It would be if the Rangers weren't in our division. I see the Canes getting one of Crawford, Lehner, or Maelstrom.

Seems like he'd suck all the pucks in rather than keep them out.

I don’t think they go out and get a goalie, honestly, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they did. Seems much more probable that they grab a D, like Martinez, who can play next to Pesce or solidify the 3rd pairing.

On a side note, it’s really too bad that TVR has been so ineffective this year. Before his injury in the series against the Isles, he was one of the premier 3rd pairing guys in the league. Now, he’s routinely scratched and when he plays, he just hasn’t been good enough. In theory, TVR-Edmundson should be a rock solid pair, but also in theory/on paper, the Gardiner-Pesce paint should be one of the best in the league. At least they’re finally giving one of the “ideal” pairings a shot at even strength.

Martinez is kind of bad and coming off an injury.

Yeah, as much as I want them to bring in a different goalie, I don't see it actually happening.

What's needed is tighter play in the D zone and more effective zone exits. I think if they are able to correct that loosey-goosey coverage and be stronger getting pucks out when they have the chance, a lot of the recent lackluster play in net will fix itself. However, you just can't have Reimer giving up goals like the first one he gave up against the Flyers, so we'll see.

I'll admit I haven't really kept up with him stats-wise/injury-wise so far this year. He looks to be playing 20mins a night on a bad LA team and is a -3, so that's not too bad just looking at his line so far this year.

Martinez doesn't have to be the exact target, he's just the type of D that comes to mind and is advertised to be available that I feel they're looking for. Playoff-tested, D-first, can skate and has term on their deal, not a rental...

1. While I am not quite as impatient as ChuckW, I do think the Cup is the goal for the current core. Recent history indicates that homegrown goalies win much more frequently.

2. If the Canes are in the market for a d-man, it is time to use picks/prospects to sweeten Gardiner and get Vatanen.

I don't see them paying picks to be rid of Gardiner. Dealing from weakness seems to be completely against all they've done so far, but I guess this is the year to do something like that with the trove of picks they have.

I actually expect them to keep all their picks in the top 100 of this draft. I think if they deal in futures, it'll be prospects on the cusp like Gauthier or Bean that end up being traded.

No one wants Gardiner. We gave him a contract no one else wanted to give, that's why he's here. They've all seen him so there's no way anyone wants him more than they did before. Gonna take one hell of a sweetener to get a better player than Jake. Best we could do today is pay so one to take him away or take someone else's problem. Maybe he gets better and that changes.

Agree, IF he gets dealt, it would happen this off-season in a dollar for dollar type deal with no sweeteners, similar to the Neal for Lucic deal. That's still unlikely to happen though in my view. Gardiner is probably a Cane at least into the start of next season. By then he's either turned it around (hopefully) or they have to suck it up and pay a team to take him.

Getting rid of Gardiner at this particular time is the definition of a panic move that certain fans would conjure up because they're freaked out about +/-. There's a lot of evidence to show that his 1st half as an aberration and mostly the result of terrible goaltending behind him relative to the rest of the team. There's a reason, IMO, why they're giving him more minutes this month, not less.

You could probably make an argument that one of the contributing reasons to his bad play according to the eye test, is his usage. He's been a top 4 guy his whole career, and with the switch to CAR, he's a 3rd pairing guy getting less than 15mins a night most games. That's a pretty big adjustment to make. Extra ice-time may be just what he needs to get acclimated. Also, he's had a carousel of partners, so there's really been no consistency/time to build chemistry.

On the flip-side, sometimes he makes a play that is the polar opposite to the play he should be making. That just seems to be his style of play though. You can live with the gaffes with a strong partner to cover up for them (Pesce) and with consistent offensive contributions.

I like the move to get him up to the 2nd pairing at even-strength. He's played more than 17mins a night since being elevated and he's got what, 1g, 2a in the 5 games or so since? His best chance of contributing is most definitely next to Pesce. Now you just have to hope the good outweighs the bad in his play.

The smart move, to me, would be to sell high on Edmundson and bet that TVR rebounds from his lackluster 1st half with more minutes. One option is Dallas, as I've already mentioned, but another is Florida, who have a glut of RHD and need some balance of their pairings.

Florida is hot on our heels for a WC spot. I wouldn't give them shit.

Gardiner is not as bad as his traditional stats say, as some of his fancy stats indicate. But the eye test doesn't lie here either, he's got some definite skating issues that probably will get even worse with time. It's going to be interesting to see how both the player and the team deal with it.

It seems to me, in the last couple of games his skating feels like its a bit better, even speedwise. I'm inclined to be in that group to let this play itself out....plus I it's always good to have a scapegoat factor.....

Slavin - Hamilton
Gardiner - Pesce
Edmunson - Fluery

no reason to panic move.

TVR, Fluery, and Edmunson could be dangled for an upgrade.

I would look at moving, Nino or McGinn in a package with one of them.

Some Rangers fans think Gauthier and a pick for Georgiev would work.
