Sitting at a desk.
EDIT: maybe this will be a nice anti-jinx thread like the Holl one.

Muzzin - Brodie
Dermott - Holl
Rielly - Bogo/Lehtonen
Sandin

I think it's time for this Mo-Brodie pairing to spend some time apart. We're 6 games in, and they are getting caved every single shift. Brodie looks excellent away from Mo, so my thought is to drop Rielly down, and try to keep him away from tough matchups.

Muzz-Brodie would be a legit shutdown minute crunching pair with puck movement ability and good positioning.

Also, in my opinion we should be looking to trade Mo this TDL. Give the minutes to Sandin/Lehtonen, and have Liljegren as the first guy to be called up. Cap space can be used on bringing in another D and another forward to push Spezza, Vesey, Brooks and Simmonds all down the depth chart.

I think he could get a huge return, and I am not comfortable spending cap space on him once his deal is up.

I've been saying this since last season. Rielly is nowhere near a top pairing defenseman. He's a offensive defenseman who lacks hockey sense and iq. His defensive game is abysmal. It's pretty sad when he's pretty much been our worst defenseman this season. Maybe our issue isn't finding Rielly a partner, I'm starting to think that maybe Rielly is the issue. I would definitely look at trading him this season.

Even offensively he's not great. He's not a shooting threat whatsoever and often skates himself into trouble when he pinches. He's good on the transition, but once we're set up in the offensive zone he's the most likely player to lose possession IMO.

He's a good guy and seems important in the room, but that's not enough to justify a retirement deal that could handcuff us really quick.

Ok

I don't mind the idea of shaking up the pairings, neither Holl nor Muzzin skate or handle the puck well. Both Brodie and Rielly do.

With that said, even with his struggles, you can't for a second think Dermott is a better player

Buddy just give him more time. We are playing well. We have brand new defensemen just learning the system.
How much more time does he need? He's had 8 years.
This isn't a one off. He doesn't have a great shot, he's not a great defender and he makes questionable decisions on the power play sometimes. He's worth 5 million bucks or whatever he's getting but he's not a great #1 or worth more then what he's getting.

I've been hard on him too. He didn't look better this game apart from a few shifts.

I still think it's early, especially with defensemen and chemistry. I'd give it more time.

I saw some nice things from Rielly and Brodie at times, ofcourse it doesn't help when Muzz is off too.

I think it would be hard to separate Holl from Muzzin right now with how well Holl has looked early this season.

I said that too, a year and a half ago. He's looked pretty bad since.

Again, are you willing to pay him 7-8 million (or more) on his retirement deal?
Hell no. He’s driving his value down right now. I wouldn’t mind moving him. It’s looking like the right option for our cap.

I though he was healthy and last year ge was hurting. I really can’t see any difference from last to this year. Do you see any difference?

If his play doesn't warrant a 7-8 million deal, why pay it? Perhaps Mo is a solid 5 million dollar player? During his career he's proved to be a +.5 points/game player while playing with substandard partners against increasingly top quality opposition for more than 20 minutes a night, and on occasion more than 25 minutes a night. There's value in a defenseman like that.

What planet are you even on? Muzzin has been our worst D-man this season by far relative to expectations.

I suppose he's been better than Bogosian, but Bogosian has a defined role.

And this is Dermott's what, third season where he's had a chance to step up but hasn't?

Brodie has been mostly great and a good partner for Reilly.

Rielly will be 27 in six weeks, his next deal won't be a retirement deal. He still skates like he did when he broke in and takes his training seriously, he will play til he's almost 40.

Or we could trade him to a team and watch him win a Cup.

I don't think he will take 5.

Even at 5, I am not sure he is 4.3 million better than Sandin.

I've watched him for 8 years now. He's had a couple good season, even one where he started to look like his defence was coming around. However, since Keefe took over, he's stagnated.

We want to be a better defensive team, I don't see why we let him off the hook.

When Mo is going, he is skating all the time and his passes (including stretch) are all crisp. He has a good active stick and does a decent job of keeping players to outside.

He usually is great at getting shots through to the net with accurate shot but that has also changed over the years.

The moment he stops skating and starts puck watching, he goes to shit. His vision is sub par (other than stretch pass) which he doesn't do much anymore.

I'm torn on whether to re-sign him or let him go. Especially with the kind of LD depth Leafs have coming up.

We could use Brodie + Dermott instead, and then bring up Sandin.

If Rielly thinks he can just get away with play like this he has another thing coming.

Just stop, 6 games in and these threads already pop up. What happened to everyone last year when rielly went down, we all were crying our eyes out hoping for him to come back quickly. This fanbase doesn’t realize what they have until they lose it. Give him some times he has had chances and has shown some really good flashes, he’s one of the few players on the top of my list

also, on a side note, who is going to quarterback our PP, it isn’t Muzzin or Bogosian or Dermott, Brodie would end up playing too much, and lehtonen isn’t an answer as he has only played like 1 period total in the nhl if that, stop the overreaction and wait a bit...sheeeesh

I think he gets let off the hook because people like him as a person. On ice, it's just a complete fire drill every time the opponent has the puck in our end. Suddenly, his offensive game isn't clicking either.

His cap could be split between 2 good depth players, and I do not think it would hurt us. Gives a pathway for some of the younger guys. At some point, Sandin and Dermott need to be given 20 mins a night for 20 games to see what they are.
