I'm really excited for opening day, I think we are a solid/all star goaltender and a number 1 center away from really being great. We have the wingers, we have the depth on offense and ability to score by committee, I believe in Phaneuf as a number one being supported by Reilly, Gardiner, Gunnarsson and some sandpaper in the bottom pairing, and with guys like McClement being potential shut down guys, this team is headed in the right direction, not a huge fan of tanking as you must try to be competitive, but imagine what a great draft and free agency this year can do for the team's chances next year?

I imagine the impact a Luongo trade + Ryan Getzlaf signing would have and it's amazing. then I wake up

Was Mark Fraser at training camp by the way?
I saw him at a Marlies game, he was very good defensively, big, confident, and beat the **** out of a Hamilton Bull dog!
Id love to see him with the Leafs

Nice to see the buds back on the ice. Rielly was paired up with Phaneuf apparently. I wonder if we'll see that during the season.

Carlyle on Kadri: "He's proven he has NHL skills... He's been one of our strongest players at camp... We'd be crazy not to recognize that."

Kadri is a lock.

Does anyone know how Kostka is doing? Think we'll see him play a few games? Also does he have to pass through waivers to be sent down? Could definitely see someone picking him up if so.

I think he's been playing well in training camp. Carlyle put him on top pairing with Phaneuf.

Heard JvR practiced today. Any idea how he looked/who he was playing with?

He practiced with Kadri and Komarov today.

Not sure how he looked.

No scrimmage today. Likely one tomorrow though, with what's likely to be official lines.

Liles and Franson were a pair today. That's a matchup that might work pretty well. Both of these guys showed flashes last season. Liles was great in the defensive end before his injury, and Franson is just huge. Both can move the puck.

Can't wait for the season to start.

Sorry if its been mentioned already, but does Frattin need to clear waivers if he's sent down? Thanks

Now this article is actually a few years old but I don't think waiver eligibility rules have changed since then. If they have, I haven't been able to find any information on it.

Depending on the age as determined above, a player is waiver eligible for a certain number of years from the year in which he signed his first contract, as shown below.

Goalies Skaters
Age Years Age Years
18 6* 18 5*
19 5* 19 4*
20 4 20 3
21 4 21 3
22 4 22 3
23 3 23 3
24 2 24 2
25+ 1 25+ 1

For anyone 20 or older, the year in which they play their first professional game is considered the first year counting towards the number of years they are exempt from waivers.

*If an 18 or 19 year old plays in 11 or more NHL games in a season, then the eligible period drops to 4 years for a goalie and 3 years for a skater, with the first year of that period being the year in which the player played 11 or more games.

(Example: Nazem Kadri & John Tavares both signed their first NHL contract as 18 year olds. However, Tavares has played more than 11 games as an 18 year-old. Therefore, Tavares is now waiver-exempt for 4 years (this year, and the 3 ensuing years), while Kadri is waiver-exempt for 6 (this year and the 5 ensuing, although this could change if he plays next season).

The other factor is games played. Once a player reaches the threshold (again based on the age at which they signed their first professional contract), they are eligible for waivers. The language of the CBA is very clear that while there are two distinct thresholds, this is an "earliest of" scenario. If a player reaches their games played mark before the reach the years mark (or vice versa), they become eligible for waivers.

Goalies Skaters
Age Games Age Games
18 80 18 160
19 80 19 160
20 80 20 160
21 60 21 80
22 60 22 70
23 60 23 60
24 60 24 60
25+ 25+

Professional Games is typically defined as all NHL regular season and playoff games. However, for players older than 20 years of age, the definition expands to include AHL regular season and playoff games, as well as any other professional game played in Europe while the player is under contract to an NHL team but on loan to a European club. A 25 year old or older basically gets his first year waiver eligible and that's it.

So according to these requirements, he was 20+ years old when his contract was signed, and he's played a total of 100 pro games (AHL & NHL combined) he would indeed have to pass through waivers. HOWEVER, what I'm not certain on is if these rules still apply BEFORE the season starts. Maybe someone can confirm this for me. (JE :) )Cheers.

Since it's asked again and again, here's the definition of 1-way and 2-way contracts (has no bearing on waivers!)

If a player on a one-way contract goes to the AHL, they receive the same compensation that they would if they played in the NHL (with the obvious exception of any bonuses that would be likely calculated based on the performance in the NHL, as stipulated in the contract.)

Conversely, a 2-way contract stipulates that the player receives compensation at $X if they play in the NHL, and $Y if they play in the AHL. The minimum salary in the AHL is signficantly lower than that of the NHL. In some cases, it's not uncommon for the players' AHL salary to be 10% of their NHL salary.

The lockout has robbed Carlyle of valuable time to work with his team.

But the new regime is working hard to make changes.

Slogans such as "Mental Durability," "Make Today Count" and "Burn the Boats" adorn the Leafs dressing room at their practice facility.

Carlyle declined to detail the story behind "Burn the Boats," saying some things should remain in the dressing room.

"We believe that there are some things that we can always refer back to," Carlyle said. "And when you start trying to build a culture, we're not any different than anybody else, there are power of positive thinking (tools), there are things that you try to do to bring the group back when adversity strikes."

But goalie James Reimer spilled the beans in an interview with TSN radio.

"He (Carlyle) had a story about people crossing the sea to take the treasure," said Reimer. "When they got there, they burned their boats so they either had to take their treasure or die. That's what 'Burn the Boats' means."

Our roster would be a joke if Wilson was still coaching. Kadri would be sent down already.

Listening to the guys on TSN you'd think that Wilson is still around. They seem to think that Carlyle is going to run with Kostka in our top 6

Carlyle likes a big, defensively responsible group and that really doesn't fit the bill. I could see Rielly starting though and playing his 5 games.

Our defense will start as:

Rielly-Phaneuf
Gunnarsson-Holzer
Liles-Franson
Fraser-Komisarek

And when Gardiner comes back, Rielly will return to Moose Jaw and our lineup will be:

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Holzer
Liles-Franson
Fraser-Komisarek

So have the final cuts been made then?

Holzer and Fraser made it on D? I'm wondering what the D will look like, got lost in the whole Connolly/Lombo thing over the last day
