Confirmed Trade: [ANA/STL] Cam Fowler and 2027 4th round pick for 2027 2nd round pick and Jeremie Biakabutuka

He has been shit on and under appreciated by a fair amount of Ducks fans for a long time.

Meh, there's always fans like that during a bottoming out. He was what he was ... A good but not great D, and at one point the only capable blueliner on the roster, being asked to do more than he was capable of.

Both he and Gibson were in the same boat ... they signed long extensions just at the wrong time and got stuck on a sinking ship. No question though, both checked out at times.

Well what I’ve learned during this rebuild is a lot of our fans on this board seem to dislike like everyone at some point and it’s very negative. The amount of the hate I’ve seen thrown at some players that are 19-23 years old is crazy just no patience on our board. Fowler was just easy to point at because he wasn’t playing well, was forced to play over his head and we all knew he wouldn’t be around for when the ship turned around. Now that he’s gone I’m sure 99% of Ducks fans are happy to see him have success. I wanted him moved as well but never disliked him.

I wanted him moved like 5 years ago

Win win but Anaheim should’ve traded him when his value was way higher

Given his contract, the only time his value was higher was when he hadn't signed the extension, and the team was still good. Would have been an odd time to make that move, basically dismantling a playoff team and dealing one of their most popular guys.

Its only now that the deal is nearing the end, and the AAV more in line with his true value, that it made sense. Before this I suspect the Ducks would have had to include assets on a cap dump, take back a bad contract, or heavily retain to get much of anything, and that's assuming he would have approved a deal before now. It sounded like he had no particular desire to go until the young guys started to reduce his role.

Really happy for Cam. I was saying for years that he really just wasn't in a position to succeed. He always seemed like a quality dude and it's great to see that the change of scenery is working out for him.
He should have asked out after the team moved Lindholm and Manson, leaving him as the only veteran Dman left from their 2017 WCF run. They were in a full on massive rebuild at the time.

It'd be pretty crappy of a player to negotiate for a long extension, price yourself into difficult-to-move territory, get a NTC, then almost immediately ask out.

It was a few years into the deal. Lindholm/Manson moved at the 2022 TDL. That was year 4 of Cam's deal. Hockey POV, probably better for him to have moved earlier than this season. But, he didn't force it, which was his choice.

That still left 4+ years of term. No way the Ducks were gonna retain for that long.

Anyway the Ducks were showing cracks even when he first signed, I think their few good players wallpapered over their problems around 2018. Honestly they should have started a true rebuild in 2019. Instead they tried to retool and got stuck in the classic slow death spiral.

If you don't want the risk of being stuck somewhere, don't sign a long deal.

He was in a really tough spot with the ducks and I think it wore on him mentally. He always had elite skating and has a ton of experience. He is a perfect example of how a player can benefit from a change of scenery. Keep it up Cam!

Happy to see him doing well, it sucks but he just didn't fit on the roster at this point of the rebuild.
