I think it's also important to keep in mind that most good trades are ones that most don't see as such right away

Think of the deal for seidenberg or recchi for example

Sweeney could very well make a move that has us scratching our heads but the player fits the team really well down the road

What's with Tobias Enstrom? Quality dman with skill, good skater. Could Winnipeg make him available in the offseason? Possibly with money retained? 32yrs old, doesn't get a ton of points but could be that under the radar Seidenberg type acquisition. With researching I'd guess he's a 5m dollar guy. If he's got a year or two left on his deal and Winnipeg retains some, might be worth a look, to help stabilize that left side. The Lauzons & Zborils won't be ready this coming season, and Chara is aging.

7 million for 6 years is a lot to add more another aging player that's not elite. Especially when you'll need to give up assets just to acquire them in the first place. I pass

If I was a gm I'd only sign long term deals with guys I know are going to be giving it their all and a huge piece moving forward. People complain about Rask making 7 mill and he is far more important to the bruins winning than Shattenkirk will be. Pass

On another note, listening to the three amigos yesterday while I worked in my classroom for this lovely feb break - totally get where they're coming from i.e.: Carlo for Landeskog but respectfully I disagree.

First, I've never personally heard anyone compare him to shea Weber - I'm probably one of the biggest Carlo promoters on this board and I may be seen as bias (but there is a reason I'm biased, it comes from when I saw him at dev camp two years ago and noticed how much he stood out) but even I don't think Carlo will ever be a shea Weber.

That said, I think he'll be a staple in the top 4 for years. While his talent ceiling may be lower than Landeskog's, Landeskog can't do what Carlo can do if you lose Carlo you're losing a huge piece to the defense's future. You can't honestly say a kid like Carlo will just fall back into the b's lap again. Where as we have a number of wingers coming up that have leadership qualities and skill to burn. How many huge smooth skating right shot defenseman do we have that we know can play in the NHL already at 19 and handle top pairing minutes and matchups and will likely only get better?

The answer is none. We have none.

You don't get rid of a player like that. Carlo has playoff warrior/too minutes/leader/ big plays when you need them/shut down best players written all over him. A guy like Carlo will allow a guy like MaCavoy to fly around the ice.

Landeskog gives you...some more goals every year? Some more leadership? (And personally I think Carlo gives you a similar level of leadership given his attitud and has shown more snarl than Lando in my opinion, Landeskog broke out asaleader on a team that had very little to begin with, so I think his abilities to be a leader are a tad inflated due to that fact and wouldn't be as important in Boston)

We need more skill and ability up n down the line up, not more 60 point forwards with leadership abilities

I know the NHL fancy stats are kinda crap to look at.

But look at the defense stats. Krug is comparable to Doughty and Colin miller has some really nice, if not sheltered numbers as well.

Look at the stats for RW's pasta is top 10 almost across the board.

Look at all forwards and you can't not see bergy and marchy along with pasta dominating the top of the charts.

Surprisingly Czarnik ranks well in terms of possession and getting shots off. He deserves a shot in the bottom 6 again soon, Schaller-Czarnik-Moore would be a great 4th line.

Colin has now sustained a good rate of play. 45 games so far this season and not looking like he is the one fighting for a spot, really flourishing.

Could we solve our defensive woes by a line change?

Chara-Chiller
Krug-Carlo
Liles-Kevan-Quaid-ogara-morrow etc fight it out for another combo of puck mover with shutdown.

Morrow-Killer would be my choice but morrow-liles or liles-killer could give cassidy more experience down the strech/playoffs.

Keep with the uptempo style and have a real offensive d on each pair with a guy to cover.

Chara has dragged much worse defenseman than Colin into looking like top pair/top 4 guys.

I like that much better than throwing away picks, prospects and players away for someone who is either a rental or doesn't fit into long term lineup and budget plans.

I've said it before if carlo goes and we get a bridge between youth and chara someone like Johnson in COL than I can deal with that. 7x7 for shattenkirk makes me nervous in another long term deal for a player who is getting his last big contract. Johnson signed a comparable contract but his ends at age 33 while shattenkirk at 7 years takes him to 35.

Shattenkirk is a better offensive guy but Johnson is more of a shutdown 2-way guy who can cover for then mcavoys, chillers, lauzons and krug(even though he is underrated defensively) As well EJ saves you at least a million a year if KS is looking for 7 mil+

Our lineup has some holes that need to be filled, but not for rentals or at the expense of our prospect pool for no longterm improvement.

EJ would be a great fit here IMO, but I haven't even heard anything to suggest he's available.

His age makes him a good fit with our core group to come in, play with Chara for a couple years and then be the leader of the D along with Krug while the young guys assimilate.

Only thing I saw was a tweet saying a gm believed boston would get two players before the deadline, or at least try to.

EJ is also almost back from a broken leg.

Chara-Colin
Krug-EJ

looks solid, slot EJ with chara for a shutdown pair, put chiller with krug for an offensive rush. Go back to krug-mcq/killer because thats worked fairly well.

what I think you're seeing by Sweeney's statement is, you also have to realize, that there is an expansion draft for Vegas, so this isn't a traditional trade deadline in retrospect...

if you trade now, those who might be eligible to be selected, then you run the risk of a player or players you may not want to be exposed that are protected.

That's massive too when we are talking about adding a defenseman that isn't a rookie or very close to it. We would have room to add a forward and still protect who is worth protecting, but as it stands, we have Chara, Krug, and one of McQ/Miller/Miller to protect and that's all we get. I would assume (prefer?) they protect Colin Miller, but if we add a D and then most assuredly that one gets protected and we stand to lose Colin. That has to be factored into the true cost of any deal that gets made.

I'll come to you
To me its still too much money to commit to one position like that. Especially with other needs as well as a replacement cost for Belesky. Another 1 to 2 million or so.

The budget numbers just dont work for me.

Id rather try to move Belesky for a pick if I could to get out of his contract or expose him to draft.

Wally, do you have any idea if the 6 teams Beleskey can't be traded to (per his modified NTC) include any of the sellers? (Arizona, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit ...)

Considering most players have most of the Canadian teams on their ntc it's a safe bet that most of those six reside in Canada

Where are you seeing this list?

Wouldn't it be a safer bet to say "seeing that Canadians make up the largest group of players. it's a safe bet that most of them would want to play closer to home and therefore Canadian teams are not on their list?"

Wouldn't taxes be a major issue for playing in Canada?

If this is the case, given Sweeney's recent comments about the trade deadline, I think the Bruins are better off staying pat.

http://spectorshockey.net/2015/02/the-real-reason-nhl-players-avoid-canadian-teams/

from the sportsnet article:
Sorry, Edmonton Oilers. Our condolences, Winnipeg Jets. We feel your pain, Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The agents have spoken, if only to confirm what fans of the aforementioned five clubs already suspected: most NHL players don’t want to be traded to those five teams.

According to an interesting report from ESPN’s Craig Custance, four of the top five teams on NHL players’ no-trade list are located in Canada.

Custance asked 10 agents for the three most commonly named teams on their clients’ no-trade lists. Cold weather, losing records and media scrutiny, he was told, are all factors encouraging players to avoid four Canadian markets. (Taxes might play a role, too.)

“I think Winnipeg is on all my guys’ lists,” one agent says in the piece.

The Oilers finished No. 1 on the players' no-trade list, followed by Winnipeg (No. 2) and Buffalo (No. 3). Toronto and Ottawa tied for fourth.

I guess that is the first thing Dougie Hamilton thought of. Took less money in Calgary and paying more in tax.Actually, Alberta is very tax friendly

Wouldn't the hellish winters be a factor too? Not that I believe the assertion that most clubs on players NMCs are Canadian teams . . .

Boston has worse winters then Toronto

Didn't realize that! Worse in terms of temperature? Snow amounts? Of course New England winters are a major reason why I've never considered moving back- north of Tennessee and they all seem bad to me

Not to dispute your declaration that Zboril and Lauzon, etc. won't be ready, but many said the same thing about Carlo. Maybe you've seen more of them than I. I've seen quite a bit of McAvoy. But I'd prefer to wait until post season tournaments and DC before I judge further.

Chara may be ageing but I hope and believe he has one year left at a high level to mentor a rookie, as he did Carlo.

10 out of 193 agents that have at least one client in the NHL just doesn't cut it for me to be a large enough sample size.

Then again, that article by Sportsnet is two years old. I'm sure one or two players would change their minds now for a chance to play with McDavid :D

The most recent is the National Post article from 2016 and the oilers still top the list

The Edmonton Oilers won an NHL poll.

Unfortunately.

For the second year in a row, a player agent poll by ESPN.com’s Craig Custance revealed that the Oilers are the team to which the most NHLers don’t want to be traded.

Custance asked 10 agents to submit the most common teams on their clients’ ‘no-trade’ list, and Edmonton won for the second year in a row, finishing ‘ahead’ of the Winnipeg Jets and the New York Islanders.
