All-Purpose "Days of Our Meruelo" Talk

The greatest game on earth is gone from our community and I no longer have NHL hockey to enjoy live, it's that simple with me.

Not enough people feel the way you do. You may be considered a "super fan." I read a study once that claimed only about 7% of sports fans fit this description.

You basically prove my point, with one giant exception and that is that there are so very many hockey folks that could have made a difference by merely supporting their home team. That's how organizations weather tough times

You have to actually had some good times to ever claim that you're weathering tough times. The Coyotes entire existence was a struggle. It was stressful being a fan and not surprising they didn't make many new fans, IMO.

The opposite end of this coin is Toronto. Maybe they should be "smart" like Phx and not attend, if they aren't happy with the product. Instead, they are so in love with the game that ticket prices are so elevated

Coyotes fans wish the product was even a fraction as good as what Toronto has provided for their fans over the years. If the Coyotes were Toronto 2.0 the team would still be here. (Toronto fans might be the very definition of fickle.)

Sometimes I just think you need to put the bong down, away and keep it out of your life my friend.

The sober? Not sure what you're referring to, but it doesn't sound hockey related and you don't know me, so I'm going to assume you have nothing valuable to say.
Well, I don't sit at the keyboard and make excuses as I continually respond to those whom I think have nothing of value to say, I'd have to be high.

It's a reference to how you seem to think that just existing should be enough for a sports team to survive and thrive. How you pass your pain for the loss onto others because they didn't do what you feel they should've done.

Entitled.
That's puking hilarious! I've been saying the same things since the bk and prior! The team did more than simply "exist" for many of the years they were here imo but you can keep harping on that, if it makes you feel better. My point has nothing to do with my boredom and annoyance of not being able to watch live any longer, but rather facts and the fact is, had folks attended, the team would more than likely still be here. All the excuses in the world won't change that fact

This is just making excuses.

I thought it had value up until the insults. I guess now is the time to walk away. You're going to just keep on making excuses for the franchise anyways.
Walking away (at least on this subject) would be wonderful, as I do tire of your illogical defense of what you have seemingly admitted is a weak fanbase. Should you find yourself still unable to turn away, I would be very interested to see where I have made excused for the franchise. Players, coaches, I'll defend, the franchise.... not so much. I did once state that they had the problem of needing to stay competitive enough to retain fans and that by nature ruled out a full rebuild, at least to their way of thinking.

More excuses

I've resigned myself to the fact that Phoenix will never have another NHL team. But I'll also say that I check F40 more than I check the NHL these days. I haven't watched a single hockey game all season - I've just been playing career mode on NHL 23. I didn't even know that there were four Canadian teams in the postseason until two days ago, when my daughter asked who I was cheering for.

I just can't watch the NHL - and specifically the Mammoth - after seeing how they are pulling themselves inside out through their anuses to make the Utah team sound like God's own gift to hockey. And then seeing them win the draft lottery... that was just another kick in the nads for me.

But I do miss chatting with y'all - those who are still here and not moving on with the elephant in the room (rimshot).
I think they will but it could very easily be something ridiculous like 20 years from now which sucks because all that was built here will be lost by then. There's a really good hockey community here and the pipeline was starting to produce top end talent like Matthews and Knies. It will be a shame if the NHL takes so long to return all of it will have dried up by then. I'm hoping against hope they find someone with the means and the will to build an arena for the team because I do think the NHL will jump at the chance to come back. They were willing to reactivate for Alex Meruelo's incompetent ass, they would do the same for someone else so as long as something happens soon. The windows is closing for sure, if they're not ready when the next wave of expansion comes, we're toast for a decade or two.

I hear ya on not watching the NHL but the 4 nations brought me back into the fold. Lets face it, for almost their entire existence the Coyotes were done by March anyway so the timeline to switch to watching other teams felt normal there. haha I've watched a ton of playoffs and man have I been rewarded, this post season has been absolutely glorious! Again, feels normal because the Coyotes were rarely ever in the playoffs, no different this year. Being a Coyote fan was just a constant kick in the nuts! (but hurr deer it's totally duh fans fault :biglaugh:)

As for the Mammoth, it's hard to begrudge them ass kissing the community, that's just what you to when you're a new team. It's nauseating to see of course but hoping that will eventually blow over and it'll just be normal team coverage and less ass kissing. I don't know, we'll see how it goes next year. There's definitely a part of me that wants to see BA's build through since I was so invested in it for years. Going to be hard to resist watching if Simashev and But come over, really want to see if they're as good as I told everyone who would listen (not because I have insight, but because I'm a homer). Granted they make it so damn impossible to stream their games, if that doesn't change it might be the nail in the coffin. I do wish they hadn't moved to Mormonville but maybe the best way to make a dent in that cult is for more normal people to be seen and involved.

I think that the real answers for why things failed were all of the above. I was a hockey fan way before the NHL was here, and I was not able to watch a lot of games until the playoffs, and it just reminds me what a damn good game it is. I don't know what next year will bring, I hope to be able to enjoy some Mamoth games (and maybe see a couple). Time will tell I guess.
These playoffs have been phenomenal!

You're forgetting it's NHL hockey (the greatest game on earth), with ridiculously cheap ticket pricing, in a metro of over 400M.

I was warning of the dangers of a fair weather, bandwagon jumping, root for the teams from the cities they used to live in, nutless, puking excuse of a fanbase back in the AZ Central days, during the bk. Sadly, the pitiful fanbase proved me correct.

We would have been able to get the ownership we needed, had folks shown interest.

If we were actually a metro of 400 million I’d agree.. but we ain’t. :sarcasm:

Note the other pro sports teams in AZ suffer the same issues of fans not showing up when the teams suck. There was a point not long ago where the Coyotes were out drawing the Suns. Difference being they have better arena and media agreements.

(in my best Maxwell Smart voice) Would you believe just under 5M?

Your second point merely serves to prove my entire point..... HORSESHIT MARKET, chock full of (man I grow tired of typing this) fair weather, bandwagon jump'n, root for the teams from the cities they used to live in, nutless excuses for a fanbase! :)

However, I don't believe that they ever outdrew the Suns. Either way, good to see you coming around!

So…… what……

I was an original six fan before anything. Then a Kings fan….. BEFORE Gretzky.

You’re going to forever preach the fallacy that fans are only as good as their wallet and be lemmings.

Knock yourself out.

I was watching attendance numbers for games when both played at home. Not every game, but a number if them during the height of the “SarverSell” months.

Mind you this is the team that is the OG of all pro sports in Arizona.

Get on that soapbox.

You know, I just deleted a response to this because it dawned on me that you think I'm attacking you personally. At least that's my best guess, based on your need to describe the origins of your fandom. I can assure you TL, that nothing could be further from the truth. There is a myriad of reason's fans can't attend games live, rabid fans even and I respect them all. In fact, very few from F40 fall under my "fair weather, bandwagon jump'n etc." rant.
That doesn't change or excuse the valley as a whole. It also doesn't change the fact that the organizations do indeed think that fans are only as good as their wallets..... because it's a business and they are. I can only chuckle at the lemming comment, I mean after all if a person wants a guaranteed outcome that is rosy more often than not, they should just go to the movies and avoid sports altogether.... hell, they can find out ahead of time if it's a happy film and completely avoid any pain.
