How transferrable are defensive metrics from team to team, system to system?

Vilardi for instance had great defensive metrics with LA but the info I saw had him below average on the Jets

I didn't really see top defensive forward (top relative to what /whom) from Iafallo last year tbh.

His defensive metrics here and in LA suggest he is a top defensive forward. He seemed to help most lines he was on.

I see the value in having him replaced for his salary but that would likely require moving out picks with him, as you said.

At this time of year the waived players probably all clear. I am a little torn with waiving Lundmark though. He just might get claimed. OTOH, maybe getting him through waivers now creates some flexibility to bring him back later. For that matter, maybe they keep him up until Ville/Stan return. They could then send him down without having to go through waivers again, if the timing works.

Don't know why AJF and Toninato are waived before Kupari.

About as chalk as the forward lines could be. Zero changes. Zero surprises.

Scheifele line...
Lowry shutdown line...
Untrusted "scoring" line...
4th line for leftovers...
Sure generates excitement for the fanbase, doesn't it? I know it isn't the coach or GMs job to sell tickets, but if I am a fan on the fence for attending games (not describing myself...I will go regardless), a chance to see some young prospects might move the needle. I can't imagine a less inspiring sales pitch than "same team that wilted in the playoffs, but maybe slightly worse!".

We just came off a season with 110 points. I don't think they need to do much to the lineup. If it doesn't go right its far easier to bring in your younger guys then.

The reason they have trouble selling tickets is a much more far reaching problem for society in general then they need an "exciting" team for people to come out too and watch.

Vilardi racked up some bad metrics when he was on the same line as Scheifele and Connor last season at 5v5.

In 197 minutes together, Vilardi was 70.67 CA/60, 3.94 GA/60, 3.60 xGA/60.
In 154 minutes without, Vilardi was 57.12 CA/60, 1.17 GA/60, 2.01 xGA/60.

There's just no one on CSV who can push play the other way enough to overcome their shortcomings.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Ehlers with KC/Scheif get it to positive numbers?

Last season the Jets were at their best and moved way up the standings without that top line, and they struggled when they put Connor and Scheifele back together.

I'm okay seeing how they start with that top line but I can't help thinking they are leaving some value on the table by not augmenting Lowry's line with more scoring on RW. We got a glimpse of Nino's scoring last night with Ehlers and then Vilardi setting him up for goals. If Scheifele's line struggles defensively in the first 15-20 games, Arniel needs to have the fortitude to break them up.

At least the PP looks like it will score more this season. Without Dillon in think they'll need more offense to offset a likely dip in defensive performance.

Couldn't agree more with all of this.

As I said this org has a template and they haven't moved off it in over half a decade no matter who the coach is.

Well, if it ain’t broke, don’t —— erm…

I can imagine Chipman lying in bed with his collection of Stan Fischler Stars of the 70s Hockey Almanacs and whispering to himself “Yes sirree, those were the golden years… If I only had 3 more Lowrys…”

Scheif line, often scores, doesn’t defend

Lowry shutdown, might score but only in streaks

Afterthought line of guys not handpicked by Scheif, might score in reduced minutes, highly benchable

Awkward collection of leftovers, will hustle, might defend, unlikely to score

But this year, this year, it will be different.

Fans tend to want to see the “young prospects” until they actually have seen them. Then, maybe not so much.

Wonder if Ehlers can put it all together. I've been hoping since 2015 that he could be a star player. He's had 29 goals and 28 goals but never more than 30. The jets need more from him. But he's also 28 and statistically unlikely to get better.

Jets center depth isn't great. Maybe they will keep the puck out of their net in the playoffs this year? It's not a lineup that screams deep playoff run, but at the same time they were 4th overall in the league last year. I'm in a weird purgatory with my feelings about the team.

line-up nearly the same as last year? gee who would've thunk that?

bu bu but chevy and arniel said young guys in the line up! wont somebody think about the prospects!!! 😭

seriously though, if this is the line-up, extremely unsurprising. the fwd group is the same cast of characters to start last year. 0 trades occurred, 0 FAs left. non-generational prospects are unlikely to start the season on the Jets w/o clear openings. but some on HF were so confident in some vaunted prospect or youth movement.... was never going to happen imo.

top-4d pretty easy to predict. 3rd pair-i didn't think miller would sign here w/o a starting at 3rd pair D rather than the pressbox. so really, 3LD was probably the only realistic skater position open bw heinola, stanley etc.

Hopefully Lundmark makes it through. Whether or not he can some day fill in as a 3rd pair guy, it would be good just to have the depth in case of injuries, and also to help with the Moose.
3 months ago, who would have thought we'd be talking about Landmark possibly being claimed. I'd say 60/40 he clears, but at the same time he'd be a good pickup 😬

I think people are thinking that chevy meant chibs, Lambert and salomonsson when he said "young guys"

In my mind, he could have been referring to Ville and Kupari (who are both relatively young)

I don't think Lambert showed enough to stick. Chibs definitely not. I think Salo might start the season ahead of fleury and coghlan.

I'm really hoping Lundmark clears. He had himself a very uneventful camp and that's not an insult for a defenseman like him.
