Man I don't have a chance to watch Flames games so I have to go by cards like this and the opinions of you guys, the fans. But I know Weegar has always been good on defense, ever since Florida. I don't know much about Andersson, maybe I'm wrong and these cards don't reflect that.

Is Andersson good at defense? Bad? Average? Decent? I'm mainly interested in his game and style of play. Maybe the first pair of Dahlin - Andersson will be very good?

I just think Weegar is more needed right now, his vet leadership, his defensive play, he has at least some connection to Buffalo. While I don't believe anyone wants to come to Buffalo anymore, maybe even Andersson probably has Buffalo in his six M-NTC teams.
In my view those stats cards back up the old mark one eyeball.

Weegar is the better defencemen of the two.

Flames fandom has been split between three guys up until they moved Hanifin last year. Hanifin fan boys, Andersson lovers and Weegar truthers

The reality is all 3 probably slot somewhere in the 20-50 range among active defensemen and whoever is playing the best at the moment slots above the other 2

Florida would love to have RA but just don't have the combination of assets IMO.

2026 1st, 2nd best prospect and Rodrigues?

What are the Flames needs? Centers?

Andersson seems like the prize Dman potentially available.

I could see the Flames keeping him, and let next year play out.

I'd assume Weegar just isn't available. Calgary cannot rebuild. They have too many veteran contracts they can't move and they are still competitive.

The only reason Andersson would be available is if they feel he could walk at the end of his deal. By that logic, they could get much more value if they traded him this year.

However, they are playing well now. I could see them going for the playoffs. If that happens, then I like their odds at re-signing him, which is their most preferred outcome. So why not keep that door open?

From Ottawa for Andersson, option of:

Josh Norris and JBD
or
Ridley Grieg and JBD

Main piece in each are both centres - one established and signed longterm, the other cheaper - Norris likely has more offence than Greig, Grieg is a hybrid offence and super rat.

JBD is included to give you a RD that can for sure play in the top 6.

But Andersson is not the type of defenseman we need. 31 is not that much for a player like him. I just don't see why we need another PMD who wants PP time. Weegar on the other hand is definitely a better defenseman in defense, can play both sides, a perfect veteran and mentor for our young defense.
The highlighted is exactly why Calgary will not be trading him.

Andersson will almost certainly be shopped but unless a worthwhile deal is offered he won't be traded.

Calgary when 7-5-3 in November and are currently 4-2-3 in December. Their current standing is widely due to OT and SO points.

100%, they are all very comparable.

I asked about Greig, JBD, and a 1st for Weegar, and it didn't seem to garner any interest.

I take Anderssen all day over Weager. I like quickness.
whose tougher.. between the two? weeger i think. can fight too

Slightly prefer Weegar as his defence is soo good. Ras is awesome as well. Both are exactly what the Canucks desperately need. Only concern would be Weegar's age

Canucks offer:

Lekkerimaki
Sawyer Mynio
1st
4th

Lekky and Mynio are both in the top 5 of Canucks top prospects. Lekky was WJC MVP last year and is a pure sniper. 11Goals in 18 games in the AHL thus far. Mynio is one of our top Dman prospects. Made Team Canada WJC. Getting reviews like " most improved player in CHL hockey" " Elite CHL defender"
His game has been compared to the likes of Dan Hamhuis/Devon Toews
maybe jett woo instead of sawyer mynio.

If Andersson becomes available and is willing to sign a long-term contract, then you can expect a serious offer from Montreal.

What does Calgary need?

C or LD ideally. But I doubt Montreal wants to part with Hage as they need to find another C as well. Don’t really see a fit between what the Habs would be willing to give up and what Calgary would want

It's not impossible to imagine Hage being made available for a player of Andersson's caliber. Habs have assets to address the center position if they lose Hage. We also have a solid LD prospect in Adam Engstrom, and we are going to have a top 10 draft pick as well as Calgary's pick, which, as far as I understand the conditions, could be as high as 11th. These could be turned into C or LD that you need.

It would be in Montreal’s interest to probably wait until the summer to make this deal as Calgary moving Andersson would dramatically increase their chances of finishing bottom 10 meaning the Habs would get the Florida pick instead

Though I still think the flames have too many quality vets and with a goalie like Wolf they likely won’t ever truly bottom out. Doomed to be in that sloppy middle where they’ll have to find the top end talent they need either via trade or with picks that are in the mid first round

It’s not a bad offer but I think if they were moving him for that kind of package they could probably get a higher first than the Edmonton one

Would swapping St.Louis 2nd with Beau Akey be better for the Flames? Gives them another D prospect, right shot taken 2nd round in '23

What about a ready made player like Matheson. We have to many LHD. A trade involving Matheson for Anderson/Weager?

No thanks, if they’re moving Andersson or Weegar it’s gotta be for a really solid futures package or centered around a younger C.

Not a lot of interest in Matheson here

Again value wise I don’t think you’re way off but if the Flames move him I think most fans would prefer less assets that are higher quality than a bunch of pretty good stuff

I’d rather just re up him if that’s all that’s out there but that’s just my personal opinion

Personally I would move on from both players. They are very solid top pair dmen, but RD is the one position I see high end depth in the organization (Parekh, Brustewicz, Mews).
Players like Kulich/Cozens, Cal Richie, Lekkerimakki are all very interesting.

Plus, I think Huska has an amazing track record of developing defenseman going back to his Kelowna days.

That said I don’t think the Flames have ever made moves that are a step back for a future leap forward.

Something around Cozens/Kulich for Weegar would interest me.
