I dont know if it was posted in here or another thread, but i was talking to a coworker and he said that there was an article somewhere on Zucc's coach was bashing Torts style of coaching. He said Zucc would not work out because of Torts "Stoneage Hockey Style".

Yeah it's posted in the Zucc thread.

Pierre McGuire saw the Rangers during dinner last night, and said the team's got the look in their eyes of a playoff team. Look hungry, prepared, and ready... Maybe something has or is about to change? Doesn't sound like coaching issue where guys quit trying... personnel movement? Staal close to being back?

They looked hungry at dinner? That's weird.

I was hoping someone would give us the 'look in their eye' update, can't trust those rumors about their eyes circulating out there.

Craig, how can a team (NYR) with 2 30+ goals per season guys and a 50 assists per season guy be last in the NHL in goals scored? Is it the players or is it the coach? Torts admits he doesn't coach the O. Is a change behind the bench what the Rangers need and not a Hobbit?
Craig Custance (1:24 PM)

Craig Custance: Pat - Scouts I've chatted with have said they think Tortorella's system isn't ideal for the talent they have in New York. There definitely is some debate as to whether or not that's the problem. The reality is that the Rangers, when everyone is healthy, look pretty darn good. I don't think they have to do anything drastic and if they can just sneak into the playoffs, I'd still list them with Boston and Pittsburgh as legit contenders. That's a team built more for the playoffs than regular season.

Fox on Sportsnet.ca said the same thing, as did the Team 1200 guy that hosts Pierre's podcast the other day, as well as Glen Healy on HNIC. Its funny Custance was making waves with his Richards and Torts bashing like the manic depressive Ranger fanbase just less than 48 hours ago, only to back off today. Zipay hinted at something vague the other day, and I really think a move is being made, whether its personnel or system, I don't know, but the Rangers look very comfortable defending a lead, problem is that they haven't gotten one 2/3s of the season so far.

There we have it.

It's so frustrating when you watch other teams in the NHL play in the offensive zone.

Like the Kings and Blackhawks game last night, their transition through the neutral zone is so much better. They go through with speed, none of this bs long pass tip in. When they dump it in, they do it with speed through the neutral zone so they will actually win the puck battle.

When we dump the puck in, more often than not, we do not have enough speed and are simply giving the puck away. That's why we have a hard time generating offense, we are dumping and giving the puck away and try to regain it in their zone. This works on the bad teams in the NHL, but the good ones can move it out of their zone quick enough and not allow our forecheck to have a chance at getting the puck back.

We tire ourselves out trying to get the puck back and so even when we do get it back, we're too tired to generate any quality chances.

Same exact problems on the PP of getting through the neutral zone. It's pathetic.

Its also tough to have a good transition game when we're pinned so deeply in our own zone for most of the game.

Our breakouts are awful.

This is my prognosis. As long as Tortorella continues with this anemic offensive approach, no trade will improve this team and we (if we even make the playoffs) will not go very far whatsoever.

Thats just how it is. If he adjusts then I can see improvement. If he doesnt, we all better start looking forward to next year and just enjoy watching the Penguins and Blackhawks insane offenses in the Finals.

Tortorella then said, “we need someone to take over the PP and run it. I still don’t think that has really happened or am sure it ever will.â€

sounds like a coach who has a handle on things doesn't it? It really seems like he has the ability to affect change with the team right?

Richards was supposed to be the PP savior.

Torts lobbied for that one.

This idiot is now going around in circles. He got his PP QB in Richards, now he wants a 36 year old Boyle with a 6.6 mil cap hit. Sorry Torts, deal with it.

"The reality is that the Rangers, when everyone is healthy, look pretty darn good. I don't think they have to do anything drastic and if they can just sneak into the playoffs"

But what injuries are the Rangers suffering from?

Staal is out, which is a huge blow. But is that really why this team is playing so poorly? Sorry, I am not buying it. The reality is, this team has big enough key players healthy and playing right now but still manages to not be playing to its potential. Enough excuses.

Seriously. OK, so instead of going with a power play that goes through 1 player, (like Giroux with Philly, MSL with Tampa), why doesn't Johnny Cakes go with a power play that goes through everyone equally? (St. Louis, Nashville without Suter.)

Let me guess, are we "trying to get Richie going?"

Best goalie in the league?

Let's try to block as many shots as we possibly can!

Yeah, I think it's important to recognize that for us to go anywhere in the playoffs we're going to need Richy to be a part of it. So, while right now to give ourselves a better chance to win it would make sense to limit Richy, I think that would actually be counterproductive in the long run. As a coach you don't run your team like every game is game 7 of a playoff series, you can't. If you did that would mean never playing your backup goalie and barely playing your bottom line/pairing (yeah sometimes we kind of do that anyway, but in a game seven situation you do it even moreso. who can forget McD playing like 58 minutes to Bickels like 3 and change in that OT game). So, point is that what's best for the long term isn't what's best in the short term when it comes to where and how much to play Richy. We have to get him to play his way out of it, hard as that is to watch.

This is where we disagree. Richards can play his way out of it w/fewer top minutes. And without our prime acquisition, Mr. Nash.

It may be that nothing will help Richards. In that case, playing him as #1 w/ our #1 talent is a mistake.

Or it may be that with time and games Richards will get it together. In this case, again, playing him as our #1 w/our #1 talent on his wing is a mistake.

Your argument is that the only way Richards will get it together is to play with Nash and pretend to be a #1.

I don't buy it. The price is too high and the need for this course is not clear.

Richards might be finished as a top talent for all we know. Letting him be the anchor to pull down the whole season is bad judgment by the coach, imo.

Lots of my friends that aren't real hockey fans ask me that all the time. If Hank is one of the best goalies in the league why do the Rangers block so many shots for him. It's a tuff one to answer when the team is not doing well....

I get this mentality on the PK but at ES for 60 minutes I don't see the advantage.

Last god damn year.

Anyone else get the feeling that Torts has changed (softened?) his approach? I see it as a positive.

Definitely a lot more forthcoming. Talked about what he needs, and the state of the team for 16 minutes, with some banter about Miami's streak. He mentioned a lot of the things a portion of the fanbase mentions, and also takes a few polite shots at his detractors.

Frankly mentions need to address middle of the line-up, get harder for playoff hockey, and is happy with parts of the team's game, and needs to see others raise their level.

Perhaps he took a page out of Ken Hitchcock's book?

The NHL and its players have evolved a tremendous amount since 2004. Completely different ruleset, changes in attitude amongst fans & sponsors (hits, safety, fighting, etc), a change in attitude with the newest generation of player, etc.

If you want to stay in this league long-term, you need to roll with the changes. Players today would not work with a modern day Keenan or even a modern day Scotty Bowman like they did decades ago. You have to have more of a nurturing and teaching style relationship over always screaming and yelling and being a dictator. Not saying you have to coddle the players like babies, but you need to treat them more like equals.

One thing Hitchcock said last year after winning the Jack Adams, is that modern players are always asking 'why?'. Players want a dialogue. They want to know the reasoning behind decisions and input. A coach needs to be up on trends like social media, challenges facing today's youth, etc.

You could see the change beginning at training camp, where Torts looked to his vets for input regarding the physical and mental state of the team, and adjusted his practices accordingly. He's always going to have a hard edge to him, but it's good to see some adjustment. That, more than a nearly-decade old Cup win, will keep him employed in the league.

Thanks for that link! That was a great interview. I'm not sure I've ever heard Torts talk about little details of the team so openly.

Definitely listen to that if you have 16 minutes - very interesting.
