All-Purpose "Days of Our Meruelo" Talk

I'm not sure if it was intentional... but I love that you used the phrase "sure as shit" in reference to Alex Meruelo.

If it wasn't intentional, and for some reason you don't remember, when he was being interviewed after buying the team, he said "I sure as shit want to win."
Oh it was absolutely intentional.

Steve Peters joined the Clean Hits Hockey Podcast and chatted a little bit about the future of NHL hockey in Arizona (around the 45-minute mark in the above clip). He's optimistic that the NHL will return to Arizona by 2030.

Things that are required to make this team work here:

1) Expansion, not relocation.. it has to be AZ's team
2) Location (Central/East)
3) Ownership

No particular order btw. But seeing the VGK close up, that is a community loved and supported team in a non-traditional market. I can't believe how horribly this market was abused in AZ compared to what i've seen from Vegas. Even BY Vegas in our own market.

The Coyotes 1.0 were an absolute disgrace top to bottom (Shane Doan not included)

Ownership is key. VGK had good ownership out of the gate. They were ready to hit the ground running and started on better footing than the Coyotes ever had. I am not convinced expansion vs relocation has a genuine impact for Phoenix metro. Hockey fans want hockey and the team will be new to neutral prospective fans. Just my two cents.

Hoping the '30 timeline is real. Annoying that Vegas is the closest NHL action now. Too damn expensive to go to Vegas.

Counterpoints:

- Vegas was the first major pro sports team to hit town. It would be similar to when the Phoenix Suns were formed. You won't have that luxury here now.
- Vegas has a corporate support base unrivaled to most cities including Phoenix.
- The NHL literally handed them a build formula that would ensure they were competitive from the first puck drop. You won't ever see that again (ex. Seattle).

That said..... both of you are making very valid points.

Any yet everyone said they would be the terrible. I loved reading the disgruntled forum commentary (especially from Laughs Nation) shift as their maiden season progressed: "This will be the worst team of all time" to "They won't keep winning" to "They won't make the playoffs" to "Expansion process was rigged so they would have a good team".

You are right about Vegas. A long starving market with money. Lots and lots of backing.

I know a lot of y’all felt Ishbia might swoop in and save things in the 11th hour, has the bloom come off his rose now that it’s starting to look like he’s Jerry Jones 2.0?

Ishbia is no different from the other owner bros out there who don't understand what culture does for a team...

I'm looking at this as..... first time owner who wanted to make a splash, and for a while it worked. But overlooked many of the important details.... (like culture as you mentioned.)

A whole lot of nothing out of that interview/show.

I'm actually much less confident we get a team back in AZ within the next 10 years. I'm kind of fine with it, fun year being a VGK fan, amazing memories taking my son to his first NHL game in Vegas but just in general, sports has taken a backseat in my life due to the business side. It's just not fun, all around.

Curious to know just how much money the guy actually got to walk away from the team. Hard to get a solid number as some say XXX amount is in a bank till the team is brought back

He didn't get a billion like some people think.

Given he assumed the estimated $300-360 million in outstanding debt buying the team, and the $30-35 million each of the 5 years he owned them. Another $7 million trying to get TED passed. Doesn't leave all that much.

Now with all that in mind... had he been able to reactivate the franchise, that billion would have to go straight back to the NHL up front.

So when you do the math it's pretty easy to see why he didn't pursue that land purchase as hard as he should have. Given he announced plans to build another arena in Reno at while all that was going on.
