Interesting debate, I will say this though the last several years, what we've seen in terms of effort had a lot to with the personnel. The short time Tortorella coached Gomez & Zherdev, he was visibly disgusted by them. No joke some of you have avatars from those days.

The full seasons he has had, each year the team got better in terms of effort to the point where it isn't even questioned. Wolski was the last of those players on the roster, and he was a healthy scratch, and Avery was on his last legs. Last years team had all but two guys that played the system and were a right fit.

If folks listened to the Tortorella interviews on Michael Kay, the organization fessed up to saying they took a step back in terms of what they had built by not filling back what they lost (Feds, Mitchell, specifically mentioned Prust). What they lost were their penalty killers. The Rangers had a middling PK w. the best goalie in the world.

So Tortorella or no Tortorella, the Rangers lost their identity when they lost willing shot blockers up and down the line up, not just in PK situations, look at how many pucks get through.

How many shots got to the net this year that would never had made it last? Is it the system? Players? Management?

I'd say it's a little bit of everything.

Agreed.

No one else seems to bring it up, but I've noticed that there is little to no shot blocking done by the Rangers — the point shot gets through nearly every time a shot is taken.

Maybe it's because other teams "figure the system out", or the loss of Feds/Prust had a bigger impact on us than we thought. Anisimov and Dubinsky as well, they were key shot blockers and PKers.

Essentially, Torts is a slightly better version of Tom Renney. Renney tried to win every game 2-1. Torts wants to win every game 3-2 by playing defense like they are on the PK all game. Sather's worse skill as a GM is hiring coaches. He's been completely incompetent. So I don't have much hope that he will hire somebody in here who can coach offense.

Yeah, but even if the Rangers go out and get those "lunch pale" guys who can block shots all day. I still don't think that system sustainable. IMO, its a high risk, moderate reward system that grinds down our players over the course of 82 games.

Plus, if you look at all the prospects that are funneling onto the team in the next couple of years: do you even want to go that route?

You're an awfully sad person if that's your attitude.

ok pal, I want the Rangers to win a cup. Not meander against mediocre teams in the playoffs. I want a coach who can provide that.

I do not feel Torts can do that. So, the sooner he is gone, the better.

If you like how the Rangers are playing, great. I think its like watching wisdom teeth getting pulled.

You're openly rooting for them to not to win a cup right now, headed into game 7 in the playoffs.

Save that juvenile whining for the offseason.

you guys are silly to think torts is a bad coach.. guy is all time winningest us coach and has won a cup.. now we of all fans degrade winning cups now? give it a rest.. and to say he doesn't coach this team well bc of style bc we have more skill on the roster? please!! we have basically the same skilled players in each position as last yr.. prob an upgraded hags, step and brass is better then AA.. clowe is similar to dubi.. so how is this different? i dont understand how hes a defensive coach.. he demands a huge transition game and hard on the forecheck? hes an old school approach to hockey that may be his down fall but its not lack of coaching...guy has gotten the best out of players..so please stop this ****.. worst part is his PP game plan. which is a joke and i blaime the players just as much..

This has more to do with you being a terrible fan than anyone being bipolar. At least the bipolar ones are happy after a win.

Yep, I'm a terrible fan who doesn't blindly love a poorly coached team that is going the distance against a mediocre Washington team. But, nah we should keep the clown coach so this team struggles endlessly in the playoffs.

Personally, I just think I have higher standards.

we've struggled the past 4 games? i think we've played our ***** off.. its the playoffs every team plays and brings it that much more... one of the best players in the world has 1 goal this entire series and hasnt even been an impact player..

boston has struggled, MTL lost in 6 games.. hell the islanders almost took pittsburgh.. i think we're playing great.. and if you or anyone say otherwise its crazy!!

I think you jut have zero perspective.

I don't mind high standards, but wanting the team to lose in order to get a new coach is short-sighted IMO. Who says this new coach would be better? People complained about Renney and now people are complaining about Torts. Torts being fired doesn't automatically mean that a new perfect coach who is everything you want him to be is going to take his place. The person who hires the new guy would be the same guy who hired Torts, and, let's not forget, hired Torts when he was doing far, far worse than he is now.
