Really wish we could have kept this valuable Jet.

Copp always gave 100%, played an intelligent and responsible game. I had always hoped we gave him a proper offer and gave him and A. One of my all-time favorites.

A two-way LW/C who can play up and down the lineup, solid PK, natural leader. Worth every penny he gets (as long as it's under 4M)

On the other hand man did he whiff on golden chances, especially early in his career.

Best of luck Copper!!

Jets did give him a good offer 5 years for $20M, fair offer he should have taken!

This one hurts. Copp is the kind of player that every championship team needs--strong defensive game, top 6 (and growing) offensive production, plays big minutes in every situation, great ambassador and leader.

I would not be surprised at all if he wins a Cup with NYR and finds work in their organization or media after his playing career is over.

Happy for him. Not happy with TNSE these days.

What I liked most about Copp was his ability to continually improve upon every aspect of his game over the years. Not many players keep improving into their late 20’s, yet I wouldn’t be shocked if he has a career year at 30.

He clearly puts in the work and deserves a good pay raise.

All the best to Copper 👍

I'd argue he's been our best player since he's gotten here.

What were the issues with him in Winnipeg?

Pretty much as has been said, no issues. I think he liked it here, and we liked him as a player.

Rumoured to have turned down an offer of 5 year, $4M AAV before being traded (which most here think was a fair offer for a player of his caliber). He likely wants to get the best contract he can as a UFA this summer.

Copp is an Overcharge client who wants $$$. Sorry, that does not fit in with the Jets philosophy of having players buy into the team and provide good value contracts. Almost every core member have signed for an AAV that we think was a steal.

Best of luck to Copp. Hope the Rangers make it to the conference finals for obvious reasons.

I am no fan of Overcharge but….. hey we did take Copp to arbitration as a hazing ritual because we lacked foresight that maybe a guy stapled to big Adam might actually be able to score if set free. This org and most of the people on this board don’t seem to value players in our in the top 6 that are actually really good 200 foot players or at least they undervalue D. We like the cotton candy types that taste sweet on offense but melt in your mouth when it comes time to keeping the puck out of our own net. Hey did I want to sign Copp to a big contract this off season, nope. Do I think we had multiple shots at getting him into a fair deal that would have worked out really well for us…….hell yes.

Great post, and the bolded is pretty key. The detailed account of that arbitration that The Athletic ran just after it happened made it pretty clear that Copp and his team were open to a longer-term deal then. Chevy and the org made a call, and chose Big Adam L (and others) as their long-term core and Copp was always going to be on the outside looking in at that point.

It was a puzzling move even then for a valuable player, and I found Chevy's remark at the TDL that "we didn't want to be at this point/ here" a classic piece of deflection: Chevy's call to go to arb and then nearly go there again, Chevy's call to bring in both Schmidt and Dillon to eat up that cap, Chevy's call to go long with Lowry, etc etc.

Our GM is not powerless in the face of ambitious players and their representatives. He makes choices in terms of team makeup and direction. If he didn't want to be at that point he didn't have to pave the way there.

Sorry for the rant -- increasingly irritates me when powerful people who make consequential decisions look to the heavens when those decisions go south.

Copp had real value as a strong, sold, value-adding glue piece between our $#$^**! scoring and whatevering lines. Now we have Apples, who has good numbers and will be able to contribute at not-quite Copp levels. But things might have different had this org wanted them to be, indeed.

As others have said, at this point he is going to check out the free agent market to see what is out there and so we had to trade him rather than not make playoffs and then risk losing him for nothing.

Our offer will still be there waiting for him in free agency but it just feels like Detroit will likely pay more and slap a letter on him as well. He's always been a great player, an excellent representative of the organization and a team leader, even though he didn't wear a letter here. Great guy that has earned whatever good comes his way.

I do secretly hope that we sign him back in free agency but realize that ship has likely sailed.

Copp scored the OT winner setup by the breadman Got chemistry with a good team. He’s better off just staying with the Rangers even with discount Be interesting to see what his agent can get for him

Could we have signed him long-term a couple of years ago and have it look like a steal now? Yes. Would that have been risky? Yes. Did we have the salary cap dollars to do so? No.

It’s all about choices. I would have made room for Copp earlier but thats just me. I said it at the time but I would have never gone to arbitration with him. In fairness I tend to overvalue the Copp, Ryan O’Rielly type players that add more defense while not being black holes offensively. I realize O’Reilly is better but I am sure you get my drift.

IMO raw points get overvalued in the NHL and defenisve impact by forwards which is harder to measure gets undervalued. We bet against Copp and we lost. I was happy to get assets for him at the TD, it was time to say goodbye.

I always liked Copp! I was a big fan of the pick. He Went Un-drafted in his first year eligibility and had a good 2 nd half of the season at his first year at Michigan. Then Chevy drafted him in 2023.

I remember arguing hard for him in our 2014 top 25 rated Jet prospects thread. I wanted him as high as early as 7-8-9-10. Others were picking bums like 2014 2nd round pick Glover (recency bias) and goalie Commrie b4 him.

He has progressed every year getting better and better.

I’m glad we traded him for the haul that we got out of NyR …… I hope NYR win 2 series this year and the Jets get that late NYR first pick this year.

The 2nd 2nd round pick….. we have an option to postpone to the 2023 draft…

I would think that would be wise choice to postpone it!

All we had to do was give Copp time to develop as our 2C... by the looks of it now, he just needed a chance and he had chemistry with Ehlers.

Jets would have saved the 4th round pick for Eakins, 1st and Lemieux for Hayes... cupboard would be a lot less bare.

Instead we could never breakup Lowry-Copp as our 'shutdown' line - and tried to force deadline signings into the top six... the org has to break this cycle. We have a chance with Apples now and he will probably be stapled to the third line while we gush over Sanford before he leaves.

Would hardly call 2 2nds a haul.
