Small sample, may be the new team bounce. But right now, Copp looks like a trade deadline steal of a deal for NYR.
Once again Chevy waited too long to trade him when the return would have been higher, seriously Chevy knew he wasn't signing here and he dithered as usual! If the Jets fail to make the playoffs that inaction looks even dumber!

Errr, I think the expectation was that this was going to be a contending year with Copp as a self-rental.

I always liked Copp! I was a big fan of the pick. He Went Un-drafted in his first year eligibility and had a good 2 nd half of the season at his first year at Michigan. Then Chevy drafted him in 2023.

I remember arguing hard for him in our 2014 top 25 rated Jet prospects thread. I wanted him as high as early as 7-8-9-10. Others were picking bums like 2014 2nd round pick Glover (recency bias) and goalie Commrie b4 him.

He has progressed every year getting better and better.

I’m glad we traded him for the haul that we got out of NyR …… I hope NYR win 2 series this year and the Jets get that late NYR first pick this year.

The 2nd 2nd round pick….. we have an option to postpone to the 2023 draft…

I would think that would be wise choice to postpone it!
Not sure why we'd defer it. It's the Blues 2nd rounder this year or the Rangers' 2nd rounder next year. Unless the Blues go to the Stanley Cup, you might take next year's, but otherwise you'd expect those picks to be in the same range, so it's much better to take it now that wait. prospect in hand is better than one in the bush.

The alternative course last summer was to not acquire Dillon. Extend Copp on a 6x4.5m contract and let Heinola/Samberg play. We certainly had no cap space to sign Copp to anything more than a one year deal.

What was the better offer?

Heinola isn’t a NHL player yet. Samberg had/has very little pro track record. You can try and go with them but that just seems like a great way to have Beaulieu play 75 games.

Give me Dillon all day, he is something the Jets need in the line up.

you can have him all day. we'd be better next year if we'd have played Heinola and Samberg. Probably would've been better this year too.

Rangers Need to Re-Sign Copp During the Offseason

Rangers loving Copp... talking about him as their solution to 2C - kind of like we should have.

Suggesting five years at 4-4.5 million... if he was available for that, i sure hope we offered at least that much and didn't just let him walk without trying.

Just because he is willing to sign with NYR (or anyone else) for a number doesn't mean he would be willing to sign with us for that same number. He has been setting himself up for UFA for years.

copp's been great in NYR. i doubt he will sign here. why would he? he's probably going to get more money elsewhere with a more significant role, & if he wants to chase a cup for instance, that likely is not here next season. i think perfetti likely is a top-6er, so no spot for him.

I’d be hesitant coming to the conclusion that Copp could’ve been an answer for our 2C...Panarin has a reputation of inflating anyone’s numbers who plays with him.

With that being said Copp did us no favours with his play leading in the TDL and his injury didn’t help. He should’ve easily fetched a first or a prospect like the other Barron brother

Wonder what @sipowicz thoughts are on Copp now that he is on a 30 goal pace and over PPG with the Rangers?

I wonder if Copp turns out to be the Jets' William Karlsson.
