Ducks actually need to reach the cap floor. Not taking stupid dumb ass long contracts due to youngsters getting theirs soon. This is a stop gap in salary and players.

The Ducks paid a 4th in 2026 to save $2m real dollars instead of claiming Schmidt on waivers, and he may not even want to go there as a UFA.
They can also flip him at the deadline.
Ducks have basically 3 second year Dman in Mint, Lacombe, and Zell next season. Dum would pair up with one of them as would Fowler/Gudas. He'd likely be asked to play the RHD side.
Surprisingly serviceable in a bottom pairing role after hearing so much negativity around his game from Pens fans.
I think it was a case of him playing too high up the lineup in Pittsburgh .Keep him on your 3rd pairing and you should be happy.
They can recoup that pick at the deadline easily even if Dumo is a shadow of his old self. In the meantime they add needed cap and get a vet defender to help all the young defensemen they have out.

This is the best move Ron Francis has made this offseason. Gets an asset for Dumoulin and allows Evans to be in the lineup full time.
