So much for Felix and the soft draw. Ramos-Vinolas makes quick work of him 4 and 2. In fairness, Albert played very well.

Murray beats Alcaraz in three sets, wearing the youngster down in the third after an absolutely scintillating two sets. Alcaraz played some spectacular tennis, but Andy is slowly becoming a force again.

.....and she wins it. She's sure got some modus operandi.

And it wasn't like pavelychenkova gave it to her either. She was coming on towards the end of that set, but fernandez was up for it.

I guess the trick is that she just needs to keep playing higher seeds or something. Next up is a lower seed though in Rogers.

That win by Leylah was amazing. Didn’t play her best but just grinded it out and found a way, against another higher seed at that. So entertaining to watch, always a fighter

Bianca came out like a house on fire, breaking early for 2-0 but is now down a break 3-5. The wind is pretty strong

She drops the first in a breaker.

And loses in straights. Something is going on with her emotionally. She doesn't have the spark and drive we saw two years ago.

Rublev has to be the worst player in the top 10 actually playing right now. Great power but no brain and is so susceptible to getting upset by players he should have no business losing to. Currently down a set to Tommy Paul, who is playing well, but he can’t keep losing to these types of guys if he wants to be in the mix…I was hopeful he could get to level of Zverev/Tsitsipas but I’m becoming increasingly skeptical

She doesn't have the same power she did two years ago. It's not diminished greatly, but enough to take her back to the field. I mean, Kontaveit in her win over Bianca was outgunning her on key points, and while Anett is hitting the ball harder these days, she is by no means a power hitter in Bianca's (previous) league.

I think the serious knee injury has taken a toll. That, and who knows what aftereffects Covid could be having on her. The bottom line is that right now she is no longer the player she once was.

I don't think the brain is the problem. I think it is more a lack of variety in his game. I think players now "know" his game and have found ways to blunt the aggression or turn it to there advantage. He could use among other things: greater service variety and a better second serve; a slice backhand that he can really depend on; better executed drop shots and short game in general; a vastly improved net game; more concentration on angles and changing the pace--I mean a lot of fundamental things. His basic tool kit has taken him to top five heights; that's pretty damned impressive. But he needs to add to it significantly if he is going to take the next step into the ultra-elite class.

Pegula is a tough out. She clobbered Svitolina 1 and 1, displaying power, defensive skill, and an ability to exploit her opponent's court position. Impressive stuff.

I knew he was going to lose, I had seen him badly from the start of the tournament. Too bad there will be no derby with Sinner, who will most likely eat Fritz alive.

Fernandez is about to get bageled in the 2nd set. Rogers has been looping balls back to Fernandez and forcing Leylah to generate her own power, which she has struggled to in the entire set. Will be interesting to see how Leylah adjusts her game in the 3rd.

Edit: No bagel, as Rogers completely went away from soft stuff and tried to overpower Fernandez in that last service game.

Ugh, I thought this match was starting at 6 and just got home 3 games ago. Rogers is looking tired.

This is insanely good tennis!

Rogers wins in a breaker. Leylah needs to work more on her serve

Disappointing loss for Leylah but a great effort and match. Gotta give credit to Rogers, she played great. Leylah’s first serve is definitely an area of improvement, she’s never going to be able to blow opponents away with her serve but if she can get the % up it’s strong enough that it’s passable with the other areas of her game being so rock solid. The 1/11 on break points in the 3rd set was the real killer. Every time she loses you just get the feeling she’ll come back stronger, very bright future

Edit; Turns out her first serve percentage was actually 65%. Could’ve sworn it was way lower

Leylah's serving was fine. It was the forehand that she struggled with today and something that she really needs to hit for more power if she wants to consistently make deep runs. She had a bunch of opportunities to put shots away with the forehand, but she just doesn't hit big enough. A lot of times in that second set where Rogers looped it up high, and Fernandez tried to be aggressive and take it on the short hop. She doesn't do enough with it, puts herself out of position and Rogers has the easy shot for the winner. Fernandez also didn't do a good job with returning Rogers' kick-serves to the forehand.

Leylah's future opponents are going to watch this match and will try to incorporate these things when they play her. Fernandez will have to make some improvements.

Meddy with a huge choke, won the first set and was up 4-1 serving to make it 5-1 in the second and he somehow completely lost control of the match. Lot of upsets in this tournament as Zverev/Tsitispas are the only two top 5 draws left in the men’s side (Hurkacz and Sinner the only other top 10s) and Kerber (10) is the highest seed left on the women’s side

With Medvedev losing in the round of 16, Nole is all but assured of being ranked #1 at year's end for the seventh time. That breaks his current tie with Pete Sampras and gives him yet another meaningful record.

Dimitrov is playing great tennis right now and his hard work was rewarded with a terrific three set win over Hurkacz in the Indian Wells quarterfinals. He's sort of becoming a sentimental favourite, but he has seldom played better than he has right now.

Fritz's surprisisng upset of Zverev prevented a Basilashvili/Zverev semi which would have been a public relations nightmare. The match would have drawn attention for all the wrong reasons as both players are under serious investigation for brutally assaulting their respective partners.

Basilashvili versus Norrie in the Indian Wells final, a result of the top twenty seeds being eliminated before the semifinals.

A guy with monster ground strokes and, oddly, not much else or an all arounder with top notch defensive skills? I like Norrie, but it depends a lot on which Basilashvili shows up, the first round loser (14 times this year!) or the guy who has already won two tournaments (Doha and Munich) this year.

Badosa outlasts Azarenka in a three hour, three set marathon, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. Both women had ample opportunities to take control of the match: indeed Azarenka served for the match and went up 30-love before faultering. Combined break point opportunities were only 9 for 30. There wasn't much strategy involved as both women were usually content to hit down the middle waiting for something to happen.

If Basilashvili forehand had been as good as his backhand, he would have won in straight sets. Though down a set and a break, Norrie eventually applied enough steady pressure to draw frequent errors (32) from Nikoloz's forehand and the rest of his game crumbled in quick order during the third set.
