Probably the best for which we could have hoped. I thought it possible to fetch a second, but I'm not complaining about the 3rd.

A 3rd for a pending UFA Dman who can't play defense isn't bad.

Bill knows what's up.

Nothing extraordinary but in a recent pregame show on radio (not verbatim):

Tim Saunders: Bundy, Meszaros has been playing well of late.

Chris Therien: Yes, Tim, he has provided the offense, scored a couple of goals, had a spark...

Saunders: and his defense?

Therien: Um, yaaaaaahhhhh, it's getting there, could be better...

You get the picture.

Flyers have over $6M in cap space right now. This doesn't sound like a thing that will still be a thing in an hour.

 Therien is great. He doesn't beat around the bush...and that's great for a radio guy. When you can't see the play you need someone who's really being honest. The Caps' radio dude doesn't do that, you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt.

The return hasn't been confirmed yet. Maybe it is conditional or either/or based on games played.

With Andrew MacDonald in the fold, the Flyers had little use for defenseman Andrej Meszaros.

The Flyers traded Meszaros, who was scheduled to be scratched for the 25th game this season tonight against Washington, to the Bruins in exchange for a third-round pick.

The deal was first reported by Rogers Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy.

Meszaros, 28, had his confidence shaken by numerous injuries and a lack of playing time with the Flyers. After a 295-game ironman streak to begin his career, Meszaros has dealt with multiple shoulder injuries and surgeries, a lower-back issue and a torn Achilles tendon.

TSN confirmation

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded defenceman Andrej Meszaros to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

In 38 games with the Flyers this season, Meszaros has scored five goals an added 12 assists.

Meszaros, 28, is currently in the final year of a six-year deal he signed prior to the 2008-09 season worth an average annual value of $4 million. He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Added to OP.

wow. that's an awesome return given some of the recent trades for defensemen.

as flashy as he was offensively at times this season he just has no defense left in him whatsoever. it was pretty painful to watch. best of luck to him.

I hoped that Grossman /Schenn would be going when MacDonald was acquired.

A 3rd is not bad for Meszaros, a 2nd would have been better.
Seems like teams are not overpaying for players.

There just isn't a lot of great D talent to go around. Maybe GMs have started to realize the average Dman isn't worth spending a lot on?

His injury history and hefty salary may have scared away some bidders...

When you can get MacDonald on an expiring contract at 550K to play on the third pairing there is a realistic chance you will get him signed in the offseason and maybe not overpay by a big margin. Mesz on the other hand will be the 6th or 7th defenseman carrying a 4M contract on his back and comes as a typical rental player.

Timmeh says the return pick is in 2014.

According to ProSportsTransactions, the Bruins owned their pick only in the third round of 2014 (it isn't another team's).

Ok, so for the folks ragging on the MacDonald trade...is this trade considered a good deal?
