Svech - Aho - TT
Dzingle - Trocheck - Kap
Foegele - Staal - Nino
Marty - Geeks - McGinn

Slavin - Hamilton
Gardiner - Pesce
Fluery - Vats

Mrazek
Reimer

That seems good.
You’re missing Necas, and we have to hope Jake finds his game overall. I could see Jake and Fluery flip flopping and Necas staying in the top six - Kapanen would maybe initially be the Williams replacement if he retires with Staal who moves up as needed. Maybe he even plays on the first line with the cherubs, and Svech plays with Trochek and Necas. Options are nice.

Not sure where I’d put Nino or Dzingle.

I like that, though I agree that Foegele maybe makes it over Nino if we’re wishing. Foegele is a spaz but he works his tail off and he’s home grown. Hard not to love him. Reality is Dzingle is probably the odd man out since he hasn’t fit in with the coach and only has one year left? I forgot if he was two or three years. He’s closer to his past success than Nino, and cheaper so probably easier to move. We’ve got a couple of righties in the mix now so that third line doesn’t NEED a righty. Though I like the balance. I think only high skill guys like Svech or TT should intentionally play off wing if you’re going to do it at all. That’s old school though.

So Foegele over Dzingle and we’re probably close with this fantasy world where we have Kapanen. I think us getting Kapanen would likely cost something like Bean and a solid add. Or maybe a Foegele with a bigger add. I could actually see Bean and Foegele and maybe they add something small. I’d like to see a line with Foegele on the left and Kaps on the right. That would be holy hell on a forecheck. They might even be able to compensate for Staal being the black hole he is offensively.

It would take a long and hard contemplation to decide on moving Pesce for Nylander. I dont think Nylander is a Rod type player and hasnt had to be.

A guy like Meier or Cirelli would be worth considering.

Side note: I would see if we could convince NJ or taking Skjei for Palmieri (sweeteners added as needed)

I went and checked out Nino's HockeyDB page just to kinda see his career trends and... yowza look at his 19-year-old (and final) season for NYI.

Is that possibly the worst season in NHL history? I get he's 19 and the Isles were bad but... oof.

I've mentioned a Cirelli/Cernak/Pesce idea in the past. I'd love that type of deal, actually, perhaps the only deal where I would be OK with dealing Pesce.

There's a lot of moving pieces to open up the possibility of re-signing Vatanen. There are already 7 NHL caliber defensemen not counting the UFAs, so at least one expensive defenseman would have to move out, and possibly one of Fleury or Bean as well.

Slavin-Hamilton
Skjei-Pesce
Fleury-Gardiner
Bean

With the cap guaranteed flat next year and the expansion draft, a 1 year bridge deal is possible, but how confident is Vatanen the cap will go up next season? That will depend on the number of games with fans in 20-21, right?

I don't see a longer-term deal for Vatanen when Hamilton still needs to be signed. I don't want to sign Vatanen and end up unable to afford Hamilton.

The good news for trying to squeeze in Vatanen is that a flat cap makes Fleury and Bean more valuable to opposing teams up against the cap, but do those deals involve salary coming back? I don't see the Canes doing that unless it's a goalie and they try to move Reimer.

All things considered, even if he likes the style of play there are things Carolina just cannot offer Vatanen that I think will result in him going elsewhere:
1) Top pairing minutes. Even if he gets PP1 over Hamilton, he's not taking top pairing over Hamilton.
2) Big payday. Vatanen is now 29. This year or next is his shot at a payday, and unless he gets zero big offers this off-season I think he's taking the big contract when he gets a shot. He will be looking for a raise above the $4.875M deal he signed 4 years ago.

You could do a Pesce for Nylander trade back in late 2018 because you had Hamilton signed for that season and the 2 following, you had Faulk signed for that season and the next and lastly, you were 99.9% sure you’d get Adam Fox signed. The team also at that time needed a scoring forward in the worst way.

Fast forward to now, Hamilton is injured and only has 1 yr to UFA, Faulk was shown the door and Fox only wanted to take his talents to NY. Pesce with 4 more years on his deal is the only long term stability they have on the right side at the moment, can’t trade that.

I’m on record as being a bit concerned with how they’ll handle the upcoming Hamilton extension negotiations. Enter Vatanen. He has, so far, been an adequate fill-in for Hamilton. It should be interesting to see how they approach Hamilton this off-season while still being able to negotiate exclusively with Vatanen for a few weeks prior to the UFA period. Leveraging Vatanen as a replacement for Hamilton in talks could get contentious.

Also, I think they are in a unique position to potentially keep Vatanen for one more year. The money he’ll likely ask for won’t really work cap-wise in the long term, but if he really likes it in CAR, perhaps he takes a 1yr deal due to bet on himself cashing in under what should be more normal circumstances the following offseason.

I mean, damn. Survive next round and come back with
Slavin-Hamilton
Gardiner-Pesce
Skjei-Vatanen

And Fleury, Eddy, TVR, and Bean in case of injury??

That's just ridiculous depth for the playoffs.

I believe the next round is the 1st round, so we need to survive the next two rounds before Pesce is back.

Technically we are going into round 1 now, not sure if that is what he meant but, I assume so since he said September for Pesce. Round 3 is ECF. Also, Rod cant help himself with Edmundson. We would probably see Eddy over Gardiner or Skjei

and Minjaben beat me to it

Who are you guys kidding? We are going to trade for the next Hamilton that's still on a great contract and undervalued for liking museums or video games or something and move Hamilton to replace the pieces used to get that player.

I think that with this front office and how they've performed so far, they should be given the benefit of the doubt on whatever moves that they decide to do.

I didn't say that as a negative. I've been among the biggest defenders of this management and ownership and don't second guess a ton. This goes back to a lot of unpopular decisions.

His development was incredibly mismanaged by the isles. It’s a wonder he even became a regular.

He was playing next to no minutes on their fourth line with the likes of a Trevor Gillies. Remember him from the canes’ dark days?

No, thank god.

Had to go back and check and I see he never actually did get into a game for us. I guess I just remember him being in the system.

That only makes the isles look worse, though. Here’s a goon who wasn’t a good enough hockey player to get into some godawful canes lineups and they decide that not only should he play for them - he should get to play with their recent 5th overall pick.

Maybe Vatanen would be willing to take a team friendly contract due to his injuries this past season+ corona’s effects on cap

I have a nagging suspicion that the next player that the Canes will target after the postseason is Jake Virtanen. He's been inexplicably benched for the likes of Jay Beagle and Brandon Sutter in Vancouver after having a very solid season, the Canucks are going to need to clear long-term cap for Pettersson and Hughes, and Jim Benning has a history of not-so-great asset management. Add a Finnish last name (he's a Canadian with Finnish ancestry), and it seems like a match made in heaven.
