Rublev is going to be haunted by that first set. I think he was up a break early on but was broken back, then up 2 mini breaks in the tiebreak and loses it.

Andrey's Blues

Serves for a surprisingly easy set against Medvedev and is broken;
Gains two set points on Medvedev's subsequent service game and Daniil hits two winners;
Goes up 6-2 in the breaker and blows it, losing seven set points in all;
All this despite having an extremely rare (for anybody) 6-1 advantage over Daniil in points that go 9 shots and over.

Poor guy.

To his credit, Rublev hangs tough and takes the second set behind two breaks, 6-3.

I'm a big fan of Daniil but I would really like to see Rublev win this match, 4-3 on serve.

On the fifth match point of the deciding breaker, having won points that went 33, 38, and 40 strokes and after blowing a 6-3 lead, Andrey finishes Medvedev off after a monumental rally. What a great win for Rublev.

With Nole's fairley routine two set win over Tsitsipas combined with Rafa's first match loss yesterday to Fritz, Alcaraz is assured of being #1 for 2022. Quite the accomplishment for the teenager.

With Uncle Tony in his corner, Felix is off to a great start against Rafa who is watching an awful lot of winners sail by, 6-3.

FAA's first serve has become such a potent weapon, even against a returner of the prowess of Nadal who converted none of his five break point opportunities.

Felix had such an iffy first game but he won. Rafa has to write off the last 6 months and get healthy and fit.

Rafa really gifted the first set to Felix when Nadal was up 40- love on serve in the eighth game and completely screwed up the rest of the way. So uncharacteristic.

Reports: Djokovic to get visa to play Aussie Open

Novak must be in good spirits today as he's slated to return to his most successful major next year.

My quick thoughts are that (1) The 2023 Australian Open just got a lot more interesting, and (2) with Nadal likely no longer a threat to win outside of clay the chase for his all-time grand slam record is definitely still on.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the first half of the year. He won't have a lot of points to defend but he will also be seeded lower. Throw in a much older Rafa and the young guys who are breaking through and it's going to be exciting.

Rublev giving his all, but Nole, up a set and a break, is setting an insanely high standard of near flawless tennis and there isn't much Andrey can do about it.

Felix loses a tough, serve dominant three setter to Fritz, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. Midway through the third set the first break point of the match that Felix gave up was enough to beat him.

Felix takes sooooooo looooong on his serve, like Rafa. I ended up PVRing the match because of work and was happy I did because I could fast forward before he served.

Djokovic over Medvedev 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

In a totally "meaningless" match, one that had no effect on the eventual semi-finals whatsoever, Nole and Daniil played like they were meeting at Wimbledon. A real testimony to both players, but especially Novak, who needed an over three hour match about as much as he needed a hole in his head. Still, he kept fighting back over and over again, refusing to let the match go, to the point of exhaustion, even when Daniil served for the match at 5-4 in the third. One of the most entertaining three set matches of the year.

Rublev comes from behind to beat Tsitsipas in three sets. Gotta feel happy for Andrey as he wasn't seen as a contender to get to the final weekend here, but he played his heart out against both Medvedev and Stefanos and this is the result.

Match in and match out, this has been an insanely first serve dominant court. Fritz definitely has more than a punter's chance against Nole despite a lifetime 0-5 record.

1st set: Despite 20 unforced errors, Fritz limps into a tie breaker which a less than scintillating Djokovic manages to take 7-5. Nole looks a little weary and who could blame him. He definitely doesn't want to allow this to go three sets.

2nd set: Fritz breaks in the first game, serves for the set at 5-4, but plays passively and is broken. Nole, as though foreordained, takes the subsequent breaker 8-6.

Ruud over Rublev 2 and 4. Caspar could do nothing wrong and Andrey could do nothing right.

Ruud is 0-6 against the Big Three, having never taken a set from any of them. He is 0-14 in that regard.

I think Ruud's only hope today is to extend rallies as long as possible, ala Medvedev, try to make Nole not want to grind, tire him out as he has had an arduous week. Otherwise history is likely to repeat itself.

1st set: Ruud played as well as he has ever played against a Big Three but one tiny mistake in the twelfth game undid all his good works. In an instant, the set was over.

2nd set: Caspar has a little letdown, Nole breaks early, turn out the lights.

Ruud now 0-7 lifetime against the Big Three, 0-16 in sets.

Strong statement of intent to return to the top from Nole this week, along with a nice $4.74 million payday today.
