Not necessarily, but you're talking about exceptions, and they're all guys that came from a different generation, except maybe Miller, who has had personal problems.

If a 1OA isn't special immediately, then yes, you're banking on the odds that he's a huge exception.
Or that he missed a good chunk of early development during Covid

I continue to think that if any of the kids have an argument that the Rangers screwed up their development, it's Filip Chytil.

How? He’s a late first rounder that’s become a top 6 forward. Injuries are what held him back throughout his career so far. If he can ever shake that bug (Mika did) he’ll change our trajectory and fit right into the next top PP unit with Fox & Laf. He should be playing there now. He’s scoring from everywhere

Well something is going on and it aint good. Might as well make that change and play Laf in his natural position to see if that gets him going.

A large percentage of that is 5v5. He was not getting an real PP time until just recently. He is capable of more but we need to start putting our #1OA (who we recently extended to finish the decade) in better positions to succeed.
Switch wings...Panarin and Laf...both are currently playing their off sides .

Jack Hughes also wasn't "special right away"
Yes, he was. Everybody wants to look at points and how he was easily to knock off the puck because he didn't attack the right areas. But he was still pretty special right out the gate. His skating alone made him make players look silly. His zone enters and exits were top notch. He just was't elite at taking games over, yet.

We really nailed it when it came to the opposite of skating ability.

He consistently earned more ice time and better linemates than he actually received. He has succeeded in spite of that.

If you ask me who I'd pick for my team between Chytil - when he's not injured - and Laf, I'd take Chytil. Although I think Laf has been irrevocably contaminated by Panarin. He can do things required in the NHL game at full speed, which is way more important than fancy skill plays being done at half-speed or outside the dots.

Out of all the Lafreniere excuses, "he's been hurt by Panarin" has to be the worst.

He couldn't crack .5 PPG before playing with Panarin.

Panarin made that kid 52 million dollars.

eh

he's consistently earned more icetime and then immediately gotten injured and spent significant time on IR and then been realllllllly slow coming back and being productive. It's been repeated over and over in his career and it happened again this year. If Chytil could have stayed healthy I think he'd have ultimately been given more responsibility, but he cannot.
