All purpose Alex Galchenyuk talk

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Despite the solid start to this series the Leafs have had, putting in Nash after a long layoff and having not played a single game with the Leafs and sitting Galchenyuk was such a bad call.

Thankfully, Alex didn't mope about being benched and when given the chance he delivered. But Sheldon showed again why he's still got some real growing to do as a coach, specifically in terms of his decisions on who to sit/dress.
They had to get Nash in a few games this series. If the Leafs want to make a deep run, they're going to want him; he's one of the best shutdown centres in the NHL. Montreal just doesn't have anyone to shut down.

I believe the main reason they changed it was because of how difficult it was to determine exactly when the skate came off the ice due to the angle of the camera. You could guess, guys knee starts to bend, skate looks to be coming up so probably it's off the ice - but I don't know how they could say "definitively" a lot of the time.

I think they change it because it's obviously the right thing to do.

I can't believe the rule was ever not this.

I think you're overestimating the leagues willingness to do things because "its the right thing to do"

Happy to eat crow on Gally. I was not a fan of his prior to coming to Toronto, and never thought he would become a player again. I think he has shown the NHL that he still belongs. I'm curious if he'd be willing to resign in Toronto in the offseason for cheap given the fact that we gave him a fair shake at reclaiming his career. I'm not sure he will get a big ticket after a half year playing with JT and Willy, but if he can produce over an 82 game season on a 1 year deal, he might fair better in the 2022-23 offseason. Especially as teams start gaining capital again. Either way, good for him. He's been awesome to watch. My biggest critic of his prior to Toronto was his compete level was inconsistent. Which oddly enough has been the strongest aspect of his game. Moral of the story, never write a player off
That makes 2 of us .. clearly when he has space he is unreal skill .. I will wait to see if he keeps it up but right now he stays in lineup for his offense .. da Habs killer .. carve them up baby carve them up

What? You watch Simmonds play and think he has two more years left in him? I think he has zero. Guy can't do a thing at even strength.

He's our new Clarkson except,

- he sucks cause he's old, not just because he was never good to begin with, and
- he only earns what he's worth instead of six times as much

I think Simmonds is going to take a pay cut down to about 1.0 million per year and stay in Toronto. I think the guys like him in the room and he brings some of the greasy stuff that teams quietly like having in the lineup. I don't think he hurts yout all in a 4th line role, as long as he's making a million dollars per year, or less.

I will add that he was producing a reasonable level of offense prior to the freak, broken wrist this year. I think Dubas will give him another year, at least... JMO.

A 2-year deal under $2 million would be perfect. He's 27 currently so he would probably love the opportunity to stick with the Leafs a bit longer and not only try to win but also build some value for a better payday when he's 29.

Thanks for the like, I agree and think it should be around 1.75. He will get the opportunity to play with JT and some decent PP time. It gives him enough time to show that he has the chops to stay in the big show and play top 6 which is the only place he is effective right now. Don’t think he is suited for bottom 6 role. Like I said I hope he doesn’t chase the money and sticks with us as we need a top 6 player on a cheap contract.

He's played well, but I'm not sure I'd re-sign him for anything beyond an entirely buriable 1.125 AAV. We can reasonably expect to find another 'Galchenyuk' either in UFA or on waivers every season. We've created a situation where we can successfully plug & play flawed players into compartmentalized roles. Shouldn't make the mistake of paying him for his situation rather than his ability, like we did with Johnsson. Just keep the core together and a steady stream of cheap reinforcements will always be available.

i love leaf fans ..

he starts off amazing for a half dozen games .......... he our saviour !!
does absolutly nothing for the next 30 games and becomes a defensive black hole ........... he sucks !!
does absolutly nothing for first 2 playoff games ........ hes only on the team because of injuries. !!
has a career playoff game ............ sign him to a 5 year contract !!

ffs ........... if he wants more than 1.25 mil let him walk ...
hes too inconsistent and too much of a defensive liability to be worth more than than.

Those two passes from Galenchy, were, like, Gretzky, Adam Oates like.

Marner, is the only guy, maybe along with Spezza, who can snag something like that.

Has Gally, suddenly rediscovered what he once had.

Heck, if I know, at all,

But Spezza, Gally, Campbell, Muzzin, Brodie, Bogosian, Kerfoot, Simmonds, etc.. have been ridic adds.

Brodie for just over what he got.... What was the NHL thinking.

It was just a few replaceable powerplay goals. He's done absolutely nothing at even strength. He's been at productive as Patrick Marleau this year, or 2013-14 David Clarkson.

For 1.5 million, and likely 1.0 million next year. He's some toughness added to the lineup, some character and leadership for a younger group and I think he brings some confidence to the dressing room. A million dollars is a small price to pay for a guy that brings those things to the table and deeply wants to be back playing in his hometown.

I'm fine with him on the 4th line for another year or two.

He plays 10 minutes a game. Imo he’s an ideal 3rd or 4th liner and will be back for 1.0-1.5

Yeah and when I say he's producing like Marleau this season or like Clarkson in 13-14 I mean on a per-60 basis. His production is not even replacement level.

It doesn't matter if he's tough. There are plenty of players in the league who can play tough and dozens of them are available every offseason. He was worth a gamble but he's not an NHL-caliber producer anymore. We can and should do better.

If you take every forward in the league with 200+ ES minutes this season it's about 500 forwards (basically every team's top-14) - he's 392nd in the NHL: approximately a 13th forward by production.

Foligno is 2nd lowest among all Leaf forwards currently in use, he's nearly 50% ahead of Simmonds, and he spent most of the season on an inept Jackets squad. Next is Mikheyev, and from watching him this season we can see he's been fairly creative, gets the puck towards the net and gets chances but has been pretty snakebitten this season.

Simmonds is completely alone among Leaf forwards this season when it comes to bad production. Lines that he is on just don't get anything done. His 9 hits per 60 would make him the 2nd-3rd most physical forward on most teams, but it's just not unique and is very replaceable.

He might be replaceable on paper but I really like Simmonds for his attitude and character.

Unreliable player and has been his entire career. When you rely on garbage players to play key minutes expect garbage results. He is not an NHL player.
