 20 games this season and averaged 15+ minutes, only 17 make less than 2.5 million. Most of them either had little NHL experience coming into this season or are over 30. Peeke's AAV is a little higher because they bought one UFA season but he is paid appropriately.

You can't tell him that he only uses analytics to his advantage.
Good to see you posting dafoomie
