Anders Lee’s Role and the team outlook for Next season. 2026/2027

The dysfunctional power play has really hurt Lee. I think there is a spot for him in the middle six if they put more shots on net and used his screening and garbage goal ability.

If that won’t be the game plan Lee may not have a roll.

Engvall is also the perfect bury in AHL candidate. I think the difference of him in the A or bought out is only a few hundred thousand. Might as well eat that over 4 years rather than 8?

You basically can save 1.15M if you send a player to the AHL, and I assume that number only goes up as the cap goes up

In Engvall's case it's do you want to buy him out and pay him 1.17M a year for 8 years not to play or bury him in the minors and pay him 2.35M and have a warm body ready to go. THis year worked out perfectly for us where he basically is injured for the year, one has to wonder if that will be a normal thing in which case buying him out would be stupid.

Horvat is the next captain. Schaefer and barzal with the A's.
Probably Horvat/Pulock/Pelech.

As for Lee, NYI either should move on or he could play in a diminished role. I think he could actually play in a 4th line role, but not as captain, and I don't think he'd want to. So, I think he moves on.

Interesting that Darche mentioned the C market. When I saw the Schenn deal I figured Pageau was not signed, so I was surprised by that announcement. So, NYI are set at C next season unless Nelson makes it interesting for Cizikas.

For everyone saying that it's not worth paying value to move Engvall's contract, or buying him out, I agree. But I also don't know about the 'never lining up again' statement - I think he'll have his chance in camp. I don't mind adding some speed to that 4th line.

The position of focus for acquisitions in the offseason is gonna be RD. With Schaefer-Pelech-Romanov-George they're okay at LD (Aitcheson, I assume, will be in the AHL), but they have to improve on the right hand side. NYI will need improvements on the wing to come from within the system.

Don't be surprised if Schaefer is the next captain.
I know he’s special and I know he’s got a great leadership qualities. But I’m not in favor of giving teenagers or really, really young player of the captaincy. Let him just worry about playing. Horvat can be the next captain and then after him, hopefully Schaefer. I understand our exceptions and it works out like Landeskog but I’d still prefer a vet.

Lee’s play with Pageau and Holmstrom may have been good enough to convince Darche to offer him an extension.

If Lee is done then give Cizikas the C for next year. He will also be done after next season and we then can look what's the chemistry then.

I’ll bet you that Cizikas won’t be an Islander next season. At most, his tenure here will end in one more season. That’s not someone you designate as your captain.

Not sure if you saw the Darche interview from today, but he said he reached out to Lee before he resigned Pageau so that Lee was aware of what was going to happen.

He also referenced Pageau being a center so it became clear to me how much he values the center position (and in regardless to a wing).

To further he commented that Schenn is signed for 2 more years so now with Horvat, Schenn, Pageau, and Cizikas (and Ritchie waiting in the wings - Pun intended), they look very strong that way.

To me it's just very telling that Darche hasn't even begin talks with Lee on a deal yet. It's one thing to try and sign Lee, but his price is too high...But it's another to not even open talks with him....Especially when you just resigned Pageau.

You have to think that Darche is prepared to let Lee walk. If that is the case you have to wonder why. I could see him wanting to improve team speed in in that way, but if that is the case then why commit serious assetes to acquire Schenn (and Soucy/Palat) who doesn't increaes team speed.

Also goal scoring is the #1 thing this team needs and right now Lee is 5th on the team in goals. And this is before we talk about all the intangibles Lee brings.

If you're going to let him go then you better have a plan in place to get younger/faster at the significant hole him leaving is going to open up.

Let Lee walk and buy out the rest. No offers for Soucy and Shabanov. Trade Cizikas at the draft.
Agree with this. This may fit more on the post that says pick an Islanders take that no one would agree with. You could bury Engvall and bring him up sparingly. His contract is not good and his term is down right terrible.

With that being said, maybe he could provide a spark in the bottom 9 on occasion. I believe he has an ankle injury and if his skating will never be the same, he's gotta go. He is a frustrating player for sure as he always leaves you wanting more. I always thought maybe he would be a decent on the pk with his speed if he wasn't allergic to blocking shots and getting in the lanes.

I do not think timing here has anything to do with whether he is staying or going. If i am not mistaken Lee was quite the late signing last tine around.

You don’t need a plan to let Lee walk, you just let him walk.

If the Isles are not going to shoot the puck at the net while he’s standing there, then he ain’t going to score goals. The isles would rather pass 400x than put the puck in front of the net for a dirty goal.

He’ll get a 2 year deal from someone.

He could easily go the way of Bailey also, Where they call him down for a gig and be like, sorry, think we are going to pass.

Landeskog was 19 when he was made captain.

Youngest ever in NHL history…..

Just saying it’s an option. (I’d pick Horvat)
