AZ is the team I'm currently obsessed with. Hanzal, Stone and Vrbata are all interesting rental pieces if the offense picks up between now and March and Chara is healthy.

I'd absolutely be all in for getting one or both of Hanzal and Stone come trade deadline if Boston is in a good spot and it doesn't cost too much.

Not so sold on Vrbata. Haven't watched him at all this year.

He is definitely high risk, but because of that I think the price will be low to acquire him. The Sabres were looking for D-man for him, if they would take K Miller and retain 50% salary on him, I would also throw in a couple B prospects like say Ryan Fitzgerald and Linus Arnesson see if that gets it done, if not move on, but if they say yes I take the chance, if he does not work out expose him or send him to the minors and with Buffalo paying 50% then it is not that bad of a cap hit plus we get rid of K Miller's salary.

If you can get the 50% retention AND send them back one of McQuaid, Hayes or Kevan, cap wise even if it doesn't work out isn't that bad.

Maybe this in a minor thing, I wonder how it would go over in the room if one of the above (who I would think are all fairly popular teammates) are moved out to bring in noted perceived (with heavy emphasis on perceived) selfish player Kane?

I would take a chance in acquiring Tyler Ennis from Buffalo his trade value is at a all time low. So it would take next to nothing to acquire him to replace Jimmy Hayes in Lineup. Adds Speed and has the ability to score 20 goals if healthy. Low Risk move to better our team.

Kane's off ice antics in Winnipeg seemed like media overreaction to some not unusual 20something actions (like with Seguin in Boston), but what has transpired in Buffalo should make him a no-go for any team. In all likelihood, the guy should probably be facing down criminal charges that the police or someone got brushed under the rug. Not dissimilar to another Kane.

My opinion exactly, I was rooting for him when he went to Buffalo now I want nothing to do with him.

I'd just keep on keeping. Vatrano and Acciari will be back soon and Heinen is going to be a stud in time but by January/February top 9 at worst

Boston and Buffalo despise each other more than Montreal where there is respect between organizations

I'm interested too see Millers & Morrow here - I've seen improvement in all 3 let's see where this goes

Chia got crap for evaluating but that's what needs to be done- it's been haphazard the last few years

Agreed, and on top of that our top players haven't been healthy yet aside from Pasta and Marchand. Backes, Bergeron, Krug, and Krejci were/are dealing with nagging injuries and returning from surgeries without time in the offseason to train. Krejci and Krug are finally starting to look better, the team is controlling play more than it did last year. I am really pleased with how the team is doing even if it isn't yet showing up on the scoreboard.

They are balancing/juggling stage

Healthy and core playing to history they are good to very good

Reading this Board there are posters that want all in or all out. The reality is neither makes sense based on their composition. I also believe those posters on both sides even added together are in the minority.

Likeliest scenario is a 2015-16 San Jose regular season. Get in and maybe you can ride a Rask.

Those 20+ prospects from the 2014-16 draft, trades, and college UFA signings are already starting to show up in the NHL and are gaining experience and physical maturity with each season/year

You rush you end up dealing a first & Marchand for a Chris Drury or Evander Kane which is what I read here over 5,000 posts (conservative)

Call me critical and jaded, but based on past history with forwards brought in from other organizations at or about the deadline for offensive help ... I'm tired of seeing those that have had good production on other teams being asked (what looks like ) to dump the puck in and then peel off for a line change rather than create offense. Too often I've seen new players production here dry up after a few games. Unfortunately, it usually takes a full training camp and part of a season before they acclimate themselves to the committee concept.
Yeah, I know, I know ... I'm just tired of watching this team try to win games by playing not to lose and bypassing players with offensive gifts because maybe possibly there might be a defensive lapse. I have always believed that a good offensive pressure and strong forecheck is the best defense. Teams can't sore against you too often if they are hemmed in their own zone most of the game.

Couldn't agree more and when you see depth guys like Moore Schaller Acciari Kuraly signed or traded for it looks like they agree with a strong forecheck leads to wearing down D and puck possession

When Chara got hurt they were 2 in that criteria going into Blues game

Chara & Carlo got it out quick and the Moores & co would keep it down the other end

Guys like Heinen, Cehlarik & DeBrusk look like high end puck possession players watching Providence

Sorry, I should have added in my last post ... I don't want to see the team trading away prospects (unless they are not going to keep them anyways) or picks for a pure rental average depth guy. Now if that guy is a stud long term core guy that's a different story. Otherwise keep the prospects and let Sweeney continue to transition this team from slow of foot, to fast skating high pressure forecheck and skill guys.

I've always like reading your stuff and find myself agreeing 95% of the time. It was cliche 40 years ago and it still is "a strong offense makes for a strong defense" but it's true. It's true that when a team is hemmed in at the other end of the ice it's tough to score. Being the team that usually used to get hemmed in we have first hand proof of this.
It would be refreshing to see this philosophy put back into affect, and it probably will come back to vogue as all things come back around eventually.

Hmm...I see your point and its defendable, but at the same time I feel like some pieces here are probably known commodities, or known expendables if you will. I don't see any real need to rock the boat because my expectations for this team are low, and like you, I'd like to see some of these kids play. But I also feel like some of the middling players can go. Kevan, McQuaid, Beleskey, Hayes, even Krejci or Krug are all guys I'd happily move. Some I'd give away, but the others I'd be open to moving on from. It's fine to "evaluate" the kids to see if they can contribute, but there's something to be said for not allowing every veteran to be fat and happy like PC did. Gotta move around some of those guys, IN-SEASON, to light a fire once in a while.

Last years deadline debacle put us one year behind on the rebuild, we don't need to go 2 years behind. Thank goodness gems like Carlo showed up. Sell off the fat, let the kids play.

Bruins are fine with having a load of 100 ft players, as long as it is the defensive side.

Look what happens when you bring guys in like Jagr and Stempniak towards the end of the season. They are so worried about getting back their offense suffers.

Could not agree more, but they seem to just make a call up here or there, or move the same stiffs up and down the lineup. Make a waiver claim, put someone on waivers, demote someone, make a small deal, anything.

He's a brilliant hockey mind. Familiar with the system. A player like himself has coach written all over the wall.

A guy who is brilliant and available and a pp specialist is Adam oates. Now with Neely and Sweeney in charge it makes too much sense to bring in their old buddy.

Oates does a weekly talkshow segment here and likes working 1 on 1 and with kid clinics but he has said he wants to get back to nhl coaching

I would take both Seguin and Hamilton now on this roster.Especially since they have nothing to show for the Seguin trade.

If Seguin is here at 5.75 I'm guessing backes isn't here at 6

In a cap era you spend cap once and fill a hole. You could argue you'd rather have Seguin and most will agree but to say we have nothing isn't true

It's like... does chara sign here if this is still Joe Thornton team? Do we have cap room for both? How important was it to chara to be the man?

Putting teams together is more complicated then some want to make it out. Rangers used to buy the most expensive players every year and they sucked. Hockey has always required a mix of leadership and 2 way players binding together as a cohesive unit for success. Even the gretzky oilers didn't win without 2 lines of hard nosed grinders

No way I would bring Oates in he tried to muscle his way into a head coaching position in I believe Minnesota, no thanks. Not to mention I've yet to see him have success at the NHL level coaching.

Would anyone in the world be upset with Seguin over Backes?

Reports are he did a very good job in NJ when he assistant coach there.

I think he's a lot like our own Butch Cassidy, in that he's probably an excellent assistant coach and that role suits his skill-set best, but isn't really suited to being a head coach.

Take for example OV. He insisted OV would be better off on the RW, and doesn't think guys should play the off-wing in general. So even though OV greatly preferred playing LW, he made the move, because well, it was his head coach moving him.

As an assistant, he can make that suggestion, but the final decision on where OV plays isn't his.

Here is something to consider ... the Bruins really are not a bad team.
As someone else mentioned elsewhere on this board many of the other teams the Bruins are competing with in their conference for a playoff spot have greatly improved via draft, FA, or trade.
The Bruins forwards have moved sideways in improvement - different players plugging in, but no significant improvement to make them more difficult to play against.
Bruins defensemen - as much as some may not want to acknowledge it, has actually improved from last year; Not due to trade or FA, but almost entirely by player development. That is the most significant improvement to this Bruins team.
Also, Rask is playing the way we hope Rask would play.
The Bruins have not made a trade that significantly impacts the immediate product on the ice in a while. Most all recent trades have been lateral in hopes of remaining relevant and competitive or with an eye towards future improvement of the team.

I never, ever wish injuries on anyone in this world but Cooke may be the only exception, the guy brings nothing and just hurts people.

I guess I am just an eye for an eye type of person.

I'm the same way, Cooke and the few like him (say Raffi Torres) are an exception-- basically a psychopath on ice. Has done nothing but ruin careers.

If boston and Edmonton can mend fences and deal... would anyone be ok krecji for Ryan Nugent Hopkins straight up?

They get a playoff ready second line center to play with lucic... we save 1.5 mill while getting younger and possibly Hopkins benefits from change scenery

I know krecji has the nmc but this is a deal I could see if personal anomosity n chiarelli and boston can be settled
