So who all is everybody's favorite Final Fantasy character? I'm still a Locke guy, through and through.

I'm partial to Sabin which is funny because I tend to love "duty-bound" characters and he's the anti-thesis of that, he ran away from his.

But let's be honest, the cast of FFVI is unbeatable.

The correct answer is NOT f***ING TIDUS

EDIT: OK, Squall is also objectively the wrong answer.

I liked Tidus, and he's at least better than Auron who's less a character and more a Vaan-type except designed to be 'cool' for the North American audience. Seriously though I found Auron really boring :p:

Otherwise though never really been that big a FF fan since VI (always good games but there were many other JRPG's I liked better), so would probably have to go back to Terra.

If were talking main characters only, its close between Cloud and Ramza.

If were talking supporting characters only, its between Yuna, Rikku, Zell and Cid Highwind.

Overall? Its between Cloud and Yuna and I don't know I can pick.

I'm partial to Celes, Kefka, Aeris, Auron, and Balthier, but if I had to choose just one I like the best...

Can I just say that in a game with spectacularly designed characters, it's her and Vivi that stand out the most?

In terms of battle she's about a million times better than her counterpart (Holy + Madeen + Full-Life + Esuna + Haste + Regen >>> Ark + Bahamut + Leviathan etc., and she learns them with less AP).

In terms of in game laughs she's easily second behind Zidane. Remember she kicked off the whole Steiner-Beatrix romance, if inadvertently.

And finally, don't you just have to admire the writing here? The poor girl grew up alone with moogles, so she had to mature quickly (aside from Freya she's the most mature and self realized character in the game), and received some shock when she re-entered polite society.

My favorite RPG characters of all time is like a six way toss up between Eiko, Magus, Ronfar (LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue Complete...he's dope), Angelo (DQVIIIJOTCK), Kefka and probably someone I'm forgetting.

Feel free to add Garrus, Tali, Erend Vanguardsman, Geralt and Ghirahim if you consider these games RPGs, which I don't.

Cecil was a bit too robotic for my taste. I would agree with GreatKeith at the very least the Kain is the best character in IV, and if we included all characters and not just playable protagonists, I'd have to give the edge to Kefka as well.

I can't say that any one character clearly stands above the rest for me. The good games have mostly strong casts, and the bad games have mostly poor ones.

I have to say, though, there are things that I find very interesting about Cloud that are overlooked-- it's easy to pidgeon-hole him as a stereotypical emo-bad*** that gets associated with this series, but there are more layers to it. You can start out finding him cool as a kid and then realize that he's a complete dork as an adult, and both interpretations work well with the story. I like the dynamic of someone who tries really hard to be cool to mask his insecurities/weaknesses (fooling the younger audience in the process) and kind of fakes it until they make it.

I didn't even realize this was an opinion that a person could have.... lol.

That is a great point, I really never even thought about this... As a kid I liked Cloud so much that I actually told some of my family members that when I turned 18 I was going to legally change my first name to Cloud. As I turned into an adult I actually thought he was pretty dorky, and at one point I remember actually thinking he was a shitty person for lying about the whole Zack thing.

Though, as I matured it was a bit easier to come to terms with the fact that he lied and took on Zack's personality, once I began to understand the concept of under-achieving. From a personality stand-point it would be incredibly embarrassing and demeaning for a person to go away with such big hopes and fanfare only to be a disappointment.

Not that I'd put him on any favourite list but it's more of a he was decent for the role of the protagonist. Majority of people hate him because they view him as a whiny teenager with daddy issues... but personally as I was already in my 20's when I played it, I thought how he acted wasn't out of line with how I would expect teenagers to act and his 'daddy issues' were justified. In general I really loved the story in the game, for me Yuna was the star but of course Tidus was the co-lead and I considered (or at least from what I remember, its been a long time) him tto be a properly developed character that grows through the game.

I know it's not a popular opinion but the opposite is why I had a problem with Auron, he was just kind of gruff and manly badass uncle by design, but otherwise had no depth and was basically the same character from the start of the game to the end. I'm an avid reader so these things stick out to me.

Overall rating my fav FFX characters, in terms of the story rather than gameplay, I'd rank them as: Yuna (great), gap, Wakka, Riku, Tidus (fine), gap, Auron, Lulu (poor), gap, Kimari (poor + gameplay-wise I just never used him after getting Auron).

Looking back at Tidus though from a different genre I have a similar opinion to another hated character, Sansa Stark. I just cam't bring myself to hate her because of dumb decisions made as a kid when those I consider those decisions to make sense from the perspective of a sheltered nobles daughter.

Great points all around. I actually liked Kimahri as a kid (I was always partial to the "beast" type characters when I was younger). Also, for what it's worth, Kimahri is a LOT more helpful when using an expert sphere grid. I took him the route of White Mage and made Yuna a Black Mage along with LuLu. It was pretty sweet. However, in the regular sphere grid, yes, he is rather useless lol.

Yeah I'm not really fair to Kimahri, just because he became a fifth wheel that I completely stopped using in the game aside from that one fight your forced to use him. Because of that I wasn't attached to and don't really remember his story/character-side.

It's been a long time but going off what I recall my problem was he was fine on his own sphere grid because he played 'pierce' (?) role hitting hard enemies, but about the time you get to the end of it you got Auron who did the same role. Considering every character was matched to a specific enemy type, this was the only 'role' where you had two options. Then at the end of Kimarhi's very short sphere grid path it put you at the start of one of the light hitters: Yuna, Lulu, and I think Rikku? I remember putting him down Yuna's path to get white magic, but a second healer or mage isn't actually needed and there's a long way to go to catch up, and in the meantime his attack strength takes a huge hit making him second rate to Auron as well.

Obviously in FFX if you make the effort you can make any character in the game godly, just in my one full play through it felt you'd have to take that extra effort to push Kimahri through otherwise at around the midpoint(?) of the game while the intent was to make him versatile but for me he just suddenly becomes second-rate and redundant.

Beat FF XV the other day. Overall I enjoyed it, but they didn't do a very good job of telling the story. After watching the end I had no idea what just happened. I needed to read a forum post where someone explained the ending. I don't think I was the only one who was confused.

I did enjoy the combat system though, despite it not being turned based. And the Hunts were a lot of fun.

My thoughts as well. The game was enjoyable but the story seemed so half assed.

Yeah, the Expert Sphere grid "Fixes" Kimahri's problem, so to speak. You can choose to take him through any role that you want and he doesn't suffer from having to play catch-up. I never even bothered to use him as a melee character in my current playthrough, he was pretty useful as a white mage, I'll have to load up my save to see exactly what I did with each character, but I think I doubled up Yuna as a black mage before jumping back to the white magic.

It’s been about a year and a half since I’ve beaten FFXV. After giving it some time to marinate and internalize it against other FF games, it comes out as handily the worst game in the series to me.

Agreed on the combat. I thought everything else about the game was an embarrassment. I’ll even look back more fondly on FFXIII, due to its music and some really quality sections in Gran Pulse.
