They didn't draft a 1st round D between Barker and Jokiharyu.

They had like 3-4 2nd rounders only in that era too. 2 of those became, for a short stints, became top 4 Dmen. Just not with the Blackhawks Stephen Johns & Justin Holl.

D was such a prospect afterthought in that era

Your forgetting Dylan Olsen (2009 1st)

The 2nd/3rd round D of Bowman era (Tallon final draft in there as well which is 2009)

Dylan Olsen (2009 1st)
Failed to show much with Hawks, was reunited with Tallon in Versteeg deal but didn't show much with Panthers over parts of 3 seasons. Ended up spending two years in backwater leagues of Europe (UK and Slovakia) before returning to NA with small stints of games in ECHL over a 3-year period before being out of hockey

Justin Holl (2010 2nd)
Obviously Hawks gave up on him as prospect and he spent years in AHL before getting shot at NHL level with Leafs, but he certainly has come thru and established himself as an NHL talent

Stephen Johns (2010 2nd)
Established himself as NHL top 4 dman with Stars but concussions ended his career at age 28

Adam Clendening (2011 2nd)
Simply wasn't good, Bounced from organization to organization at NHL level playing in NHL briefly for 7 different teams over a 5 year span (Hawks, Canucks, Penguins, Oilers, Rangers, Coyotes and Blue Jackets). Then became AHL regular for years before heading overseas playing in Finland last year and now KHL

Michael Paliotta (2011 3rd)
Good NCAA career never translated at pro level. Just 2 NHL games (1 with each of Hawks and Jackets) and then some years in AHL as a not regular (Not sure if injures were issue here) and was out of hockey at end of 2020

Klas Dahlbeck (2011 3rd)
Only got brief cup of coffee with Hawks (4 games) then was 2nd piece of Vermette trade. In Arizona he got in part of one year and full season before being claimed by Hurricans on waivers before 2016-17 season and spent parts of 2 years with Hurricanes (Playing 42 and 33 games). Went back to Europe and has spent last 7 years in KHL and Swiss-A being part of two KHL championship teams during his 4 year stint in KHL

Dillon Fournier (2012 2nd)
Shoulder injury limited him to small # of games in Rockford and Indy over 3 years with hawks organization. Retired from hockey in 2017 because of shoulder but came back to play in SPHL in 2022 and still is playing there

Carl Dahlstrom (2013 2nd)
Got some looks from Hawks, Jets and then Leafs but never did much with it and went back to Europe after 2023 season in AHL

Dennis Gilbert (2015 3rd)
Has been AHL/NHL tweener since signing his first contract with Hawks and after stints with Hawks, Avs and Flames he has been with Sabres this year all season as NHL #7. 3 games away from 100 for his career

Chad Krys (2016 2nd)
Did nothing at AHL level with Hawks or Leafs to justify a look at NHL level and after one year in Austrian league is out of hockey. A guy who's NCAA game failed to translate at pro-level

Henri Jokiharju (2017 1st)
Hawks made mistake of trading away kid who has been top 4 defender since trade. Will be NHL regular for years to come and is closing in on nearly 400 NHL games now

Ian Mitchell (2017 2nd)
Guy is dreadful and soft as butter at NHL level. Good in AHL after Hawks moved on from him B's have had him firmly planted in Providence outside of a stretch of games last year. No NHL future for him at this point

Adam Boqvist (2018 1st)
Injured/disappointing in Chicago traded as part of Jones trade only to be injured/disappointing in Columbus. Now in Florida as essentially a #7 dman. Future uncertain at this point after this season. Turns 25 in offseason but hasn't shown much to justify teams continuing to invest time/roster spot on him

Nicolas Beaudin (2018 1st)
Outside of brief stretch of games showed nothing with Hawks and ultimately was traded to Montreal where he showed nothing to justify an NHL look and is now playing in Czech league

Alex Vlasic (2019 2nd)
Established as young NHL top 4 for Hawks

Wyatt Kaiser (2020 3rd)
A whole lot of Meh at this point his future with Hawks could be up in air with other young defenders in mix

Nolan Allan (2021 1st)
Hawks been solid as rookie at this point and appears to have been a hit by Hawks scouts.

Taige Harding (2021 3rd)
Hawks will need to decide if they want to sign him to NHL deal and invest time in his development professionally at this point or if they walk away (He could also decide to take chance as NCAA FA and try to find better fit/less competition path to NHL)

9 out of the top 139 I would say solid but maybe not specular considering how many 1st and 2nd's we have had.

Bonus round

Young defenders acquired by Bowman via trade

Nick Leddy (2009 1st for Wild, Traded to Hawks in Barker deal)
This was a HR deal for Bowman and Leddy has been NHL regular to the tune of 1,000+ NHL games (+130 Playoff games) with Hawks, Islanders, Wings and Blues

David Rundblad (2009 1st for Coyotes, Traded to Hawks for 2nd round pick)
Absolutely terrible hockey player, Horrendous and went back to Europe where he has played last decade and still is playing. Hey Rundblad on positive for himself got his name on cup and ring for his 2014-15 season with Hawks

Tim Erixon (2009 1st for Flames, Traded to Hawks for Jermey Morin)
Sucked in his brief appearance with Hawks (8 games) than was waived ans saw some games with Leafs (15) and spent a few years as AHL regular then went back to Sweden where he is still playing

Gustav Forsling (2014 5th for Canucks, Traded to Hawks for Adam Clendening)
Oh this hurts, Became a gem prospect after trade and showed flashes of player he would be under Q. Then Q was fired and JC despised him for some reason and that was that. Traded as part of DeHaan deal spent a year with Hurricanes organization in Charlotte. Picked off waivers by Panthers at request of Q and became star in Florida

Slater Koekkoek (2012 1st for Lightning, Trade to Hawks in Rutta deal)
Once highly rated pick by TB never showed much bouncing back and forth between NHL/AHL for Lightning. Played possibly his best professional hockey with Hawks over parts of two seasons. Left as FA to Edmonton but after briefly playing over parts of two seasons left hockey to deal with his mental health

Alex Regula (2018 3rd for Wings, Traded to Hawks for Brendan Perlini)
Saw some games with Hawks (22) over 3 years but couldn't establish himself. Traded to Boston he spent last year in Providence. Bowman once again re-acquired him a month ago he has yet to play for either Oilers or minor affiliate as he still recovers from offseason surgery

Ryan Stanton
Spent 3 years in Hawks organization playing 1 NHL game. Claimed off waivers by Nucks then spent 2 years as NHL regular for them before being signed to 1 yr deal with Caps. Played 1 NHL game and never played in NHL again. Spent years back in AHL before leaving for Europe in 2022 offseason and appears out of hockey now after 2 years in Europe

Viktor Svedberg

Spent 5 years with Hawks organization getting 27 game look (+3 playoff games) in 2015-16 season. Went back to Europe in offseason of 2018 and now plays in Austrian league

Trevor Van Riemsdyk
Came to Hawks from New Hampshire and ended his rookie season playing 4 SCF finals games. Became NHL regular the next year and hasn't looked back. Hawks lost him in Vegas expansion draft (Vegas then traded him to Carolina for 2nd round pick)

Has been a reliable NHL defender since moment he came to NHL and now has played 644 games (+35 playoff games) and has been with Caps for last 5 years

-- List didn't include Kempy or Rutta because they were already like 27 and had spent years in European professional leagues so weren't prospects)

I get opinions on Nazar are justifiably varied but not having him in the top 139 and certainly above guys like Reichel and Moore lead to questions on the varacity of such a list. Despite a slow start on production at the NHL level this season, Nazar is pretty noticeable whereas the almost 2 years older Reichel simply is not.

I like stutlze a lot but I’m never taking him over Bedard that’s just dumb.

Guy is 23 tomorrow and a PPG guy. If that’s what Bedard is at 23 I’ll eat my shoe.

he was higher on AL then DEMI. wheeler was the opposite
On Levshunov, Pronman classified his hockey sense as "High-End" and for as much as I watched AL at MSU, I never came away with that impression. Offensively, perhaps but it's a stretch and more likely above average. Defensively, NHL average.

Pronman has always had a dislike for Moore. To each his own. But I found this to be puzzling and borderline stupid...
"He’s an exceptional skater. He’ll be a top 30 skater in the NHL from his first shift. Moore’s edge work is elite and he generates a ton of power from each stride".
"Skating: Above NHL average" It should be elite.

Yes, there's that Nazar take which is dumbfounding.

Here's a bit of nitpicking on my part. Pronman categorized Ryan Greene and Slaggert as "Has a Chance to Play". Ok, but that's the same category he gave to Flyers prospect Devin Kaplan, a teammate of Greene at BU. There is no prospect world in which Kaplan should equate to Greene and Slaggert. Kaplan tries to play a heavy game but in many cases he makes stupid plays or takes equally stupid penalties. This year at BU- Greene: 19 gp, 8 g, 12 a, 20 points, +1, Kaplan; 17 gp, 4 g, 4 a, 8 points, -7.

Levshunov Hockey Sense as Above Average but Skating as Average just makes it seem like you have no idea who the prospect even is.

Nazar with the third best PPG in the AHL and not making the HM is pretty wild. Even if you personally think the guy sucks and believe deeply in your heart that he's a bust that's someone you gotta stick in there somewhere just so your list has credibility. Like he has a high draft pedigree too. That's just wild.

If it’s a third pair of Crevier and Allan, then we’re sitting pretty on defense in the future. Crevier moves fluidly and is very fast, not even considering that he’s a giant. He’s only scratching the surface, and he’s currently in the don’t trade category, particularly considering he’s a right dman.

There’s no doubt that the last five years of dmen drafting has been excellent.
