Would you root for the Expos if they returned as a split squad with the Rays?

Elaborate on what ? If you are so certain our taxe money is wasted, you should know that nurses and teachers are underpaid and are negociating right now with the government their CBA. I would much prefer my money being spent on them than on billionnaires's entertainment.

basic teachers and nurses both make about 65k at 10 years. This is in line with averages of most developed countries. Why exactly do you feel they are underpaid and how much do you think should they make?

Why can't it be both? If the government can be so stupid as to invest $75 million in Cirque de Soleil that was already badly struggling and only to see it go bust a a few months later, then they can invest in baseball. Or how about the hundreds of millions handed to perennial social welfare recipient Bombardier,,,only to see it basically sell off. Or the hundreds of millions given in contracts to corrupt and fraudulent construction companies, only to see our roads and infrastructures in a constant state of disaster, thereby wasting even more of our tax dollars.

Makes some sense............but if there is money spent on a business that creates more business, jobs and ultimately more taxes for the government, that makes some sense too.
It's a slippery slope for sure.....helping millionaires and billionaires seems weird, and at the same time, it creates more wealth by doing so....a tricky debate that should create alot of conversation.
Don't think there is a right or wrong here.

Phil, i think the Expos could play at the Bell Centre .....just needs a retractable roof...

LOL. Although that's a plan if they want to replace the Bell Center. Make the hockey arena underground with the baseball stadium at street level, hell, make a closed CFL stadium at street level, and STACK an open-air baseball stadium on top of that. Call it the Poutine Sports Stack.

You know...

We could move the tower of the Big O next to the PSS. Then it'd be pretty to look at.

Because the are stressed, often overworked especially right now and should be getting more. The work a nurse does can be insane. Having not enough nurses is part of the problem when it comes to long term care facilities.

Nurses I agree, teachers I disagree.

The problem with teachers is they're told they're paid hourly for a 32h week job. They're not, or should not. They shod be paid on a yearly basis with the expectation of their job be done no matter what hours are required.

A top echelon teacher makes 80k$/year in quebec, which is way above median salary, and they get 2 months off in summer + 2 weeks at Christmas + March break. Of course they have to work more hours during the school year!

I will fully admit though that it's a very hard job, and they need more help - more specialized educators and speech specialists and psychologists and what not. But their salaries are not the issue.

Who got this story out in the media? Bronfman himself? The provincial government?

They obviously did it as a sounding board. Well, right now, optics don't look good. Public opinion is massively against it.

I guess they have their answer.

Get la Caisse involved. That's about it.

Essentially, the stadium is the candy for the vast housing and development project proposed for that area.

Yeah I bought a condo in PSC about 15-20 min walk from where the stadium would be. I'm hoping to buy another one in the phase 1 of that areas expansion once they finish with the REM. If the baseball stadium is confirmed during phase 2 of the project, it will be easy money.

Here's the phase 1 plan of the project for those interesting. No much more info yet out tho.

The Bronfman group is looking to reap the profits from the adjoining development, as was done in other cities. This is why they are apparently happy to let the Florida shareholder hold the bulk of the shares.

Their proposal involves bringing back the Investor Immigration Program, which would be a currently non-existent influx of funds (Quebec is the only jurisdiction in Canada that has continued the program, the Federal govt having ceased it in 2014).

Also, nobody ever did answer why Hygrade hot dogs still have the Expos logo on the packaging. Long-term sponsorship? You'd think it would have ran out by now.

Do Christmas fruitcakes ever expire? Do hotdogs? Just like the product, the Expos logo enjoys the same lifespan. It's an accessory that follows its principal. :sarcasm:

I think the story came out because they had to register as lobbyists, which is a public and bureaucratic process. No matter what sort of assistance they want, it’s required.

There are multiple studies that show they are paid less than their canadian counterparts... If we compare with male dominated jobs with equal requirements it's even worst. Fact is, these jobs are undervalued mostly because of sexist beliefs that these jobs are not professional and are instead "natural" for women. That's why so many people talk about "vocation" to again undervalue and underpay them. It takes 4 years of university to get a teaching degree and most nurses have a college degree and a bachelor... Electricians, plumbers, machinists, etc don't require a university degree yet they are paid as well or better... And please don't talk about the perks of a government job... Again, there are studies who show that even with them they are underpaid. That's what science say, not beliefs.

Bronfman hinted before wishing for a multipurpose ballpark operational 12 months a year. They will probably attempt to sell the community aspect where venue is available for other activities when not in baseball season. Unlike arenas, don't think they will have many opportunities to monetize ballpark outside of baseball season hence why very few team want to build their own.

A loan with interest hopefully
He talked about a loan inferior to the government revenues stemming from : construction of the stadium (namely) and players/organisation salaries. He mentioned that Québec's GDP is 12B lower than in Ontario. "Le Québec doit accroître sa richesse collective". And business ventures that generate net revenues for the province is the way to do it. I'm paraphrasing here.
