I haven't watched an all star game in at least 25 years and I don't think I'm ever going to give it another chance. Just seeing the odd highlight clip is enough to turn me off. It's junk as far as I'm concerned. If that is what hockey really became I wouldn't be a fan anymore.

I had the same aversion to the event until they switch to the new format. I would recommend you to give it a chance - the elimination format provided enough competitiveness to the event and you already know how entertaining 3 on 3 could be with best of the best playing.

I don't care for the 3 v 3 to begin with. I'm not into the promotional and marketing feel goody shit either. Hockey doesn't work for me if the players really aren't going after each other and if there isn't at least some ill intent. The competitive nature of the sport matters a lot to me. The grinding, hitting, getting under player's skins, the intensity is as important to me as goals scored or saves made and once the NHL starts taking out some of these elements or lessens some to heighten others I lose interest and to me the all star game is and has been bullshit for a long while.

I watched the John Scott one after several years of refraining.

I actually liked it, yet I do not have similar hopes for the upcoming one.

I believe they should allow the players to anonymously vote for who their team sends as those players would first know if that player wanted to go or was fighting an injury or just did not want to go, and the players would probably pick more likeable characters and it would add more flavor to the game/skill competition.

I kinda like this idea, although I have no idea if people would watch because I think a lot of players would be guys who aren't stars.

That being said, I don't watch the ASG ever. In fact, I hate that week because it's so boring, but I would actually watch the game if they did something like this.
