.....¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The trade to get him no matter how much it was needed at the time, now that he is officially gone hurts. Losing a first for 16 games.

Yup. Lost a 1st for nothing sadly.

1st round picks are no guarantee, but that's also why you don't want to lose too many of them because they don't all pan out, but some do and it's easier to build the core of a team through draft/development than free agency. The last 10 years we've had 4 1st rounders pan out well - Doughty, Kopitar, Pearson and Lewis. Forbort was too but still have to see how well he pans out. So losing those "chances" hurts. Of course, Toffoli was a 2nd round pick and looks better than Pearson so you never know. Good thing the Kings development staff is top notch.

The best thing the Kings could do is win another Cup so at least it's the last pick of the 1st round so hey, it's practically a 2nd round pick.

Deano probably hopes this was his worst season as gm. Trade was good/great at the time but with circumstances it turned out to be a terrible asset management. Team didn't make postseason and Sekera didn't have the chance to adapt to environment.

This was his last chance for a big contract, you can't really blame him. Especially in a business where your career can end the next day.

Besides, I really expect the Oilers to become great in the next couple of years.

People have been saying that for 10 years. Their whole lineup consists of 1st round draft picks whose careers have stalled.

They finally dispatched the poisonous core that was their inept management. Perhaps things will change, but I will believe it when I see it.

He's his own worst critic and evaluates the heck out of himself, that much we know, but I sure hope it doesn't make him gun shy or second guess himself. Let's not forget his string of deadline deals has been arguably the best in NHL history. Penner, Carter, Regehr, Gaborik, Sekera all in a row IIRC. We needed a big presence on the top line and got that in Penner, who helped immensely the NEXT year. Carter is as win as it gets. Regehr was a huge get with the shape of our D that year (rookie Muzzin, departing Scuderi, injured Mitchell). Gaborik led the playoffs in scoring and is still a strong goal scorer. Sekera was the best d-man available at the deadline when we were missing Voynov all year, he started to settle in after 6 or so games, but he obviously couldn't elevate the team on just his own (nor could Voynov), then he got unfortunately injured so we didn't get to see the best of him imo. That get would have been huge had we MADE the playoffs as we kept him away from Chicago et. al. as well.

In hindsight the asset management looks bad, and this whole year has truly been a gong show, but I still make that move every day, DL is usually a wizard with those things. I'd say out of those five 3 are MAJOR hits, 1 is a hit (Penner), one is a miss due to circumstance more than anything (Sekera).

I say this as an Oilers fan... A NTC means nothing in Edmonton.

Sure it does, in the past it's be a race to see how fast you were willing to wave it.;)
But I think his addition on the blue line and nurse coming up they will have some success. But the west is brutal so it could just be another disappointment.

$5.5M x 6 years was fair market value. Sekera got that in Edmonton and likely had similar offers elsewhere. Criticize the Oilers if you wish, but you're wrong for criticizing Sekera for "going after money". This is and will be the biggest contract of his life. He owed nothing to the LA Kings.

Is this thread a joke? What should we be appreciative of?

On to this post.
I agree with you that $5.5M is fair for Sekera. I thought that was around what LA had offered him as well. The only difference I think is LA was not willing to include an NTC. Sucks to lose him over that.
