Or are overrated. Draft isn't an absolute ranking of who is the best.

Yes.. but it's a general ranking and the guys in the he first round more likely than not the better players of the draft class. It's not a list made by amateurs.

If you took the first round class of every draft ever they would beat out the others the majority of the time.

Neat fact: Canada will have more first rounders in the pressbox eating nachos then the Czechs will have on the ice this tourney.lol

I haven't followed US closely... are they missing any big players due to covid/injuries other than Hughes who was held by his club? Or are they full power?

Robertson missing it for Leafs camp is the biggest one. A few other players (Beecher was one) got cut for Covid-related reasons, but mostly depth guys.

Uhm, what? That's just factually incorrect. They have never dominated this age group - they've been placing better the past decade, but 4 trips to the finals in the past 10 years is a far cry from dominating.

He doesn't mean dominating the U20 tournament. He is referencing this 2001 birth year as being pretty strong through the tournaments they've played. He's not wrong that they've been a solid group.... but he can't say they've earned the "best on paper" tag as we have clearly changed papers since those other tourneys, which were a while ago. Canada has assembled a better roster than they had up through the U18's and the USA has lost a number of guys, including some to Covid, unfortunately. You have to factor those in and once you do so it definitely appears that the US has taken a bit of a step back.

It’s also, not just one draft class. The 2020 draft class gives Canada a big boost. They have the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 10th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 25th, and 27th overall draft choices on their team.

At least for players participating in the WJ’s I think the American advantage in that 2019 draft over Canada is largely exaggerated too.

This must be historic, even the dream teams of '95 and '05 didn't have that many first rounders. It's pretty cool, hopefully it'll translate to dominance in the tournament.
this team does not touch either of those teams

What I like about our WJC team is every year, regardless of how many first round picks, if we don’t win Gold we are losers. This team wins Gold, or they are a disappointment, just like every team Canada.
Now Russia, Sweden and the USA feel the exact same way. Silver or less is for the losers.

I'm Canadian, so obviously I can't speak for these nations, but I'm not so sure. I think the US definitely have that same attitude (gold or bust). And it seems like the Russians do too. But from my perception it seems like the Swedes have a different attitude about things. It seems like they're still able to value/celebrate silver medals.. even if there's disappointment with falling short of gold.

Nope. They know that are as good as anybody. Gold or bust.

It makes sense considering the NHL season is delayed this year. Some of these guys would be playing in the NHL and thus Canada would have no choice but to replace them with some later rounders. Also guys like Graeme Clarke, who played really well in the tryouts, didn't have the opportunity to play in the CHL this year and back that up as not being a fluke. So Canada went mostly with pedigree.

Its an easy prediction.

15 teams since the 05 WJ team . None were better. This one aint either.
You also have exactly no way of knowing it. Im sure plenty of people said no team would ever come close to 95 either.

People who talk in absolutes usually have absolutely no idea what they're talking about

We dominated more than just one tournament, but if it helps you rationalize your view, show no respect to what has previously happened in this age group. You are absolutely allowed to be arrogant and dismissive about what has happened previously in this age group without assessing its value. Thats your right, but this kind of thing usually makes you look foolish eventually. Should Slovakia now start calling themselves the favorites because they like their country the most and they don't want to assess any of the factors behind what yields success?

Imagine thinking who random people on HF boards think is the favourite going into a junior tournament is going to give other teams "less pressure".

You could've quoted me.

Thats not, at all, what I was getting at, but you are one of the main culprits, and we've been through this before.

Players, coaches, team staff, families absolutely read media. Maybe some of them even read a website like this. Many Canadians have prognosticated that they are the favorites. Mr. Loud Mouth has prognosticated that Canada will go undefeated in this tournament. Many have ignored all arguments otherwise to these prognostications. Many have decided that they will show no respect to any other countries.
