Seems weird to reboot after the way the last one ended. Are we just supposed to forget the ending or Madeline lol
Each Bond actor has their time. If they are having the actor sign a 3 or 4 film deal and they start at age 35 for example, that is a commitment to like age 44-46. Then he completes and they reboot with another actor. Can start off wherever they want. Fresh out of the training program or be into the 007 role for 2-3 years already.

But, I do agree, with the Madeline thing.

Part of the reason I really thought that ending (and the kid) was garbage is because it was always going to be balled up and thrown in the trash. Total capitulation to Craig who only wanted to come back if they did exactly what they did.

I really hate the push to put serious continuity onto James Bond. Just let him do his thing.

Craig's Bond was really the first time they did a reboot. There was some loose continuity from Connery to Dalton in the form of Bond's late wife being mentioned in For Your Eyes Only and License to Kill. Even when Goldeneye came out it really wasn't advertised as a "reboot."

I think that some continuity is important so that we can believe that the different incarnations are the same character. To me, Craig never felt like Bond because they largely dispensed with continuity and re-invented him... and for what, so they could put a decisive end to it in the last movie and then have to do another reboot. I don't like that for the franchise. I think that it should be an ongoing series with different actors in the lead, not a series of reboots, each with a new timeline. We've seen the trouble caused by that with the Star Trek reboot that created the Kelvin timeline. Each new Bond should exist in the same timeline or universe, not its own separate one, IMO.

The entire concert of "universe" is deeply uninteresting to me for Bond whether that's contained with one actor or attempts to stretch across several. Just tell me good, fun, globe trotting spy stories.

Series operated perfectly fine for 40 years and 20 movies without any major attempts at continuity.

True. And the Connery movies certainly have a clear order though it's not necessary to enjoy them.

Majesty's and Diamonds are sequential. And might be mildly confusing if you didn't see the earlier one. But after Diamonds' intro it's basically a stand-alone story.

But like you said, it's been pretty loose. They mention it when needed, ignore it when not. I'm ok with this.

Yes, and I also don't want any nonsense with Bond being sad because his mom didn't love him, or anything of the sort.

Bond doesn’t need a universe. But with Amazon taking over and broccoli out, probably was for the best the way Craig exited.

I think that you misunderstood me. What I meant by "universe" is how it was for 40 years. Before Craig, they didn't reboot the series with each new Bond actor. They even sprinkled in a little bit of continuity (like Bond's late wife and the same Q actor returning) to help reinforce that it was the same character from previous films. If you feel that the series operated perfectly fine when it did that and before it was rebooted, then we're in agreement.

I don’t think each new bond actor needs to start from coming out of mi6 training as was hinted in casino royale as M said she knew it was too soon to promote bond to 00 status.

I agree and even don't want that, because that's a reboot, IMO. I prefer that each Bond be a little seasoned as a 00 agent before we meet him. That way, if we want, we can imagine that the previous films took place earlier in his career.

I dig. 👍

But I have every belief they will try to make some unweildy interconnected thing.

I could see Amazon expand into other 00 agents. Like have a series around 008 for example to have a new character for an Amazon series. Most of the time whenever they did introduce another 00 in the movies, that other one died. Like in Golden Eye 006, but that had a twist.

I don't hate these picks, honestly. Heyman, in particular, has a really solid track record having handled Harry Potter while also having worked with the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Noah Baumbach and Alfonso Cuaron. That's experience with a major IP undertaking (and frankly one that I think is more difficult a job than Bond) and several distinct filmmakers. That the subject matter isn't the same isn't a real worry to me. I don't want to minimize the creative input of producers because that's certainly there, but they're also largely in charge of making sure everything is organized and running well. On that front, Heyman's got a hell of a resume.

Pascal is a more complex resume largely because of the very inconsistent Spider-Man history both as the lead exec at Sony and as a direct producer on several of the films. Some highs and some lows. But Little Women, Challengers and The Post are all on her resume. Like Heyman that's big IP experience and several notable creatives. Certain folks will harp on the 2016 Ghostbusters, but I still see more hits than misses on her background.

Also, while she wasn't in that executive producer role on the Craig Bonds, Sony was the distributor while she was head of the studio so I assume she has more familiarity with Bond than she may be getting credit for since her name isn't on the end product.

Sounds like Aaron Taylor-Johnson is out. Reports here in the UK says he wanted his wife to direct the movie and well they said no,

Theo James is now in the lead

I wasn't familiar with Theo James until I saw him in The Monkey last week. He was pretty good, but he gave me more of a James Franco vibe than a James Bond one. Maybe he could pull off 007, but I'd need to see more of him.

Also, he's 40. That's the same age that Henry Cavill was last year, when he was seemingly out of the running because of his age. Maybe they're getting desperate.

I liked James enough in the few things I've seen him in (Divergent, White Lotus season 2) but doesn't give me a Bond vibe

If this was a 1 and done then starting at 40 -41 would be fine. But, we are likely looking at a 3-4 film commitment which will span 8-10 years. So, I get the notion that they want someone sub 35 ideally.

00's per Casino Royale dialogue from James, says that 00's don't have a long life expectancy. Either they die in the field or they retire within a dozen or so years.
