Post-Game Talk: Anaheim @ Nashville: You Can't Spell FU Barry without FUBAR

Sucks that even after getting multiple high picks, including Bedard and Celebrini, that the Hawks and Sharks are still far worse than us in the standings.

That Buffalo has been a disaster for over a decade and can still easily dip below us in the lottery if we hit another win streak in these last 14 games.

And worse, the fact that we're even down here with these teams and even if we win the lottery, or get a top forward in the top 2-3 picks, look at the company we're surrounded by and it's not exactly inspiring that sucking so bad this year will be a launching pad for better times down the road.

So listening to Burnettes interview on the radio on the way to work he said we have a very young back end. That isn't true we have an inexperienced backend not very young kinda mid. The problem with this franchise is they think 25 is young and it really isnt. At 25 you are at the age when you should be entering your prime years 25-30. The only young player we have on our defense is barron and he's horrible and shouldn't even be on the ice. Another terrible pickup by trotz. Man they're piling up. The ducks who we just played can say they have a younger defense. They have 4 of their 6 defenseman under the age of 25. And probably their best one just turned 24 last month. Mintyukov is only 21 and this is his 2nd year already. We refuse to play our young when they are actually young then call them young with they are 25+
Also take into account we sucked earlier in the season too when we had

Josi 35
Skjei 30
Carrier 28
Lauzon 27
Filler ~24
Schenn 35

Sure last night's crew was a fair bit younger than where we started but we were terrible with a more experienced group as well. Honestly, Barron would be the only defenseman I'd call "young". He is only 23. Del G and Stastney are 25 which is pretty mid aged for d men.

They're NHL inexperienced so maybe that's more along the lines of what he means. I think Skjei has more games played than everyone else that played yesterday combined excluded Oesterle but he is realistically just a long running 6/7 dman. But once again, we were terrible with an experienced group we started with as well. So I'm tired of his excuses

Sharks defense is still very sus. I think they'll be working towards fixing that this year but they have a nice looking forward group and great prospect in goal. It takes a whole team to win which is why I think we are fairly screwed going forward. All our top talent is really old and we don't have any young players stepping up or even being given the opportunity to step up. If those things don't change, we are gonna be right there with them but with a GM that's in denial

If the Sharks get Schaefer this year to go with Dickenson, I imagine they'll be able to declare "Mission Accomplished" on D as well.

The Sharks are certainly well along the path of scorched earth rebuild. Barring development setbacks and outright busts [Buffalo], they should rebound to a mushy middle to middling playoff team [New Jersey]. The next question, should that happen, is if they can find just the right complimentary pieces to fill in around the talent they acquired by tanking [Tampa]. That last step is the one that's threading the needle from the other side of the room sort of degree of difficulty.

Agreed. They should continue to get much better as their young group starts to step up

Celebrini
Will Smith
Eklund
Musty/Bystedt
Dickenson
Askarov

Properly surround them with vets and fortify the defense and they should be good.

The main problem for me is Stamkos going 0-for-February and almost the same for October. For a guy pulling $8M and guaranteed 1st line/PP1 icetime, I think you want a little more than sort of Craig Smith-streakiness and even 27 goals or whatever he'll end up with. I don't think many teams out there, even ones that suck like our team does, really want to pay a guy $8M for just 50 pts and -25 or whatever he'll end up at.

I'm still very much in the "would give Stamkos away for free" just to get out of that contract camp. But agreed on the Brunette contribution. He's a player who should be getting 15-16 minutes, not 18-20, and he'd probably produce almost exactly the same numbers without having his 5-on-5 metrics wrecked as much by the overuse. His numbers are awful for a 1st line player. But indeed they could be mitigated with better coaching. Marchessault and O'Reilly have roughly the same production as Stamkos, and it makes more sense for guys getting paid $4.5-5.5M instead of $8M.
What he is getting paid has nothing to do with what he was expected to produce. Everyone should have known he was overpaid for what he was going to bring. Tampa fans told us what we were getting so the problem isn't in production, the problem is what the idiotic GM decided to pay him.

I knew he wasn't going to pull much more than 25-30g so I'm not sure why others here are disappointed with that. The only difference was I expected it to be 90% PP and him pulling 2nd to 3rd line minutes 5v5.

I mean he barely got 40 last season playing with Kucherov and we don't have anyone on that level.

I can't believe after all the talk of giving young guys more ice time the young forwards were last in ice time. Again. Who could've foreseen this?
Agreed. Bruno has shown his willingness to promote young talent and give them key roles in the top 6 over the past 2 seasons. I would've never suspected he would pull back on that after the playoffs are completely out of the question 🙃. A truly shocking turn of events.
