Todd isn’t getting paid $25M to spend five years collecting moral victories and developing outstanding young men. He’s getting paid to win more than he loses over the course of the deal. So you need to make hay starting year three or everyone’s position is tenuous.

I don’t blame nhl coaches for favoring vets. They all do unless explicitly told not to. Blake tells Todd you need to win more games and develop some kids because that is politically correct. But Todd knows that the only part that really matters is the games won component. And he’s going to flog the shit out of all the guys that make the most money.

Because if they win more games, everyone looks like a genius. And if they don’t, well no one can point to the coach not using what the GM paid the most for this season. It’s hack 101 and like I said, I get why nhl coaches work this way and don’t fault them for it.

What I don’t get is how any fan shares this attitude. You get the most fans by being entertaining. Promoting kids over vets makes the game more exciting. The people who are fans but pretend to be in the business of hockey are a small fraction of the overall audience. No one should listen to any fan who says they know how hockey decisions are really made.

I don't blame TM for favoring vets in a raw vacuum--the problem is the results heavily argue against the usage of those vets. It's almost 1-to-1 correlation with our regular complaints--Kopitar icetime > 21 minutes, bad third line, AA vs. Grundstrom for example.

Are we talking player popularity contests or which franchise sells more tickets?

I used the words exciting and entertaining in general. By your own admission you find the team entertaining when compared to its most recent versions. If you want to hold a narrow point of view, I’m not going to try to convince you otherwise.

I’m just saying at the end of the day, it’s about winning because that equates to selling tickets. Just like making it to the playoffs generates more team revenue.

Management has two areas they need to excel at, winning games and developing or acquiring talent to help win games. They are trying to do both at the same time and that will never change.

The only reason I can see for it is that the team is +3 in goal differential. With things that’s tight, you can’t create risk not playing the highest paid guys because your odds of winning every night are at best 55/45.

I agree with your take. I’m just skeptical that trying to do multiple things at the same time will pay off. But you’re right that at the end of the day we should take satisfaction that the team has played way better than expected by most of the wider opinions.

I'm not even mad if the Kings fail to make the playoffs. I look at this year as a development year. I want QB to get as much time as possible and to develop. It seems that you can't have both success and development. Look at NYR and Lafreniere.
