Man I wanted Price back, but no way with that contract!
That's nuts. That deal will look really bad in about the last 3 years.
Boston will be good next year though, going to be tough to repeat as AL East champs..
I don't think it's insane (relatively speaking, here). I mean, that's what everyone was saying it would take to re-sign him when the season ended. Maybe it's a couple extra million, but I clearly remember it being said that it will take 200-220 million over 7-8 years. Red Sox won the money war.
I would have rather signed him than J.A. ****ing Happ. Total fail by new management not to go out and get an ace, clearly our single biggest need. I don't buy this "build the team for the long term" bs that Shapiro is pushing. This team is stacked and ready to win now, you sign that ace (Grinke, Zimmerman, I don't care who) and you plow through the league this year before the league's best offence disbands.
I've been a pissed off blue bird fan these last few weeks for the lack of that much needed signing. I don't blame AA for leaving, the managerial philosophy has totally changed and is no longer simply to win. I get that you can't purge the cupboards too much, but it was already done, AA is a pitching draft master, and all we needed was some money to sign the big fish pitcher. I also find it disgusting that we are keeping the same payroll with the millions upon millions of extra dollars pumped into the Rogers coffers due to the huge surge last year. But at least it's not going down.
Yeah the Jays were never going to sign him at that term. I think they would have given him more per year over a shorter term, but they knew Price would never go for that. I prepared myself the day the season ended that he was ending up on the Yankees or Red Sox. So it's not really a shock to me.
I'm not thrilled by the Happ signing either, but he should be alright. I won't lose sleep over that one.
I do hope they go out and get a second tier ace but it seems that may be a long shot too, they at least need to find an inning eater to replace Buerle.
It will be interesting to see what they do, they will alienate a lot of people if they regress next season. I'm hopeful they know what they are doing!
Shapiro's philosophy is generally to win the division with offence, and get into the playoffs where "anything can happen". That is not the right way to win championships. We need another pitcher, at least a #2, as you said, if we aren't getting an ace.
What's the matter with committing 7 years? Other high-end winning teams are doing it. It's a calculated risk to take, like anything else. That's how you land the big fish. But because it's the Jays, oh no we can't sign anyone for more than 5 years? Beaston is gone, that should be out the window. Alex would have had the balls to do it. But I guess it still comes down to Ed Rogers.
Prospect wise, we can't afford to, and will not, give up more guys at the deadline to bring in another pitcher, especially when AA already got reamed out by Shaprio for giving away too many prospects to get Price. Shapiro was AGAINST acquiring Price. That's all I need to hear to formulate my opinion of his managing style. And he isn't even the GM.
Shaprio is ensuring we are a good team for the long term. I get it. But we have a wide open window to WIN now, and we aren't taking advantage of it with getting the final big piece of the puzzle.
So I'm watching the Superbowl, and I can't believe how stupid some players are. Denver gets Carolina deep in their own zone to 4th down, and Talib takes a 15 yard taunting penalty for getting in the face of the opposing player, giving the Panthers a 1st down. I get that everyone is jacked up, but holy moly, calm down.
How awesome was caring about the Grey Cup and the baseball playoffs? I find it so hard to care about the Superbowl.
But then I love running QBs.
Hard to know who to cheer for.
Was hoping for a 10-3 Denver half lol...
Now need to hope for another set of my squares to make sense
What are these squares you speak of?
It's gambling isn't it.
Coldplay was wretched as expected, but at least Uptown Funk made it interesting.
But still thinking this is one of the weakest halftime shows in recent memory
