Alvin on Pettersson: He needs to mature and understand that there are certain expectations.. need to face the music when things don't go well

Red Wings get: F Elias Pettersson

Sabers get: F Marco Kasper, LHD Albert Johansson, F Vladimir Tarasenko, Red Wings 1st round pick.

Canucks get: F Dylan Cozens and G Cam Talbot.

C'mon let's get a three-banger trade going!
That is such a bad trade for the Canucks.

I guess the Sabers will feel good if it's Detroit's 2025 #1 and Kasper is use full but Johansson is a nothing burger and Tarasenko basically is deadline trade bait for maybe a second rounder.

Here is the full quote of what I want to discuss without title character limitations:

I want to discuss this quote outside of any trade speculation. What the hell is any NHL GM doing saying comments like this to the media, nevermind a player you just had commit 8 years to your organization and you decided to make a top 5 paid player? NEVERMIND a CANADIAN market GM?

What the hell could possibly be the goal here with saying this aside from adding fuel to a speculative tire fire in the room. What I want to know is, did Alvin just help create a Drury situation? I can't see that quote being popular with players even if they have problems with him. And I imagine if he is now forced to make a trade with him for poor value that will be seen even worse.

It really leads credence to what has been said about EP40 for the last few years and especially in the playoffs last year. Im surprised a GM said it so bluntly and openly in the media. They must be so fed up with him and feel ripped off with the contract they gave him.

Ss y ou asking about the goal, im guessing they are just fed up and tired of him and have tried everything else and trying to motivate him through the media, which will likely backfire but what else can they do, its not like any of this is a secret or can hurt his trade value. These rumours of his unhappiness, lack of motivation and whining have followed him for years.

EP40 is the guy you move though. At least Miller tries everynight.

Here
Because the GM is potentially alienating his most expensive player while diminishing the value of the asset. Both run counter to the job description of a GM.
Your point does hold ground.

Mine would be; just how bad is it with EP around the whole team and management for a GM to say these things? Alvin is not an idiot, he does know that he’s doing damage to the player’s value. My guess would be that it’s already too late to redeem EP with the team and reputation wise.

i think he just means the canadian market will jump on this and not let it go. Whereas in say Anahiem or nashville it likely doesn't make waves.

Exactly this. Esp markets like Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal they are the worst places in the sport to make these comments unless the goal is to have 15 podcasts beat it to death and make your players answer about it literally forever (even in retirement they will be asked)

He’s trying to motivate his player through the media. Clearly whatever has been said behind closed doors hasn’t worked. Now it’s not just Allvin on his ass to do better, it’s the whole hockey world.

Not coincidentally, Jim Rutherford is one of those old school hockey guys who had used this technique for decades.

this is the correct assessment

I would say Rick Tocchet and Alvin have talked about this at length an Alvin is regurgitating what Tocchet has been saying. So Alvin is using this as a last resort... one more crack before he knows he has to bite the bullet and move this guy even if it is not great value.

I saw Cozens and Byram as a potential return and I would be all over that if I could extend Byram.

NMC is active July 1. EP40 traded after the season and just before his NMC kicks in?
Hard to move in-season, otherwise he'd have a month to respond on the ice.

But it doesn't exactly help his value. If their plan is to trade him, why advertise that he's a pouty malcontent that can't handle pressure and doesn't work hard.
Fake praise isn't going to help. Everyone can see the dip in play.

100% besides the smoke and fire have been hanging around for so long and confirmed, EP40s value likely has no where to bottom out and can only up. I imagine Alvin has called around and listened to quite a few offers and wasn't liking what he was hearing. They are beyond fed up with him and with his contract and level of play since signing it i bet its impossible to get value that Alvin will be happy with. This is a last resort " get your shit together" plea that has probably been made 100 times behind closed doors and Vancouver is just done with it now. Time for petey to pull himself up after getting humiliated by the GM in public, sink or swim as it were. Does he have the pride to rise above? or will he sink and drown? either or the on ice product can't get much worse.
