I like to present a certain era for the wrestler that I was going for or envisioning in my plans. It's not meant to be taken as exactly that specific version of a person, more so an idea of what I was going for.

Three years ago I drafted Foley and specified his shirt, tie and jogging pants in the story. Hoping it would nudge people into thinking of main event Mankind. That sort of thing.

I generally appreciate when people make it clear what version of a given wrestler they are using. It can work to their disadvantage if they make a bad choice though. I mainly dislike when it's lazily done and you have two heels or something with no reason given for the match.

I can't see a picture, all I know is in the 80s Mid South did a gimmick of JYD being suspended from wrestling and coming back under a mask as Stagger Lee.

Stagger Lee has been played by more than JYD. I believe les Habs is using the Koko Ware version.
